To be fair, the lack of routine is not necessarily the lack of order. You can intuit when you must do stuff to be able to focus exclusively on work or exclusively on recreation. Routine = Structure, but No routine isn't necessarily no structure
This is the kind of video that made me start watching your videos. I started watching your videos about two years ago and I haven’t stopped since. You’re my favorite TH-camr and I hope you progress even further in TH-cam ✌🏼
This video is in the core of this channel. Discussing the problems of a one-man-company trying to make a meaningful and honest-to-self contribution to the world and oneself. Great cinematography, fast-paced storytelling and not a second wasted watching this one. Thanks.
I live on a daily basis between having a routine from M to F, and then not having anything planned for Saturday and Sunday. This two days I feel depressed and like a failure, without enjoying the "freedom" I earned during the week. Thank you, this has opened my eyes on how I might enjoy my free time: actually planning for something instead of numbing my brain because "I am resting". This might seriously help me with depression!
I did the same thing, but I didn't plan anything. I used to follow a daily routine and had a work schedule. However, something tragic happened, and I fell out of my routine for a year now. and Now, I feel useless and lazy, even though I'm working and making money . I spend my days watching videos playing games .... , feeling like I'm wasting time. After watching your video, I realized. wait a minute! I was happier with a routine because I felt productive and closer to my goals. Having a routine in life isn't as dull as some think , but it helps me understand myself and improve each day.
If you have kids, the routine becomes more ingrained and before you know it, you'll really see what "woah that went by fast" can mean. Thanks for another great video! - I tried playing in it in the background while working but alas got no work done :)
This video perfectly captured the issues I had in the past year and I think is a must watch for any student out there struggling with the freedom one has in this part of life. I really did make the same experiences you describe: When I have a lot on my plate and a routine, I get way more done, feeling more productive and can actually enjoy my freetime. When I do not have all this, I can do more leisure activities, but I cannot actually enjoy them or feel bad that I did. Also, enjoying leisure activities and doing smaller tasks while the big ones keep laying around did not make me feel like I accomplished anything. For me, the hardest part still is to find a middleground between no routine and strict routine. Because questioning your routine everyday takes a lot of willpower away. At the same time it is hard to follow a routine when the only one holding you accountable in the shortrun is yourself. The-no-routine-time went on to an extent where the lack of routine effected my psychological well-being, I was questioning myself and my ability to acomplish ANYTHING and wondered how I did it before. Now, I really want to stick to a routine again, because I felt actually better and only avoided it because of the fear of 'life rushing by'. But then again - life rushing by while one is enjoying it, is not that bad.
I have watched u for ages and ur style of video is incredible. These videos capture ur obsessive desire to find that balanced joy and adventure. These are inspiring and realistic and just wanted to say thx for producing this awesome Content.
Watching this video was my scheduled rest today. If I insert 2 or 3 short free time into my strict routine I feel that is allowed, and it still can be a highly productive day for me. You can only STOP working but never DONE with it in my opinion. Thank you for the great video.
I used to design routines but then I would feel disappointed about myself for not sticking to them. I was overplanning too. Too many goals at the same time. Now I just plan weekly goals. Everyday I choose the goals I want to work on, keeping the big picture in mind. I don't want a predictable life, I like to surprise myself. Repetitive days are bo-ring. At the end of the week I review how many goals I actually accomplished, and try to do better planning the week after. It's been a month I do this system. I used to plan twice as much as I could actually do. Now I only overplanned by 10%... I'm pretty proud. Getting better. I also did a yearly goals thing, on a 30-page word document... with a coach. It helped me figure out my priorities. I may revise those priorities in the future, but at least it's a starting point. Like you said : having strictly 0 routine means that everything is important equally. It's too overwhelming for the mind, it's actually tiring.
I really really needed that. I struggle so hard with my master thesis right now, I have no daily or weekly structure, procrastinate a lot and it makes me depressed. Will structure my days now! Thank you :)
I have ALWAYS had problems procrastinating. I totally understand why the life of no routine wasn't all it's cracked up to be. I feel if I had zero routine anxiety over things I should be doing and depression might follow. Yet, I am not so disciplined with time management to follow such a strict schedule with lists and allocated time for every little task either, that would drive me MAD! For me I think the key is to list things I NEED to do and things I'd LIKE to do, but this might be weekly rather than daily. That gives me at least a little structure but also the freedom to do things or not depending on mood and energy etc. Fantastic video Jonne, always an inspiration 😊
Amazing video! This topic really strikes home for me. It's funny how telling ourselves that a week off of a schedule is going to be sooo liberating, when in the end it just turns out to be a mush of random things that are neither fully productive nor fully enjoyable. What struck me the most is the quote from deep work, that freetime is actually harder to be shaped into something that can be enjoyed. This is SO true! Never really thought about it but damn that's an eye opening statement... I too end up not knowing what to do when i have my free-time during a structured day of work. I'll make sure I put more thought into not only planning my worktime but also my freetime. Love this content, thanks Jonne!
