I started keeping aquariums almost 40 years ago. Ten gallon aquariums were quite the standard for a long time. They weren't called "nano" tanks (nano is a unit misnomer) back then. They were the common size tank many hobbyists had. I find this discussion important, and it shows how things come back around again. A larger tank is technically more ecologically stable, but ten gallon tanks have benefits. Ten gallon aquariums are approachable from several standpoints. They are approachable for beginners, home space, weight, time commitment, and very importantly, expense. After all these years, I actually prefer smaller sized aquariums. They allow me to take a deep dive into a speciality without a lot of expense, time, or space. The hobby should not a source of stress and hassle. Some times bigger isn't always better, and less is more.
Hey Corey! I sat through a good chunk of your Sunday Show, just listening. There was a comment you passed along from people who didn't like the idea of you making money from posting etc etc. I really don't much care about these things. I've been following you for some time and I can't believe the gall of some people!! Corey I have learned more from just listening to you! The info we get everything we need from listening to you. I listen to your filtration comments and knowledge on every aspect of fish keeping. People comment on My knowledge And I send them to you! Thanks to you I am able to hotrod any type of filtration! It just keeps getting better and better, I am in debt to you Corey. Even here in Canada you can reach out and get my attention! I was out of the game for a few years but I am back and watching you and catching your thoughts and advice. I hope we can meet up one day, so I can. Explain what you have done for me. Until then my friend!
When I researched before getting my first tank I keep seeing bigger is better so never considered anything below a 20 gallon. Now seven years later I love my 10 gallon 😊
I rarely catch a livestream from anyone while they're live, but this is a great thing to have on my headphones while doing water/filter changes. Thanks for keeping them up!
Hi cory! I have two 10 gallons and I downsized recently from two 20 gallons and it was a great decision! Basically still keep the same types of fish, just a few less! Great video!
Sad to hear about the aquarium lights, but I'm so glad you mentioned it. I was able to get my a 30" for my 20-gallon long (last tank that still needed a co-op light). I would have waited until after the holidays for a purchase like this and it may be too late by then. I have lights that work, but none that make my tanks look as good as co-op lights. Also the my full gold guppies are nuts for the magic nano feed.
That's why I like 20 gal Longs (and longer tanks in general). It feels like a panoramic 10 gal. More surface area for oxygenation and it being shallow means easier maintenance as far as reaching in the tank. I can run lights on a lower setting since the plants are closer to the surface. More space for more plants as well. Feeding is easier for fish that normally prefer to eat mid column (they're likely to just come to the surface since it's so close). I also think the fish make better use of the extra swimming space horizontally rather than vertically.
Hi Cory thanks for this ten gallon topic! I just set one up in my kitchen and and scaped it with products I already had. Gravel, rock, drift wood and plants borrowed from my 55 & 29 gal tanks. Also had the heater and hob! Talk about economical, the led hood cost the most. I broke the top corner thin glass of the one I had so had to replace it, $14. Oh and I already had your aquarium Co op fine poly pad. Win win. Your right aquariums are great for our mental health.
I enjoyed every minute of this video bro I’ve been watching you for years now and just recently got into the hobby again a few weeks ago with a 10 gallon!
Got panda corys, chili rasboras, & celestial pearl danios in my 10gal Got about 50 baby corys and built the Dean Inspired 3d printed fry trays in a 20gal Hooked. Ps shoutout Nolan’s Aqaurium, only LFS that carries Aqaurium Co-op in Orange County CA
I just replaced a rack that held two 75s & two 55s with a ten gallon rack with 24 10G tanks... I breed a lot of guppies/ live bearers, Corydoras and Bushynose plecos... 10 gallon tanks are very, very handy...! Especially for a breeder...!
I bought the Magic Nano as a second food to feed for variety for my chili rasboras (I was already feeding Bug Buffet which they love and it breaks down into very fine particles for them.) It quickly became just as popular as their other food and I love it because it hangs in the water column long enough for them to eat it all. I feed in a long tank and my chilis all come from all over when I put that food in, and their color is now a deeper red. Added bonus, my shrimp love it too.
I routinely watch the stream on Monday/Tuesday when I need to do a lot of behavior coding (animal behavior research). Having the chat on screen is awesome to see what people are talking about
Currently running 4 tanks, 2 are 10 gal and placed either side of our TV. They are great, plants look fantastic, easy to maintain and the occupants are happy and healthy. Such a great size.
