So most likely the oil separator box is so blocked up it's spitting oil into the throttle body that's leaking down into the air intake hose. If you clean the MAF sensor with a special MAF cleaner it might actually still be good. If you don't clean out the oil trap and oil separator box it will ruin the new sensor as well.
A Rural Vermonter I’m a radio nerd and radio hobbyist , I have my Amateur Radio License or HAM radio License as they call it , so my sense of humor came up with that instantly 😂😂. I Always enjoy your content . Keep it up, and have a blessed week
You need to clean the pvc screen and replace the trap. You HAVE to worry about the o2 sensor because that's what the computer uses to help adjust the air/fuel mixture. Those are fussy cars to get to run exactly right and the rudimentary diagnostics do nothing to help that. If I ever buy another I will make sure to find a '93 since it has better diagnostics and a/c system.
Also the alternator not charging until off idle probably isn't abnormal for a Bosch alternator. I think that's the one you can change the brushes on without removing it from the car.
Have you ever worked on the K Jet version of these cars ? Not hard to get it running but almost impossible to get it right 😂 That's why I'm going Microsquirt and COP.

I've just got a deal on a '83 360 5-door. Gonna pick it up this weekend together with a whole bunch of spare parts. Old Volvos are cool. Might order a "Not made in China" plate on the back panel. =)
Love it, the wife bought a $250 1990 volvo 240 in November out of our apartment buildings parking lot. After a lady hit my 1992 awd astro van ... I've been driving the 240 ! The astro van. THAT is a tank in the snow, volvo does okay with aired down tires and weight in the back..... Check the alternator bolt and bracket for that squeal, my bolt had been very very stripped and wouldn't tighten down, with the bushing they have, not being tight made the alternator sit at an angle
Your dedication is impressive , I still can’t help but think how much you’d enjoy a heated shop on days like that . Or just better weather ! You’re hard corpse man !
Ohh man, that K10 was just sending me some signals. "come on, lets go for a rip on a snowy day like this!" Lol, I know Id want to drive that all the time if I had one haha
Although it may not need to pass smog, the 02 sensor provides airfuel burn feedback to the computer, so it needs to work right for the car to run well. Otherwise you'll at best get terrible mileage, at worst it will run like sh*t. And, yes, they are tanks in the snow. Need decent tires & weight in the back. I had a 240 sedan in college in Maine, it would go anywhere, better than a 4x4... Great car, but I upgraded to an XC70
I have a 93 240 sedan, check the crank position sensor. It is on the back of the motor. The harness gets frayed after so many years causes the car to run rough. Mine had the same symptoms.
used to be able to get those mass airflow sensors in the junkyard. a big savings. or even spray clean the one you have there. For years, I carried an extra!
You can clean the old sensor. It's pretty easy but you have to be careful not to be too rough with it and you have to use a cleaner specifically for cleaning the MAFS.
I agree with someone else who commented. change the oil trap, PCV box (big black thing, directly under intake manifold). You have to take the intake off to do it so get a new gasket, and run some carb cleaner through the whole thing to get all that oil out. Some more tips: Get a roll of 1/8 and 1/4 silicone hose and replace every vacuum line you can get your hands on, especially in the cold that old ass rubber is going to be cracking and leaking, which can obviously make it run very lean Also think about a new O2 sensor if you have a code for it, even if you don’t need it to pass emissions it could still help it run better
Great vid! I know you've sold this, but it might be worth cleaning the throttle body with some throttle body cleaner / white spirit if you've not already done so to cure the rough running. I had problems tracing the source of a cold starting problem on my 940 last year with very similar symptoms. I managed to get it sorted but it still ran bad when starting and cleaning the throttle body fixed this.
Be a good car to just tool around in. I actually drive a wagon myself because its a much cheaper option to a pickup truck or suv and still allows me to hual bigger stuff. Im actually surprised with the rear seats folded how much crap I can fit in it. Works great for all my fishing gear and kayaks in the summer as well.
