I live in Hengelo, a city nextdoor of Enschede, as well and I was just one block away when SE Fireworks exploded. We were almost hit by a containerdoor that slammed into a car (and demolished half a house) straight in front of us.

Several years earlier the last actuals good quality firework factory that made mostly fountains was pressured to shut its business. After that debacle the whole politics and police did not know what to to do. Easiest and wisest was to look at how fireworks are dealt within surrouding countries such as Germany. Hi, I am glad that you show people more than just Amsterdam. Twente is wonderful. But I have another tip for you. Go see Zutphen. It has one of the biggest Librijes. And is a historical monument in itself.
Nice historical city center too! Has very medieval European village vibes. A lot of spiritually aligned people and shops too if that's your fancy. Supposedly the city is on a ley line.

The Saturday market and the square by the 'Grote Kerk' are the best parts of Enschede. The best nachos I have ever had can be enjoyed at Molly Malone's Irish pub next to the church.

Greetings from Enschede - really pleased that you enjoyed our city. You obviously liked the food. But I never saw you get on a bicycle - so it did not seem at all like the Enschede that I know in love. Next time you come, I recommend that you hire bikes and then you’ll be able to get out and see the real city. The countryside around is also wonderful! And on the dedicated cycle paths, you don’t have to fight with noise in motorcars. A final recommendation is the Marktplaats - so many terraces surrounding this Market Square. And it’s so peaceful without the pollution from motorcars.
That bread is Turkish 😁 I was born and raised in Enschede and still live there. I lived 200 meter from the explosions, will never forget how my windows came blowing in. Enschede is a very nice place to live.
At one point in history during the Textile boom, Enschede was the richest City in Europe. Now it's one of the poorest but gezelligste in the Netherlands. A bit farther away and pretty hard to get to is the Marcook's restaurant, they serve the best ribs and great 20 hour smoked Brisket. On a sunny day the oude markt is one of the best places to sit and watch people go by. Also great nature spots around the city and great little towns like Ootmarsum and de Lutte.
Nice that you have visited my formal hometown (in the meantime I've moved a bit southwards). The foodhall was officially opened by queen Maxima, I was also there.
If you really like special beer, next time you visit Enschede you should go to De Vluchte, its the bar my parents own and we have a changing stock of over 200 different special beers, AND we have a walk-in fridge, so far we're the only cafe in Enschede with a walk-in fridge!! 🎉
Where you ate your sandwiches, the little brook with the concrete slabs in it, is also one of the monuments for the SE Fireworks disaster of 13-05-2000. Keeping in remembrance of all the houses which were destroyed in the explosions and following fire.

We had to pick up a family member in Enschede after the firework explotion! I still remember he had tears in his eyes when brought to safety.. We live nearby, like 20minutes away from Enschede
My home town, I could spot a house of a friend. I was 14 when the disaster happened and missed a week of school since it was damaged during the disaster.
If you 2 come back to Enschede, a must is to visit Lonneker!! It’s a small village. They have this supermarkt where people with dissabilities work there. They make fresh sandwiches, fresh salat and they make tosti’s. They would love if you come. Also it is such a cute Little village
Enschede is a very popular shopping and fun city in the east of the Netherlands and particularly with our eastern neighbors due to its location close to the border which gives it toghether with the University and Saxion and more than 160 nationalities a very international vibe for a dutch city this size. It is also a beloved student city and therefore there are plenty of cafes and entertainment venues in the city, especially on and around the Oude Market in the city centre. Especially on busy Saturday market days you can walk over the heads of many different people who come to the Enschede market for the ''Hollandse Vis'', lakritz (drop) and coffeeshops.
I used to live in Enschede and even went to school there. It has changed a lot since we moved there in '79. The food scene is now pretty decent compared to even a decade ago.
Next stop Hoekse Waard?. The island next to Dordrecht (take the Kiltunnel to 's-Gravendeel). You can visit a few of the (historic) villages while biking or driving threw the lovely countryside.
