I’m a pulmonary and Critical Care fellow and I want to let you know that those of us who walk amongst the patients (joking) really do feel that pathologists are among the most intelligent physicians out there. I have no clue how you retain so much information, but yet I can tell you that your profession is the ONLY profession that most physicians rely on and trust in with certainty. Even radiologist are questioned daily and mis-read imaging on the simplest of images, but when a pathology report comes on, we take it at word value. So, you have an incredibly important job and I couldn’t do what you do, so please, keep up the amazing work and continue helping your patients by learning and continuing to be who you are.
Thank you for the videos :)

path first yr resident here, thank you for this. path is a very unspoken about specialty in general and especially the hardships that come with it that are so different from other specialties. went through exactly the feeling you were describing.. its this never ending feeling of not knowing enough, even when i come prepared or think ive finally got the grasp of something after learning the hard way, there seems to be something else I did not know or didnt do well enough. its exhausting. i love the specialty but the beginning is so hard... im still trying to navigate the feeling of this is normal its how I will learn and mistakes are how you learn its the normal part of the process versus I need to be doing more and better. Thank you for sharing this relatable content that isnt shared by many people! Best of luck to all of us in this, take it easy and keep trying your best. giving myself the same advice. And if u have any tips you learn along this journey to make things feel easier pls do share!

It really stings to hear those things but you will be better because you have the right mindset. Don’t forget what you said, not being like others does not nullify your worth. Don't worry if you don't know everything in PGY1, no one does. Pathology is more challenging than other specialties early on because most medical students don't get good histology training or exposure to pathology. For grossing, whipples are one of the most complex specimens you can get. For mastectomies, it takes a while to get the feeling of cancer vs fibrous tissue (always correlate with imaging). The more you do the better you'll get, but don't ever be afraid to ask a PA (pathology assistant, or a senior resident) for help when grossing. That is the best advice I can give.

Your vulnerability is truly refreshing, of course not diminishing your struggles but I've had moments like these and so have many others who care about their performance and responsibilities. You're very much self aware and your ending comments were absolutely fitting. I recall someone saying that you should never compare yourself to anyone else, but only to the previous version of yourself; in the process of growing and striving to be the person you want to be. Wishing you the very best for yourself and for all the patients who will/have benefited from your struggles.

My mom was a residency training coordinator (OBGYN) for 30 years and she wants to let you know she is thinking about you and you can do this. Residency is no small feat, but it will be well worth it when you're at graduation!
Edit: Also, never be afraid to address your concerns with your own residency training coordinator. They are there to help you with personal worries and the feelings you're experiencing right now. They can help you find outside resources or even if you just need someone to vent to.

Absolutely take pride and be passionate. but it's just a job at the end of the day. Leave the criticisms at work. It's great you have good attendings. You may also have crazy neurotic ones. Let them be them if so. And hey, at least you got some BCD lol.

Then I decided I wanted to be a physician...I hated being a chef. Graduated .... now I'm a cardiologist in NY. 3 more years and I can retire...........Looking back none of it caused me as much pain as my wife of 17 yrs asking for a divorce. Think of residency as a data information that you need to know. I'm watching this video and learning about the pathology specialty. All physicians have a broad knowledge base, but as a 1st year resident, you have to know so much! Please don't be overly hard on yourself. Clinical social worker and behavioral health clinician here. It's OK to feel overwhelmed. Please seek some counseling if you need a sounding board. It's OK to ask for help.
