Michael Collins, while flawed, is a far better film than Schindler's List. And Liam Neeson obviously had the passion and connection to the Collins role to make it soar. Not with the thin, one-dimensional Schindler role, which got completely eclipsed by Ralph Fiennes' Amon Göth.

Ireland had been overrun by hordes of English, led by the most vile of all their race, Churchill the Defiler. The giant Gundabad Englishman had sworn to wipe out the Irish nation. The Irish were leaderless; defeat and death were upon them. That was when they saw Michael Collins; a young Irish leader facing down the dark English. Churchill the Defiler learned that day that the Irish nation would not be so easily broken. The Irish forces rallied and drove the English back.

I was at the premiere of this in Dublin many years ago. I got in with the media as they were standing outside my local interviewing the stars. Some of the actors went into my local for a drink either before or during the movie. Liam Neeson was very protective of his wife Natasha Richardson who was heavily pregnant at the time. May be wrong but at the same night they also held the premiere in Cork where the other stars appeared.

One look at the huge number of flowers left by locals at the sight of the murder, speaks for itself. That was a clear sign of RESPECT for the fallen and condolences to their families.
You "aren't aware of any Irish men or women who paid their respects". But I am. And that's good enough for me.

He didnt want english in ireland, he felt that it was our right to have our own country, ruled by our own government, with no interference by the english or anyone, an opinion shared by myself. he had the support of the amercans also in this venture. he died after achieving his goal & im proud to be an irishman. I think present day ireland would be a much different place politically, socially & economically if we were still ruled by the british....michael collins r.i.p.......

exactly. Collins got the best deal possible, even though britain was at war in europe, as much as i hate to admit it paulgallagher13, they could have crushed every city in ireland, collins brought them to us, to a guruella war, which only we could win. the reason that we have a republic today is because of collins. LEGEND.

Actually, my understanding is that British regulars couldn't be used for police duty in the British Empire (which at that time included all of Ireland). So, to beef up the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary), the crown recruited the dregs of the British army vets straight from the trenches of France and Flanders and paid them to serve in an auxillary of the RIC." They wore different uniform parts assembled as a uniform, which tended to be black & khaki, or tan. Hence the name...

Can someone help me with a genuine question?Did Micheal ever actually take the Oath and join the I.R.A.?As I understand it he was with the I.R.B./I.C.A. at 'The Rising' in the G.P.O. In 1916.He was subsequently put in Charge of Military Operations by the Dail, then became Commander in Chief of the Free State Army, but I've not been able to find any record of his formally joining the I.R.A.!