You two were so close to my home, what a surprise! I feel ashamed by the fact that I'm going to learn about new local places to check out based on your experiences... I really need to try new things more often! Above all I'm glad you had a great time!
Things not mentioned: Enschede was one of many small cities (3-5k inhabitants hence the relatively small historic centre) out in the countryside and then industrialisation hit in the shape of the textile industry. Go see Ootmarsum for instance to see such a city that didn't make it into the big league. It also was the last city in the Netherlands that burned down (wars excluded), in 1862.
Nice video. I'm going to univ of twente this year, so it's always nice to see video about enschede. One of the reasons I choose UT is bcs I love small town like enschede. It looks chill n cozy without the hustle bustle of big city. And the shops are just a short distance away from the centrum, no need to take transportation. N bordering with Germany is a bonus, more options for daily necessities. Even before going there, I've already fallen for enschede ;)
What a coincidence. I was in Enschede just the week after you went. I arrived on April the 20th. I ran the marathon the next day and took a week vacation after. Enschede itself was not that much, as most of the centre burnt down in 1862. I cycled a lot in the surroundings and the countryside around Enschede is very pretty. I do see that I missed some interesting visits in Enschede self.
You found Mezze & Stanislaus! The sandwich went in as expected 😅. The cheese I use for cooking. Near the foodhall there is also TAO, a very good sushi restaurant. In the same street is a nice Italian. Just across the footpath in front of Mezze there is the Brandaris, a good fish shop. You might like the Abraham Ledeboer park for taking photographs.
Oh my gosh, so fun to see you guys visit my hometown! Mezze is my favourite place to get “borrelhapjes” and limoncello (they destill their own)! I love this city and your videos! ❤
You should try Texas Ribhouse. Lot of locations in Twente and the eastern part of the Netherlands. Now that is an entire restaurant western themed including the employees and everything. If you buy the ''Fred Flintstone'' steak there they will come out with an entire entourage and sing and cheer for you. Also great cocktails. Good fun. Love and kisses from Enschede
This reminds me, once on a trip with two friends we were really hungry and drove into some random village for the local Chinese or something, and the only thing there (Zeegse in Drenthe) was a Texas steakhouse. Those friends are food snobs and all the lighting was with huge American flags, I got a bit worried because rural Dutch doing Americana are usually also into dirt racing, tractor pulling, Dutch language country, competitive belching and hardly ever are accumstomed to the finer things. Inside the waitresses had stetson on, jeans, prarie boots, the portable card reader in a pistol holster, peanut shells all over the floor and beer came in half a liter jugs. So we got even more worried. But the rib eye and the tenderloin were excellent (food snobs don't order T-bones), the rest too, absolutely great. Turned out the place had a repution all the way up to the city of Groningen. Never judge a book by it's cover.
Welcome to my city. Enschede is also very old, city rights since 1325! but was ofcourse almost totally destroyed during the second world war. You have to come back on a warm summer night and spend your evening on the 'oude markt' the centrum with the church and all the little cafe's and restaurants. There will be live music, and a lot of buzz and people. Its great ! The other thing i like is going outside Enschede en within 5 minutes you are in the 'wood's' > its very green surroundings, lots of quiet places and nature. Its a great day to camp or stay on a camping and go shopping in Enschede.
Nice, my hometown. I was 28 when the firework explosion happened. And i lived 5 minutes from the explosion . You must watch video's of the disaster. You wont believe what you see.😢
I hope you have been able to give it a place. I was watching the events on tv. I feel like the entire country was in shock. I am happy they made some time to addres it.
@@buncharted 16 km away in Oldenzaal I thought it were two F16s from Twente Airforce base, going through the sound barrier. I worked at the National Telematics institute in the Nearby former Grolsch headquarters. The first few weeks after the explosion you did not hear birds in the area. After a few years working elsewhere I worked in Enschede Roombeek again for a few years until two years ago. The Twente area and nearby Germany are also nice to explore by bicycle. I recommend The castle of Bad Bentheim, the city of Münster. Oldenzaal only for the carnaval.
