    I've never sewed but I've watched all of your make thrift buy episodes and really want to learn now! I mostly watch for your personality and the "how did I go" part is great I love it. It's hard for me to watch your other series because it doesn't end with "how did I go"! I'm just so attached to it! You're an inspiration and very talented ❤️❤️❤️

    I don't want to make anything controversial, but I've always genuinely wondered. Is it better to not buy from places that pay people no money because it's wrong that they do that? Or would that make it worse for them because it means they lose a job that obviously they have because they need income however they can get it.
    It's a shame that stuff like that happens in the world, but it's hard to determine wether you're doing right or wrong. I stopped buying clothes from places like primark or online stores ages ago, but I wonder if that's the right choice sometimes.

    I'm apprehensive about crop tops for myself(I collect mostly belly fat), but I could definitely do this for some of my slightly-too-big shirts. And I like how the laces can be loosened and tightened for the perfect fit.

  • @eingamal
    @eingamal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    romwe is a scam btw! my family makes big fashion "open days" where they get items from different countries, they visit and my mom resorted to romwe because she was ill and couldn't go and we discovered they make extremelyyyy cheap rip off-s and their images are taken from websites, and the best part, they refuse to refund you even if it's something like the clothing being ripped or the wrong color !

    • @vicw1121
      @vicw1121 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      goes for pretty much all wholesale sites. google reverse image the items and the real store will pop up. especially sites like dresslike all the clothes are made to look similar to the stolen photo but with cheap labor and cheap materials. you get what you pay for.

    • @eingamal
      @eingamal 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** ah yea thats what i did when i started getting suspicious, and you get what you pay for /is/ true i saw some people who expected that and were pleased, i just don't like that when you e-mail them about a wrong size or something they go "try giving it to a friend" lmao

    Annika, do you look at the brands of the clothes you buy from thrift shops to make sure they ethically made as well? Just curious.

    • @AnnikaVictoria24
      @AnnikaVictoria24  8 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      No, because it doesn't matter once it's in a charity store. I mean, the tag can give some indication of quality and how long the garment would be expected to last... But that's it. The money I'm giving for the item at that point is going to the charity, not to the company that doesn't pay its workers enough or care about the source of its materials.

      @jackietwyford9593 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fast fashion stores bother me, because I'm afraid that the clothes are being made in a sweatshop by people who's lives are full of poverty and misery. I've heard many horror stories of sweatshop workers, and it makes me sad... I can't buy from those kind of stores anymore. :-/ I'd rather use my sewing skills and make my own stuff.

    You bought really cheap laces? aren't you against buying cheap things when you don't know where they are from?

    • @AnnikaVictoria24
      @AnnikaVictoria24  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Shoelaces are almost entirely made by machines, not people on a production line, and the material is acrylic. And they're actually not that dirt cheap for that very small amount of labour (a couple of people monitoring a machine), because thousands can be made by a machine very quickly.

    • @melstar1ify

      Plus it's impossible to be 100% perfect - moral absolutism isn't something I believe in or would hold anybody to. For example I still buy my socks and bras pretty cheaply from a company that are okay, but not perfect in their supply chain - because it's close by to me, and they fit really well. I do the best where I can.

    Question from someone who doesn't do a lot of sewing...
    Would it be possible to curve the cuts outward like a baseball? Would that compromise the fit of the shirt?

  • @McCookie-pc3qp
    @McCookie-pc3qp 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hello Annika i got 2 questions:
    1) if you live in Australia why do you use inches why dont you use the metric system?
    2) is it possible for you to put at the end of each video or in the description how long approx the project would take e.g. 40mins
    Thankyou kind regards ,keep up the great work!

    • @morgenroete8789
      @morgenroete8789 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of patterns that you can buy here in Australia are usually measured in inches with centimetres. I'm from Australia too and although I measure everything in centimetres, meters, kilometres etc. all my sewing stuff is 80-90% of the time is measured in inches. Weird, I know but it just seems to be easier.
      Also in Australia we go "op-shopping" (opportunity shop) not "thrift shopping"

    • @wildlyrebird
      @wildlyrebird 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry I mean 'measured in inches, with centimetres in brackets'!! Typo!

    I have to say Annika, you're the first and only person who ever taught me what fast fashion is! Aside from its iffy origins, I also noticed how very very poorly made the clothes are from uniqlo, h&m, forever21 and such. Plus they do not accept returns of damaged items, like some pants my sister bought, and note they are already damaged after we got home, she never got to wear them! So thank you :) i told this to my family and im trying to steer them away from those capitalist shops lol

    Do you think you could do a video about sizing up a non stretchy dress? I have an expensive dress that I got on sale and I really liked the style but it's a little too small around the waist and I've had it since December and I haven't even taken off the tag

    Cute!!! But since it's stretchy, wouldn't it be better to give it a bit of interfacing for the eyelets so they don't get loose with the knit jersey?

    • @AnnikaVictoria24
      @AnnikaVictoria24  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I thought about that, and the eyelets do seem to stay pretty tight in the fabric when pulling and stretching it (I made up a sample piece that was just a strip of jersey that I inserted some eyelets into and tried to simulate some intense wear and tear haha). I think it more depends on what type your jersey is. There's ones which really snap back into the exact same shape when you pull on them, and I don't think those need any interfacing. Then there's the jerseys which can kind of stretch out over time and, I mean, I avoid those usually anyway haha, but I think that those are the kinds that *would* need interfacing. Another problem is that I never seem to be able to find light-coloured stretch interfacing either (I only have black and you'd be able to see that through the fabric), so that's another reason I didn't use any here :P

    I was thinking about eyelids scratching scrin-thing... If it happens to somebody that they scratch, you could saw a small rectangle out of fabric to the inside of the shirt that covers the eyelids. I was thinking about sewing it closed on three sides, but leaving the side open where you lace the string or ribbon through...

    Hi Annika! I was wondering what the difference was between normal scissors and fabric scissors

    • @finnfinn271
      @finnfinn271 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fabric scissors are made for cutting fabric instead of paper, I believe they're sharper. I used to use normal scissors for cutting fabric and they small pieces of the fa from stuck that the end between the blades, but my fabric scissors never do that
