These ole' steam engines are really neat. They don't make much horsepower. The most powerful steam engines maxed out in the 100-150 hps range, on the low end hps could be in the low to mid teens, but they have an insane amount of torque. 900+ foot pounds for even the smallest tractors, the biggest ones would make multiple thousands of foot pounds. Much more than the diesel engines normally used in tractor pulling. When I first heard about tractor pulling I had wondered someone didn't try using a steam engine. I know why they aren't common, nobody makes steam engines anymore, and for that matter nobody even makes parts for steam engines. But still, I had wondered why somebody hasn't at least tried. Well, turns out they had, and turns out it works pretty damn well. If you'll notice even when the sled was all the way down the tractor was still pulling, slowly but surely. Other than taking over two minutes to go 500 feet (maybe), if given the time and clearance, that tractor would've pulled that sled for miles.

I would like to see better safety, if that chain breaks it stands a good chance of injuring or killing somebody on the tractor, & loose the extra passengers.

while very impressive, that engine looks incredibly out of maintenance. steam is feckin dangerous if it fails. i hope the engine got restored soon after because it looks as if they know how to use it but perhaps haven't maintained it as well as should be, rust and steam engines should never exist together.

Man these are the Machines That Built America man these things you got to realize worked so many different jobs and could haul push-pull you can throw a belt around the flywheel and operate Sawmills and all sorts of other Machinery technically if you had to know how you can hook him up to an electric Dynamo and make them a steam generator for power these were incredibly utilitarian vehicles and really kick-started America's development. The kind of power it had in the capability of hauling was unmatched by anything of the age it was literally like having the power of an entire steam engine on land it took two men at least to operate it one to steer one to manage the throttle steam pessure and fire box
