  • I HAD BEEN CONTACTED BY YES WELDER. THEY ASKED IF I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN CHECKING OUT ONE OF THEIR WELDERS. I THOUGHT ABOUT IT FOR SOME TIME. I HAD BEEN WANTING TO LEARN TIG. THE MIG-205DS DOES MIG, TIG AND STICK WELDING IT IS A DUAL VOLTAGE SOURCE MACHINE. SO I TOLD THEM TO GO AHEAD AND SEND IT. I HAVE BEEN USING THE MACHINE FOR QUITE AWHILE NOW WITH GREAT SUCCESS. THERE IS ONE VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUE THAT I FELT NEEDED ADDRESSED. I MESSAGED YES WELDER ABOUT MY CONCERN AND WITH A POSSIBLE SOLUTION. THEIR FIRST REPLY WASNT WHAT I WAS HOPING FOR. I EXPRESSED MY CONCERN AGAIN AND ASKED THEM TO RECONSIDER....THEY RESPONDED WITH A MORE SUITABLE ANSWER. FOR MY OWN SAFETY, I MADE CHANGES I FELT WERE NECCESSRY. I WILL SHOW THE CHANGES I MADE IN PART 2.
    HERE IS A LINK FOR THIS WELDER:

    20:49 I taught myself to weld with a Lincoln stick welder at 65 years old . I got a Titanium flux 125 and learned on it . Then I bought a yes welder stick only machine because I sold my Lincoln buzz box like a dummy . I would have bought the one you got but I’m 75 now and my money got short because of inflation . Your videos are great . New subscriber here!

    Extremely great tutorial , great Safety Tip . I've mig and stick welded a lot in my 72 years of age . My opinion is there's time's when I think a stick welder is better . Especially on thick metal and then mig on thinner material . Mig is very forgiving when filling in gaps . To each his own and NO I never went to welding school . I was taught be some pro's , one being an awesome welder that had me do his brazing , funny but true . Great video .

      If you get the right gas instead of the straight argon you will see a
      WORLD of different. You won't have the machine gun effect or sound any more and less problems with spatter.
      Straight co2 would be better, mixed co2/argon is best.
      Try it you will see a remarkable difference.
      Other than that I enjoyed the video.
      And it probably would be a good idea to stupid proof that adapter.
      It seems to me people are getting stupider all the time.

    Hi JC , I've been at this welding game for thirty eight years or so somethings haven't changed other things such as the welding machines have. Starting out on the pipelines one would mostly use 6010, 6011, on light wall gas lines nowadays on the heavywall the companies are using semi- automatic mig welders, just spitting out the finished joints. Good luck with upcoming projects !

    Exactly why the Miller multi-voltage inverter welders have interchangeable plugs for the cord vs an adapter. Now, I'm rusty on my math, but I believe if you plugged in that 5.5A grinder to 240V (twice rated) via that adapter, it will pull 4X amperage and definitely for sure release the magic smoke! I like your solution of making the 6-50 permanent and having an adapter to 5-15, that should make it pretty foolproof. That welder seems pretty legit other than the 6-50 adapter situation. Thanks for the honest, no-bs review of the welder. I'm looking forward to seeing how well it performs over some time for you. If all goes well, I may have to make a Yes-welder a Wes-welder and consider their plasma cutter as I hope to soon be in the market for one. Thanks for the video!

    Seems like a decent little piece of kit for the price. JC the reason the LCD display flickers on the camera is something you are very familiar with...60Hz. The camera is taking thousands of pictures per second to make a video...and the LCD works on 60Hz A/C. The camera is catching the flickering that is unattainable to the human eye otherwise. Great review of the welder tho...I have the Millermatic 185 Auto-set and love that thing. You are absolutely right about the 220V adapter. The right thing to do would have been to hard wire the welder for 220V and make a 110V adapter...that is how the cheap plasma cutter i just got was set up when i got it. I am sure they are just trying to save pennies on the awg of the cord coming out of the machine. Thanks for sharing bud!

    Just an FYI I noticed this welder had issues when running the larger spools because of the size of the shaft holding the spool. I ran a smaller Lincoln spool and the wire speed works more properly and you can run it without needing to max out or overheating the metal. It's annoying using the smaller spools but it works 100 times better. If you leave the door open you can see how choppy it moves and it feeds alot smoother with the small roll. That's why it sounds choppy and not like sizzling bacon when you are welding. Try it out and let me know what you think

    • @natas0733
      @natas0733 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Spatter can be mitigated by increasing inductance and by using a FLOW METER, not a regulator. Flow meter is for volume in CF/H, regulator deals in pressure measured in psi. His issue with the inconsistent sounding weld is due to the regulator. Or possibly the polarity

You are correct that it should always have been configured this way - what you got was an accident waiting to happen.. Perhaps your video helped persuade them to make this change.

    Thanks for sharing your views. Regarding the cable, safety first, that is why it is recommended to use the 220 V cable sold by yeswelder and leave it dedicated for the MIG 205DS and not to use a conventional 120 V extension. This is the cable: YESWELDER 20 ~ 30 Amp 40ft 220. From my personal point of view, I prefer not to cut the adapter cable. Thanks

      the responsible thing to do is avoid the issue to begin with. not everyone that uses this welder is educated on 220volt and 120volt with respect to the differences and the dangers each can present. a simple change on the fixed plug removes that threat. any respectable manufacture will see this and make the change.....safety first, always.