I WAS AN ENSCHEDE RESIDENT!!!! First time in Enschede, come taste the delicious Van der Poel ice cream close to the station. Try Hao Hao next time if you like Asian Woks and every Tuesday there's a market in the centrum which one of the seller sells delicious Falafel called Falafel Mama. If you like putt-putt golf games come to Glow Golf and if you like experiencing something unique while shopping, try shopping in Jumbo De Melkhal whose once was a milking parlour.
You went to Twente! My region. Nice to see. By the way you eat Turkish bread. For the textile industry a lot of people moved from the north to Twente. One of the brands that still exists is Ten Cate.
Nice to come across this video, i live in enschede actually i was born here. I saw some places in the video which i didn't know so thank you for thatXD
Yeah, I guess we have high food standards in Enschede 😄I can also recommend Mazza which is a Lebanese restaurant (visible in your outro!) or Tao, which is a fancy Japanese restaurant. The next time you go to Frank & Charlie (because, of course you will) I recommend the kimchi chicken or the bánh mi rendang.
Your the first Americans who went to show something else then Amsterdam or the tulips. And you even showed a town in me region. Greetings from Hengelo in Twente Good goan👍🏻
Shame you came at such a cold, rainy and quiet day. Enschede is much more lively during the market days on Tuesday and Saturday - though on Saturday it becomes a bit of a German colony. Also the public naturist beach Rutbeek just outside of Enschede is quite nice.
My parents lived there close for 10 years. And my mother had breast cancer at the time (Dank U medisch Twente). Neede is the best. And my grandparents are at the graveyard in Rietmolen.
Look at those sandwiches, amazing! Y'all (you all, how do you say that) are making progress in Dutch! The hardest thing is the 'sch' in, for example Enschede. Michelle you tried, and said ensKede. Did you know that in WW2 the best way to know if others were foreign and not to be trusted (not Dutch) is asking: can you say "achtentachtig kacheltjes"? (eighty-eight heaters). Pronounce was key.
Enschede also has the Grolsch brewery, one of the largest in The Netherlands. I've had the VIP tour there once, it was great! p.s. I double-checked, and am still subscribed 😄
Let me add to this: where you were sitting eating the sandwiches, stood the old Enschede Grolsch-fabriek: there was another location in another town, but they wanted to move both locations into one. The fireworks disaster, that damaged/set fire to the factory (and almost blowing two ammonia tanks on the roof to smithereens :-S ) where you were only sped up that process. (And yes, the factory was restored in the meantime; I do not know whether they are still online, but the transport of the gynormous brewing kettles via road to their current location was filmed. It was ... quite the spectacle!)
@@bunchartedwhy don’t you take an OV fiets or the bus? Even in Enschede an OV fiets is useful getting to the museum and from there to the city center. Or the campus of the University of Twente. Which is unique in the Netherlands.
worked as a mechanic at the time of the explosion and remember the busses of people and body parts being rushed to the hospital. It really gave me some sad memory watching this. But still thanks for the videos
Just to let you know, iwas a bus mechanic on duty at the time, and the busses were sent in to bring people to the hospital. Next days i had to change the blood stained seats with new ones. Brutale thinks

Rumours are you're planning on moving to Curaçao though? :)
@@brucelansberg5485 Yes, we moved this weekend!
Ah Enschede, I was stationed there when I was in the Airforce in ‘90 till ‘91 at the 313 Squadron. Good times!
So you DID visit Maze! ;)
Another great episode with lots of very tasty looking food. Especially that last breakfast serving! 👍
i moved in 2016 from Berkeley/Oakland to downtown Enschede(50 meters from the food hall)..best move i made.
that was turkish bread, very good and light. if you live near a turkish supermarket definitely pick some up, its great with plenty of things and on its own
And if you like the Turkish bread (*everyone likes Turkish bread), you should also try a "Turkish pizza" which is a Turkish bread with pizza(-style) toppings
aaa look my town. i am very proud of enschede. i think you will also like old Ootmarsum. i see that you like history. there you really go back in time. have fun in beautiful enschede greetings nathalie
Cool video by the way!
