Regarding your comment that the apocalypse is always timely, Terry Pratchett actually said a similar thing in other books, but his point was that apocalypses happen all the time. When a valley floods or a volcano explodes or raiders wipe out a village, that's an apocalypse. Anyone who survives has lost everything: family, friends, home, livelihood, possessions. Their world has ended. The fact that the apocalypse was invisible to 99% of the population of the planet is irrelevant.

Pratchett asked Gaiman to make an adaptation to the book, one he would like, as a dying wish. Every time Neil would be asked to compromise or change something he wasn't sure about, something he would normally let show runners do in the past if it made sense, he would hear Sir Terry's voice in the back of his head saying "fuck 'em"
the 'that's not how that works' about the intentionally incorrect American details is a tongue in cheek poke at the cartoonish wrong details about everywhere else in the world in US shows (Lost was a ... fascinating experience as an Australian), it is also an intentionally twee version of reality though so it's equal opportunity wrongness. I'm really enjoying your episodes, i LOVE a good discussion of meta and in-depth pulling a show apart. I definitely missed the part about the book authors he knew were executed! It's making me want to re-read the book too.

Humans gonna human was pretty much Pratchett's philosophy. I'd definitely recommend his book The Hogfather and to a lesser extent the TV adaptation for his best take on it.