    JC looks like you have a regulator on that gas bottle - when you need a flowmeter. Mig and tig need a specific volume of cover gas (around 15-20 cfh) to make smooth welds......that cracking you're getting is probably gas related..........try the gas flowmeter that you use on the miller welder on the new welder and see if it isnt much better.
    remember that tig needs 100% argon - the argon/co2 you use for mig wont work.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      my miller has a regulator as well. flow meter or regulator is preference i think. otherwise the other new mig welder i just bought wouldnt have come with a regulator from the manufacture. i purchased a 100% argon tank for tig. i am looking into 100% c02 for mig as well. just keep trying to learn more.

  • @Chr.U.Cas1622
    @Chr.U.Cas1622 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dear J.C. Smith.
    The security solution can be really simple: For instance the adaptor/adapter for my welding machine is the opposite of yours. My meanwhile older Einhell 170 Amp MIG/MAG welding machine has a 400 V male plug on the cable. The adaptor has a 400 V female and a 240 V male. By using the adaptor you choose to weld with 240 V. Nothing can happen if this kind of adapter/adaptor is misused. The only thing that can happen is that a 400 V tool accidentally only gets 240 V. It will simply not run with that lower voltage.
    2) Fortunately I (we) don't have such kind of power problems because in Germany I (we) weld with 240 Volts or 400 Volts. The difference seem the cables and especially the plugs and sockets. In my opinion (and out of my experience) North American style sockets and especially the 110 V plugs (male and female) are a pretty bad joke security wise. I also experienced that a lot of people around the world are afraid of using 240 or even 400 Volt electricity. In Germany we simply grew up with this electrical voltage and are used to it.
    Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
    Best regards luck and health to all of you.

    Not sure if this has been said or if you care that much but changing the shutter speed on your camera will fix the lights flickering. This is caused by AC power at 60 Hz your cameras shutter speed is out of sync with the alternating current flickering on and off while your eyes don't notice the flickering your camera will but can be remedied by playing with the shutter speed.

    Looks like a very capable Welder, I hope they take your suggestion and do away with the 120v end and put the 240v end on it and just give the adapter like rv's have for the 120v great idea and suggestion JC, I know I would be one of the dummies that would get hurt by forgetting like you said then blowing apart some other tool and likely my hands or worse. @@j.c.smithprojects yeah it looks a heck of a lot more complicated than what I'm used to, similar to you I'm used to a dial for wire speed & a contact to select voltage that's pretty much it. For the money though that thing seemed to be fairly versatile.

    First time I've seen that plug adapter arrangement. Most DV machines are wired for 240v and the adapter is for 110v, not the other way around. It wouldn't be
    optimal to run 240v through the 110v/20a cord via that adapter.

    JC I'm so glad you did this review, I have been thinking about buying this exact same welder, at age 75 and retired and disabled, but I have a couple of antique cars I am going to make drivers, I've done a good bit of stick welding, but never tig or mig and have been, and need to learn to tig and mig for the sheet metal work.
    I thought this machine would be the ideal machine to learn on. I have seen some good reviews on it. And bad. From videos I've seen you have to get the temperature and speed adjusted to suit the person welding.
    I like the idea of it being reasonable and multipurpose is ideal for someone like me. I have a Lincoln and Miller for heavy welding.
    Boy, this is getting to long ! Thanks for the update.

    I enjoyed the thorough review of the Yeswelder. The one suggestion is regarding the 30 amp adapter. Their is nothing unsafe with the adapter, it is supplying 120 volts on a 30 amp circuit. The 30 amp adapter has one 120 volt leg a neutral and ground, same as on a 120 volt 15 or 20 amp circuit. If you plugged in the 5.5 amp rated grinder you would not injure yourself or damage the grinder. I think you might have been thinking of a 50 amp adapter, which has two 120 volt legs a neutral and ground connection. That indeed could do some damage to a tool not designed for 240 volts.
    Thanks for your review, I just ordered the Yeswelder 205 and look forward to testing it out.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you are incorrect. the 30 amp adapter supplies the welder with 220 volts. 2 hot legs and a ground. otherwise it would not be a dual voltage machine. it indeed will destroy a grinder and can be a hazard to a person's safety.

    • @jsaladin2376
      @jsaladin2376 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@j.c.smithprojects Yes, I stand corrected. Under the old electrical code in our jurisdiction a three prong dryer outlet would contain two 120 hot legs and a neutral bonded to the ground. With a 30 amp rv receptacle and current codes in our area the neutral and ground can’t be shared or bonded.
      Thanks again for your insightful review.

    • @jsaladin2376
      @jsaladin2376 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Curious if you checked with a voltmeter when the adapter is plugged into the 30 amp circuit. Does the hot side of the female plug have 240 volts on it? I would not think the neutral side would get 120 volts and the and the hot side would get 120 for the total 240 volts. Thanks again, Jim

    The adapter plug is just fine if you keep your welding equipment in the Fab shop where it belongs. Who is going to use it as you are fearful of happening? If you are concerned it might be you then you did the right thing for yourself.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it is wrong. the whole purpose of having a "PORTABLE WELDEER" is to be portable. fab shop? my whole shop is a "fab shop". i often weld outside as well. it the adapter was acceptable by safety standards miller, lincoln, eassab and the rest would do it like this...it is an avoidable safety risk. not everyone understands the potential for harm that this adapter creates. yeswelder has since changed the cord. i sure wouldnt want it around anyone that isnt familiar with a/c voltage, amperage and how they work. you cant market a welder as a versatile economical choice for any level of welder and then expect that same level to be verses in electrical safety as well.

      I think you suggestion to make the welder with a 220volt plug and an then make adapter to step down the voltage from 120 male plug and a 220 v female. That would be the sane way for them to manufacture the welder and its dual voltage adapter.