If you 2 come back to Enschede, a must is to visit Lonneker!! It’s a small village. They have this supermarkt where people with dissabilities work there. They make fresh sandwiches, fresh salat and they make tosti’s. They would love if you come. Also it is such a cute Little village
My grandparents on my moms side used to work in the fabric factory
I live in Enschede, about 5 minutes walking from the food factory.
Love it here!
I really enjoy your vids!
Lol me too, Beatrixstraat, literally across the street 😅
@@PeterDoornbos1981Pegida not alloud...
Thanks again for this nice video. I love the enthusiasm you put into it..... keep on going.
Yess welcome to the east of the Netherlands! i live in Hengelo myself, so it's fun to see foreigners making a video close to my home :D!
Dankzij het spoor en het Twentekanaal!
Was not expecting the city I've lived in for years to be featured like this. Usually tourists tend to overlook the eastern border of this country.
Darn you two, now I need to find a new and different sandwich... Lol Fun show
I live here 25 years and it's exactly that!!!
Make sure you sign up for the kick in
@@Xeando I did. Thx for reminding ;)
So fun to see my hometown in your vlog … born here and will never leave, the best place to live in…….
Oh you guys didn't try the Kozaks! They're delicious cookies made in Twente. Also no bakleverworst?! You're missing out!
I'm living near Enschede. Being born in Rotterdam, I love it here, living in Twente.
You might like the Abraham Ledeboer park for taking photographs.
it was from your recommendation like a year ago 😂
always a joy to watch you both on cool city trips gives me inspiration to travel by train to them whenever i have a week off have a awsome weekend
Oh my gosh, so fun to see you guys visit my hometown! Mezze is my favourite place to get “borrelhapjes” and limoncello (they destill their own)! I love this city and your videos! ❤
You were very lucky just walking into Frank & Charlie. Oftentimes theres a pretty long queue waiting outside
I loved reading this, thank you.
Turkish bread.. very fluffy it is called 'pide'. Try it with garlic sauce and Lamb-Shoarma and a tomatoesalad side..
Nice, my hometown. I was 28 when the firework explosion happened. And i lived 5 minutes from the explosion . You must watch video's of the disaster. You wont believe what you see.😢
we saw them at the museum - it was absolutely insane to watch. really put it into perspective
@@buncharted There were actual homes pushed away from their foundations, that's how insane powerful the explosion was.
I hope you have been able to give it a place. I was watching the events on tv. I feel like the entire country was in shock. I am happy they made some time to addres it.
I was more then 50 kilometers away and could see the smoke...horrible
@@buncharted 16 km away in Oldenzaal I thought it were two F16s from Twente Airforce base, going through the sound barrier. I worked at the National Telematics institute in the Nearby former Grolsch headquarters. The first few weeks after the explosion you did not hear birds in the area. After a few years working elsewhere I worked in Enschede Roombeek again for a few years until two years ago. The Twente area and nearby Germany are also nice to explore by bicycle. I recommend The castle of Bad Bentheim, the city of Münster. Oldenzaal only for the carnaval.
I love all yr videos guys. Great to see Enschede (I have never visited) 😂
Nice video again, I really enjoyed it, thanks for the time you always put into it
You totally missed out on Van der Poel! Best icecream in the world! 😮
Love your videos guys. You make very nice videos. Love it !!❤️ Michelle, you pronunciation of Dutch is excellent.👏👏👏
You mist the Biggest Galerie in Town..Volksgalerie DVA near by metze next to flowers and the supermarket.
So fun to see you emjoy my hometown. ❤
I live in Enschede but the last time i was in the museum fabriek was 6 years ago
I live in Hengelo and love going to Enschede because the shops there are a lot beter than Hengelo. Great video ❤
funny to see my hometown from a tourists perspective, hope you enjoyed your stay
Nice to come across this video, i live in enschede actually i was born here. I saw some places in the video which i didn't know so thank you for thatXD
02:08 If you leave Dutch cheese near amunitions, it becomes Swiss cheese at some point right?