This was awesome. 10 g tanks do rock!! And you know what? You and I are in agreement about the people we keep in our circles and the circles we choose to participate in. I am not interested in having ignorant people scream at me over their political beliefs and have cut and blocked people from my circle over that. And yep, I've been criticized and accused of creating an echo chamber around me and I'm in total agreement with you, like of course, I'm 67 years old, why would I want to waste my time with anger, ignorance and idiots, name calling, and acting uncivilized, when I have so many interests and circles where folks talk about the things I'm interested in like fish, aquariums, aquascaping, soap making, happy mail art, dogs and cats, houseplants, thrifting, yard sales and estate auctions, fiction books, photography, etc. There is absolutely no point in having people in my circles that are ugly natured and abusive towards me or anybody around me. I love a good debate, but I lnow for a fact grown, reasonable people can agree to disagree without getting ugly and abusive to each other. Top reason why I disengaged from a few fish pages and groups. If you can't behave like you've got some common "act right" I have absolutely zero interest in listening to you, seeing you, or supporting you while you're obviously having a good time being needlessly cruel and enjoying sucking the joy out of everybody you interact with. I wish we could teach children this at a young age. Don't feed into the negativity and cruelty of nasty people. Birds of a feather and all that. Your common sense, morals, character, and healthy balaced view of life in genera,l is one of the reasons I'm still here, still giving you a thumbs up and have been with you and Katie since the way back days, long before Aquarium CoOp was born. My opinion, everybody should create echo chambers of healthy, interesting people in their lives. 👍♥️👍
My 10 gallon tank is my favourite tank. I love it. It’s the one I spend most time observing and enjoying, it’s in my kitchen which helps. I barely need to touch it as it’s a planted natural tank. I would happily downsize my other tanks, but I can’t right now because I love my fancy goldfish too much they’re like puppies. Sometimes in the future I will definitely downsize them though.
My fish room is a majority of 10 gallon tanks on racks. 4 racks with 12 tanks on each. Perfect for growing a strain of guppies. Bottom tanks are breeding tanks, middle are fry (un-sexed), top row is female, female, male, male. I rack for each strain.❤
Very interesting! I am working on breeding guppies as well and have a mix of 5 and 10 gallons. How many tanks do you keep to maintain a single strain? I’ve heard numbers between 6 and 10 tanks, and maybe I’m a little dense, but never had it spelled out what goes in each, and I’m wondering if I’m missing something? 😊
53:45 lids are so expensive these days that I actually buy broken windows or aquariums of FB for dirt cheap and cut the non broken glass to fit my tanks. I wanted a lid for my 55 gallon and it was going to be over $100. But a cracked 20 gallon on marketplace was $5. Cut the silicone, toss the broken glass, and boom $5 lid for a 55 gallon
haha i just bought and finished setting up 10 gal today and I definitely feel you on this. So nice having something be easy and manageable. At first I found the design area limiting but you can create some very interesting vignettes in this size. I'm still getting that 75 gal but the 10 is so rewarding considering the space, time, and upfront cost! Thanks for all the knowledge sprinklings
I have a 29 gallon and a 16 gallon. The 16 could be a thorn in my side because it's riddled with algae. Even so, it's a shrimp tank, so the algae isn't a problem. Oh, let's not talk about the duck weed! heehee. My 29 has been up for three years, and it's well established, planted and easy for me to care for, I like to spend time triming plants and doing a little maintenance each week. I'm happy to say 2 out of four of my julii corey catfish were breeding and as miracles happen, 7 of the eggs she laid somewhere in there, survived to become new community members. We have a nice little family!
Sometimes you don't have the room for larger. I have two 10 gallon tanks, two 5 gallon tanks, one 20 gallon tank, one 55 gallon tank, and one 40 gallon pond (all freshwater). Each size restricts you to the size and/or amount of fish you can keep. I also have one 3 gallon saltwater with corals/snails only, and an empty 3 gallon for use as a med tank. I have had algae issues in most of the tanks and pond in the past, but now, I've homed in the light and plants so that there isn't any at all, or very minimal algae. Also, snails help with the algae issues a lot, specifically nerites! I'm doing weekly water changes and amount of water varies based on how many nitrites are detected.
