But if you play real blues or jazz or have a signature sound, cheap guitars won't cut it - AS IS. However, take a cheapo, put some quality tuning heads, nice pickups, good strings, quality knobs and a quality bridge (if needed), set the truss-rod, file your nut, set your action, file the frets to eliminate buzz after setting the action, file the fret edges (so they don't catch your hand), and you will not be able to tell the difference from a really nice guitar. That's what most pros did for their first real guitar. they built it from a cheap body. Ask any pro who they learned to set up their guitar from - or who sets up their guitars, and they will ALL give you a name. That's the key difference between beginner and pro guitars.
This is pretty commonplace though, there are a ton of cheap fender knockoff basses out there that aren’t bad especially if you slap some good strings on.

That sax was painfully out of tune even for a $100-200 cheapo sax. I had a $200 alto, it was heavy, loud and cheap but it was in tune, even the off brand mouthpiece was better than that one.

That's why for ANY band, you CAN'T have have a drummer OR bassist (or both) that suck. If the foundation is solid, everything else being "terrible" still makes the band overall at least passable.

it's not that you cannot sound good without good instruments, it's that you cannot sound good on /bad/ instruments. it's like how good instruments do not make a bad player better, but a good player can sound better on good instruments.

The bass is at least totally valid as an instrument. Like it’s not winning any awards but if you’re a beginner or if you’re in a punk band or just need some kind of bass then it’s pretty workable. Like damn I’ll pick up a $55 bass that sounds like that why not?