Yeah, I guess we have high food standards in Enschede 😄I can also recommend Mazza which is a Lebanese restaurant (visible in your outro!) or Tao, which is a fancy Japanese restaurant. The next time you go to Frank & Charlie (because, of course you will) I recommend the kimchi chicken or the bánh mi rendang.
My home town love this
The rating for the ribs was so relatable. 😊 weer een leuke aflevering!
I always go to enschede to go out and eat drink and explore stores and shop and do lots of stuff
Your the first Americans who went to show something else then Amsterdam or the tulips. And you even showed a town in me region.
Greetings from Hengelo in Twente
Good goan👍🏻
For me, being Dutch, Enschede is mostly known for the 2000 firework disaster.
Try Zwolle one time a small city
Its a “hanzestad” in the Netherlands in the year 1230
so is enschede...
@@mikivanduyn9630No it’s not 😂😅
Slightly feel like I walked past you guys at some point without realizing it (I live very closely to that mezze delicatessen)
Shame you came at such a cold, rainy and quiet day. Enschede is much more lively during the market days on Tuesday and Saturday - though on Saturday it becomes a bit of a German colony.
Also the public naturist beach Rutbeek just outside of Enschede is quite nice.
it was actually quite nice most of that first day
My parents lived there close for 10 years. And my mother had breast cancer at the time (Dank U medisch Twente). Neede is the best. And my grandparents are at the graveyard in Rietmolen.
Geen broodje beenham uit de Grolsch veste?
Cees Links, who studied at the Universiteit Twente, played an important role in developing and marketing Wi-Fi.
I appreciate the visit ❤
Originally from Eindhoven, I studied at the UT (same abbreviation as the University of Texas) in the 90s and still living there. 🤷🙃
MY HOMETOWNN
Look at those sandwiches, amazing! Y'all (you all, how do you say that) are making progress in Dutch! The hardest thing is the 'sch' in, for example Enschede. Michelle you tried, and said ensKede. Did you know that in WW2 the best way to know if others were foreign and not to be trusted (not Dutch) is asking: can you say "achtentachtig kacheltjes"? (eighty-eight heaters). Pronounce was key.
Finished my evening diner just a few minutes ago .....
I AM SO HUNGRY RIGHT NOW! Maybe drive in my car to this place 60, maybe 70km away?
Almost 20k subs! On to the 25k mark!
The Tardis from Dr. Who was not disguised as a phone booth, it was a police box.
haha i live in hengelo, so really close. twente is so under appreciated !! perhaps visit hengelo too some day :)
Of Almelo. Een stoplicht springt op rood, een ander op groen...
Wat valt er te zien in Hengelo of Almelo? 😂
@@pacaskurban Een stoplicht springt op rood, een ander weer op groen, in Almelo is altijd wat te doen
Enschede also has the Grolsch brewery, one of the largest in The Netherlands. I've had the VIP tour there once, it was great!
p.s. I double-checked, and am still subscribed 😄
we really wanted to go but it was kind of a challenge to get there without a car 🥲
@@bunchartedlol..
by bus you can get anywhere within 20 minutes.
i have lived in Enschede my whole life and i have seen things in this video that i have never seen
I'm sure nothing beats the real deal, actual bbq in Texas. 😍🤤
Damnit now I'm hungry! 😭
The best chicken in the Netherlands, if not the world, is served at De Muur in Enschede
down town enschede...
worked as a mechanic at the time of the explosion and remember the busses of people and body parts being rushed to the hospital. It really gave me some sad memory watching this. But still thanks for the videos
Just to let you know, iwas a bus mechanic on duty at the time, and the busses were sent in to bring people to the hospital. Next days i had to change the blood stained seats with new ones. Brutale thinks
The Tardis is actually a so called Policebox, not a phonebooth.
oh shit, you’re right!
Road to 20K lets go!
8:40 than you should have go to Texas steakhouse :)