I have that exact aquarium. I have two. . And the same brand but a 20 gallon. Lol.... One ten gallon has chain loaches (they were a happy accident) in it, and the other one has platy and guppies. I live in a small apartment on the second floor, and I can't set my 55-gallon up until we move. Which is soon. I gotta say I do love my ten gallon tanks. 😊 But I can't wait to set up my 55-gallon... 😊
I had to watch the replay of the livestream. I watched in several parts. Each time I restarted I had an ad. Didn't bother me but just added this for your info.
I have a 11 gallon long (32 inches long) that is my favorite tank right now. I have some Venezuelan Red Sail Cory’s and chili rasboras in it, and the Cories spawn pretty regularly and I have 2 more cories than I started with without even trying. It is planted with crypts, hydrocotyle tripartita, dwarf sag and bucephilandra. I recently added some neocardinas that I took out of my shrimp tank. It is now super stable. I do a water change every few weeks. It sits on the bar between the kitchen and family room and the tank is viewable from both sides. I have a Finnex PX 150 compact canister on one end and added a small sponge on the other to get a good flow through the length of the tank. My light is the Hygger Smart light and my plants are growing so much I have had to thin out both the sag and some of the crypts. My substrate is a coarse natural sand.
@ it is made by Lifegard Aquatics and I bought if on Amazon. I wish the glass was a bit thicker (it is 5mm which is pretty standard for 10 and less tanks, but with longer sides it does flex slightly) because of the long sides, but is otherwise a nice tank.
Ten gallons are cool, but I looooove my nano tanks! They are the best balanced and most attractive planted tanks I have. Don’t sleep on nano tanks, guys!
I don't think bigger is always better for aquariums. It's easier to keep the water parameters stable and you have more room for fish but it's way more maintenance time and all that extra water weight worries me. I've had a lot of fresh water, salt water aquariums and even kept the very finnicky and hard carpet anemone which thrived. So I know what I'm talking about and the longer I stay in this hoppy the more I realize, bigger just isn't always better and usually it's the opposite. You will get the opposite sentiment in forums and reddit but trust me, you can get just as much fun from smaller (40 gal breeder or less) aquariums than bigger ones. Having bigger aquarium means you can keep fish that you can't keep in smaller tanks such as comet goldfish, arowana, oscar, etc. But you can still keep many fish with personalities in smaller thank like angelfish, dwarf cichlids, pea puffers, paradise fish (careful with the last two for aggression). And there is beauty in simplicity. A well planted 20 gallon long or 40 gallon breeder with a couple groups of schooling fish like tetras and rasboras can make your aquarium look so beautiful. Like, having 40 gallon jungle type planted tanked with 25 cardinal tetras, 15+ diamond tetras, 10+ corydoras can be so simple yet so beautiful.
Hi, thanks for some 10 gallon support. Strictly from a financial point of view I find 15, 20, and 29 gallons, and even larger sizes cheaper per gallon to set up, of course. But over time I definitely see how we can get more for our money and effort with the ordinary 10. They are very enjoyable and accessible. I have been in the hobby for decades (1980), like many listeners. Take time to watch your aquariums, friends.
For most people they want a planted community tank and there's no easier tank than a 10 gallon to make it look great for the least amount of time and money. Even a 20 gallon to setup with all the kit, filtration, lights etc then fill with plants and fish can be quite expensive and time consuming. A 10 gallon is definitely that sweet spot for the type of setup most people want.
As I'm currently running out of room for my breeding tanks I'm looking real hard into how big of a tank i really need, to get what i want done. ( I'm going with a 29 but I definitely will look at 10s for my next round of tanks)
Enjoyed the replay my daughter put a few of her guppies in my 20 long a few months ago it exploded I have tried to move all the males out to my other 20L but good grief there is so many babies I don’t know what to do. I have 2 honey gourami in there but they don’t help and my poor ember tetras can’t get away from them. I think they are beautiful but I dont know what to do at this point 😢. Anywho!!!Hope you all have a great week and thanks for all you do.
I received a 10 gallon the other day. It contains 3 (what I think are) shubunkin goldfish. Looks like I’m digging a pond and transferring the guppies from the 5 gallon
Definitely something I thought about and will consider. I myself might need to move a bit where I am on screen, to make room for chat, but don't want to lose the tank either.