That alternator.... a lot of them (excluding "1 wire" alternators), need a 12v feed to the stator coils before they start generating power. The feed may route back to the ecu to allow the ecu to control the charging current output. If that feed wire is missing/broken, they will often start up from the residual magnetism in the stator, but only above a given engine speed. The real issue is the missing feed so check the wiring or, indeed, the alternator itself.
As to the O2 sensor - this doesn't just help meet emissions standards, it allows the engine to control the fuelling in a closed-loop system. If faulty, the engine will revert to a fall-back open-loop map but that may well have less performance and/or poor fuel economy. If you plan to do any serious miles in the 240, there is an argument for replacing the O2 sensor.
To get it running right : Change as many vacuum hoses as possible Clean tf out of the PCV system (oil in the intake) The MAF is sensible, the 02 too, these sensors are "not expensive" so I say get it fixed. Clean these injectors also ^^ Check the 02 sensor condition
this diagnostic port is a Volvo exclusive and pre OBD 1 SERIES diagnostic and starter fluid kills your MAF sensor , 99% of the time the alternators are just the voltage regulators that got bad, brushes worn out , $20 for a new one, you have an exhaust manifold leak or the down pipe gasket is gone, and i would say you have 1 or 2 vacuum leaks, I have a 1989 240 DL sedan wither 300,000 on it and it starts not plugged in -25/35 below weather here in Manitoba, i keep 5 W 30 oil full synthetic and always make sure my battery posts are clean/ corrosion free and out of all the vehicles you have there at your home this Volvo wagon has the best heat by far and heated seats, the others pale in comparison, great video, too bad you sold it, it would have been the best back up vehicle you could have with a bit of work, almost 40 yrs of owning these and several other cars and these Volvo 240's are still my go to vehicle when the weather is the worst, and super easy to work on 👍
You probably could have got the MAF to function correctly if you had just cleaned it with MAF cleaner. I have to do that every 6 months on my 1994 850 with a fairly new Bosch MAF because oil from the clogged up breather box/PCV gets it dirty. (I don't drive it much any more and I'm not quite ready yet to try to tackle changing the PCV by myself. The last time I had a mechanic do it the PCV was clogged again after 2 years so I don't know if they didn't do it correctly or didn't use Volvo parts.) Volvos run better with the correct parts and not after market parts. That 240 MAF looks very similar to mine. You can remove the MAF itself from the plastic housing for easier cleaning using the 2 torx screws on top that hold it in the housing. Also your OBD1 reader looks just like the one on my 850. It's interesting that you were able to read the codes while the engine was running. All the instructions I've read for using the reader on my 850 say to turn the ignition key to the on position but to not start the engine.
It sounds like it ran better with the old mass airflow sensor. Those Dura last aftermarket parts are horrible as you know. You should use an original mass airflow sensor made by Volvo. Try cleaning your old mass airflow sensor with MAF cleaner. Don’t use brake clean, or gasoline get the real stuff. I’ll bet you there is nothing Wrong with the old mass airflow sensor other than needing to be clean. In my opinion.
Clean flame trap(arrester) otherwise it will pop out all your engine seals. Engine is bady missfiring. Check /replace air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, distr. cap and rotor. Those great B230 engines run forever.
Maf sensor, not great. O2 sensor will invoke lambda behaviour. Doesnt run as nice. For cold weather, the air intake box and heat flap has to work along with the stove pipe ert up to warm the engine quicker. Not having this configured is hard on the maf sensor.

Likely the reason it doesn't start when cold is due to a failed early LH2.4 ECU. Simply replace it with a white label 951 ECU and you'll have no more issues. You can get one for $60 shipped
What happens in the early yellow or pink label ECUs had failed solder joints that would not complete the ground path for the fuel pump relay to kick on. Also the fuel pump relay itself is a common failure.

You need an O2 sensor for more than emissions. The ECU needs it's information to set the fuel mixture. Your mileage will suffer greatly.

The more modern "MAP" approach to EFI is "better" imo. As the throttle position sensor is superior to the simple switch.

The auto parts store gave you an LH3.1 MAF, which ONLY came on select 91-93 manual 240s I think. LH2.4 was ~89-93 for most 240s.