Great one, love when you do vids like this. I think it’s like with everything, a balance is best. Cheers mate and thanks for this one, really cheered me up 😊🙏🏻
Dude, it was sooooo good!!! This video is very revealing. Opens the subject very well!! Cinematography when you are lying on the floor in despair and the camera is spinning above you - brilliant !!
Thanks for the video, I didn’t even watch the first part, but it just killed me how many times I nodded my head and said “yeah, it’s exactly the same for me.” Now it’s so obvious why things haven’t been going well for me for the last two months, but without outside eyes, perhaps I wouldn’t have seen the light soon. Thanks again.
Would be really interesting to have like an overview about the cost of moving places. Like rent/house-price etc. Keep up the awesome vids. You deserver so much more attention and subs IMO !
amazing video! I truly believe in structured schedule and found that making "dopamine map" helps me enjoy my free time more, just writing down what makes me happy and specificate how much time I need to do it andbased of that choose what to do with my free time
😊 love this video! I don't follow strict routines but I do notice that I don't get anything important done when I work from home instead of going to the office, even though I save an hour of commute. I also think that no matter what kind of routine you are doing, in order to get work done you have to start doing the work. Doesn't matter if you wake up at 5 or 9 or if you meditate or not. And I agree that it's often difficult to enjoy free time, especially now in winter when all sunshine hours are during your Work-Time and you are just exhausted by the end of the day. Maybe it would help to have some kind of list with free time activities that take weather, mood, energy level etc into consideration
So have you figured out your "perfect" combination of both? Your resume in the end states exactly what I think of strict routines but just as in your first week, without the routines I don't get enough stuff done and feel guilty a lot of times for not working more. I'd love to see your solution to that :) Love your videos!
Wow and just like that he explained my life, well the first half of the video that is and why I kept on feeling tired even though I havent done much, anyway thank you ❤
I guess, as with most things in life, a happy medium is the answer :) At least I feel good with having some structure but no rigid routine. I like to adjust my structure to how I feel that day, how my energy levels are etc.
Hey! Was watching this again and saw you wearing a Whoop band. Video idea: a guide to use whoop for measuring and getting insights about daily exercises. Maybe collaborate with whoop.
Uitstekend video, Jonne! I just knew you must be Dutch listening to you. Thank you for creating your own life laboratory so that I don't have to go through the emotional torment of a routine-free or a routine-dominant week. LOL I know that I need structure...but not too much structure. And, I'm learning to enjoy free time without guilt. Bedankt!
I was wondering if it was in Sweden because of the lake then I saw "Flyttlåda" on one of the box and a Lindahls Kvarg yogurt in the kitchen. TJENA KOMPIS ! 🇸🇪
This is what I've been feeling for years since I started working for myself. Some weeks I feel so fulfilled, and most weeks I feel like every day went by with a blend of half-assed work, extending long into the evening. As a videographer, the waking up overexposed line got me laughing so hard 😂
Some very interesting reflections Jonne! Thanks for sharing them. Also: I love the idea of "you're only allowed to work with the electricity you've generated yourself"! :)
Great video! For a conclusion thought: try a RPM system- it’s a result focused, purpose driven, massive action plan Great for being productive, but not to run in circles of a routine. 😊
I like having a bit of structured/ semi unstructured well, during the end of the week/weekends. Also should work on learning more Swedish because Julkalendern’ stats next month.
I am always tempted to learn Norwegian as well but maybe in a couple years. I am managing 6 different languages which is enough. Maybe someday I will learn Norwegian. I heard Norwegian has more German vocabulary borrowed from German whereas Swedish has more French. And that Norway has their own version of Julkalendar but I haven't seen it yet. @@TheUnlazyWay
Great video! For the record, still really happy to see variety on the channel, but I understand views will dictate videos since everyone has gotta eat. One point I’d disagree with: you don’t need to “earn” a trip to swim in a lake with your partner. I know this thinking is normal about everything, but it’s a touch dangerous imho. While you can enjoy free time more when your work life is squared away, I think it’s problematic to think of needing to earn it. Take care!
this is what I am stuck on in my personal life, what am I to do with all this free time? I am not happy with it all. I find it easier to work more and have less free time. but i am trying to learn/figure out a way to deal with larger amounts of free time
Do you need caffeine if you had enough sleep? Proper sleep could be part of your routine too :) sometimes we underestimate the amount of hours we actually need to sleep
Yes these are the type of videos most of us loved about you lol
I wanted to reply with the exact same sentiment.