@1:34:00 dansfish was talking about this a week or so ago on his live stream.people getting midroll ads when he has them off. he also complained about the VODS having ads put on them he has to go in and delete
For bigger sizes, at first, yeah they’re more difficult. But once it’s established larger tanks allow for more human error before sh!t hits the fan. Which is why bigger tanks are often easier. I’ve got a 75g that I maintenance once a month and it generally looks “good”. I rescape all the time though and that’s where the therapy comes in.
lol i live in europe and i have the same opinion about a 70l roughly 15 galon fish tank i love the size its easy to water chance a bucket of 5 galon is enough weekly and i have stable parameters
i do need the 55g barrel of mayonnaise, for my aamerican cichlids lol. Hoping the Co-op launches a big 3mm-5mm pellet for the few of us that have monster fish
I have a bunch of tanks I got for free, my biggest tank that i have is a 10gal. Most people make 20gal the minimum standard for having happy fish otherwise its torture. 10gal being the best is music to my ears, go on :)
Has anyone ever experienced the caulking on the corners of your tank bubble? I had a 65 gallon Aqueon for a few years and the caulking began to bubble so a year ago, I purchased another 65 gallon Seapora tank and the same thing began to happen again?
I can't find guppy's, sword tails, neon tetras, or pepper or panda Cory's, hatchet fish and otocinclus or cherry barbs locally. I can't afford the extra high cost of shipping so I am just out of luck unless I can find a local club member selling them.😢
Bioaquatix is just a couple miles from me... Cool guy...! We thought about buying his property... It's priced right if you're a fish guy or girl...! 2.5 acres with greenhouses...
It is amazing how many people are not aware of ad blocker. Get an ad blocker browser and then you'll have no ads on any TH-cam videos save the ads where the channel host itself is reading the ad
I think you're right, but also google is actively trying to prevent known ad blockers not working chrome etc. At this point it's a game of cat and mouse every week between extension makers and google. Firefox doesn't have this problem currently. Only because google downs chrome is that the main issue.
@TheKeegan55555 because they can get large if thier not stunted from too small a tank. I have a 1 year old fantail currently 8 inches and rounder than a tennis ball looks too large for the 29 gallon it's in.
It can sit there I just don't want loes money when it walks out the door....are you worried about opportunity costs? Legit question not trying to flame...how do you assess what stays and what gets "discounted"
A LFS owner informed me that the aquariums petco sells are of lesser quality. The owner used to work for Aqueon. They have a contract with Aqueon that allows them to sell the tanks at low prices.
@@stevef3521 that guy misinformed you. You should be very careful taking his advice in future. He is obviously fine with lying to sell you a tank, who knows what else he'll lie to you about.
@@michaelrael3278I was calling around to shops in 3 states trying to find an odd size tank that’s no longer in production. He wasn’t trying to sell me anything. I appreciate you looking out for me.
That is 100% misinformation...! That's not how production facilities operate...!!! All your statement proves is that neither, or LFS owner have never been in a high volume production/assembly line facility...! While we're at it, hit me up... I have a great bridge for sale in Arizona......
I know this is an older video, but I have to chime in in regards to shipping costs in Europe, or at least in EU countries. Garnelio offers free international shipping, yes, for certain countries and only on orders above like... 200€+. Live and bulky goods generally don't count if you want free shipping, either. The only page that offers free shipping above a reasonable margine is Olibetta (49€+), the rest are 100-150€+, like Aquaristikshop, and Green Aqua. Aquasabi has changed (doubled) their shipping prices recently, and lost a lot of Croatian customers because of it. 🥲 So whenever someone says shipping in EU is cheap, I don't know whether to laugh or cry, when shipping for a poor, little Croatian is 15-20€ in most international EU stores.

Gee; he's right.Lining up 10 x 10 gallon jugs of milk seems massive vis a vis a 10 gallon tank.

great vid again, i love my 10gallon

Does the forum have an app?

I have a Finnex PX 150 compact canister on one end and added a small sponge on the other to get a good flow through the length of the tank. My light is the Hygger Smart light and my plants are growing so much I have had to thin out both the sag and some of the crypts. My substrate is a coarse natural sand.
Wow, it sounds beautiful! I've never heard of that size here in Canada.
Doesn't the dimensions play the role of a 10 gal make a difference as well? Ex: UNS 60S 23.6" x 14.17" x 7.08" to an Aquen 20.25" x 10.5" x 12.63"
I'm getting ready to build a 10 gallon for my first Betta. 7:44
I recommend fancy guppies, they're more fun for a 10 gallon
Just got my mini fishroom set up. Have (4) 10 gallon tanks set up so far, and have another 10 gallon and (2) 5 gallons that need set up too.
Hello Cory!
Do you ever shiped something from your store in Europe- Romania? Fish food or acvarium water filters or so...?
I received a 10 gallon the other day. It contains 3 (what I think are) shubunkin goldfish. Looks like I’m digging a pond and transferring the guppies from the 5 gallon
I really like seeing the tank behind you so if you go with the chat on screen, can it be on the other side?
Definitely something I thought about and will consider. I myself might need to move a bit where I am on screen, to make room for chat, but don't want to lose the tank either.
@1:34:00
dansfish was talking about this a week or so ago on his live stream.people getting midroll ads when he has them off.
he also complained about the VODS having ads put on them he has to go in and delete
Selling all the lights out is heartbreaking… I know how much that light meant to Cory. Hopefully you can find another manufacturer.
I want to puchase another heater for my 10 gallon tank. I love the one I purchased from Aquarium Coop, but they stopped selling them😢
great video. I love watching them but I have to play it at a faster speed... he talks so slow. lol
Where are you guys at in Ky? I may be interested in a trucking job if you guys need someone in Ky.
We are in Lexington, but at the moment don't have a trucker position :)
@@AquariumCoop Thank you. You're only about 65 miles from me.
Keep the chat on screen!!
I have a bunch of tanks I got for free, my biggest tank that i have is a 10gal. Most people make 20gal the minimum standard for having happy fish otherwise its torture. 10gal being the best is music to my ears, go on :)
I love my 10 gallon.
I have two racks of 10 gallons 1 with 10 tanks, one with 12 tanks, they are very useful.
Nice, Would love to see pics on the forum. forum.aquariumcoop.com
I can't afford the extra high cost of shipping so I am just out of luck unless I can find a local club member selling them.😢
A 10 gallon is also a lot more manageable if it breaks than a larger tank. 10 gallons of water on the floor is a nightmare, but it has nothing on 40
Bioaquatix is just a couple miles from me... Cool guy...! We thought about buying his property... It's priced right if you're a fish guy or girl...! 2.5 acres with greenhouses...
I think a lot of times bigger means more successful .....so alot of people go that route
@AquariumCoop agree
Only thing about a 10 gallon is i can't have goldfish😢
I have a bubble eye goldfish in a 10 gallon.
@LarryWater that's awesome. I wonder why people are saying just 1 would need a 20 gallon tank? That seems overkill.
@TheKeegan55555 because they can get large if thier not stunted from too small a tank. I have a 1 year old fantail currently 8 inches and rounder than a tennis ball looks too large for the 29 gallon it's in.
I don't feed my bubble eye that much, so that's probably why he stayed small.
Do your tanks come with a hand written Cory autograph ?
Thats crazy i have around 100 of 150 red swordtails that just keep multiplying 😂
hey kid's rock and roll
12 bucks a tank? I wish I lived there. We have the same brand tank. 40 bucks on sale
I don't think it's the maintenance. I barely do anything on my 10 gallons and they still look better than my 40s and my 75.
Well I'm not convinced I totally have the "magic" of the 10 gallon figured out. Other than to say, there is something magical about 10 gallons.
It can sit there I just don't want loes money when it walks out the door....are you worried about opportunity costs? Legit question not trying to flame...how do you assess what stays and what gets "discounted"
LFG baby.
I'm watching on my TV. I dislike the chat on the screen.
10gallons, optimal for single species breeding. easy upkeep.
Hit me up. I will show you my tank that is plant maintnence and top up only. Fully stable. and 4 gens of guppies
10 gallon tanks have a place in the hobby but aren’t actually that great in my opinion
Corey is just a salesman trying to sell….
So whenever someone says shipping in EU is cheap, I don't know whether to laugh or cry, when shipping for a poor, little Croatian is 15-20€ in most international EU stores.
