thank you so much for this, my ap world teacher hasn’t gone over dbqs at all and i have been struggling to teach myself on the dbqs. this video explained the points clearly and helped a lot :) have a wonderful day
Appreciate you taking the time to let me know it was helpful. I'm going to put together another video this week with a PDF document to help organize your notes during the exam so check back. Best of luck to you on the exam!!!!!
SGT PANCAKEFACE i’ve had two teachers this year and the first, everyone went on our phones everyday and she never taught. the new one teaches but not to the ap curriculum :(. so i’ve self studied everything at this point
Former student here (AP World, and Government; Aquinas Class of 2010) to leave my deepest, appreciative kudos for being my teacher so many years ago. You are still an incredible educator skilled in academic facilitation and teaching in an easily understood, no nonsense way. Never change!!
Hey Jennett...one of the best and brightest to graduate from Aquinas. I can't believe you graduated 10 years ago...seems like I had you as a senior just yesterday. Hope everything and well and thanks so much for the kind words. Teaching is usually a thankless profession so a comment like yours means the world to me.
@@JesusHernandez-db5jk I recommend watching heimler history! If you didn’t know about him before. I just drilled his videos in my head. Also look up online ap world review packets, resources, etc!
As a sophomore who has no idea what they’re doing in World History, I can proudly say that your video has made me understand DBQs, and you have taught me more in 12 minutes than my teacher has in 2 months. Thank you greatly for this video and continue being an amazing teacher!!
Thanks so much for this comment. Sorry to hear that your teacher isn't as helpful as you need. Hopefully, my videos will continue to be of assistance. Appreciate you letting me know. Good luck throughout the year!!
@zafir kamdar Good luck. Remember to connect the HIPP back to the content of the document. "Zafir, writing with the purpose of commenting on Mr. Rupertus TH-cam channel, kept his message informal and short."
Thank you! I recently did my first DBQ and got a 3 because I did not do HIPP sourcing. This video cleared things up for me when I was doing corrections!!
Thanks for the video again. Theses DBQ videos really help with understanding how to utilize the documents. If possible, could you also consider making a video where you write a DBQ from scratch? I think this will help a lot of us with structuring considering many of your other videos cover the bases on the rubric and utilizing the documents.
Hello Mr. Rupertus! Awesome to see you doing this. Following because absolutely miss being one of your students. Hope that you know you made such a huge impact on many of us from Aquinas. Drucillia Ralph - class of 09 ☺️✨
Hey Drucillia, Thank you so much for the kind words. You seriously made my day. I have so many positive memories of having you in class at Aquinas. Hope everything is going well!!!
Thank you so so much!! I’ve been having a tough time trying teaching myself how to analyze documents. Question: how can we can we flow the analysis of the doc with how it connects to are thesis? Seems like so much to do in 45 min.
Sophia, Sorry for the delay in responding to this. I believe that 2-3 sentences maximum per document is all you have time for. I encourage my students to never just summarize the document because there is no need for it. Just explain how the document connects to the topic sentences/thesis. Then HIPP the document in another sentence. Don't worry about making it flow. Outside of the complexity point (which no one ever gets) there is no point for having your essay flow. No grammar/style points. It is a lot to do in 45 minutes. Way more than I could have done as a sophomore in high school.
Does the HIPP analysis need to support the thesis? Or is it just need to relate to the argument? I don't understand what it means when my teacher said "tie it back to the argument"
@@Yula-j7i Correct. Use the documents to prove your topic sentence/thesis. And then explain the HIPP of the document. If you do that well, you will ace the exam
The document needs to connect back to your thesis. The HIPP explains how what is in the document is influenced by Historical context, intended audience, etc. But no, the HIPP sentences doesn't have to connect back to your thesis.
@@Aaron-fe2ih That is correct. Use the document to prove your thesis (1-2 sentences) and then another sentence to HIPP it but that HIPP sentence doesn't have to be relevant to the thesis. Needs to be relevant to the doucment
@@jasonrupertus3360 I'm just gonna stick with historical, for example, in the apwh sample 2020, During this time, Imperialism, a foreign influence brought into places for raw materials, brought resistance to many countries. This also created document 1 because it shows a resistant in the Ashanti empire against the british
No. This video was made before Covid struck. You'll get 5 documents and have to correctly HIPP 2 of them. If you try and HIPP all 5 and two are correctly done and 3 are not, you'll still get the point.
Kevin, don’t describe the documents, say how it supports your thesis. You HIPP in a paragraph that you’re using documents. You could be saying how a British official Is supporting your statement but keep in mind he is Pro British and will speak highly of his nation/organization.
SGT Pancakeface (can't believe I just typed that) is totally right. 1-2 sentences showing how the document supports your thesis/topic sentence and then another sentence for the HIPP. You could combine it into one sentence but at this point in the game I would separate it.

Thanks for this my APUSH final which is a DBQ is today and I suck at HIPP
Good luck and hope the video helps

im still kind of confused on how to use HIPP. How am i supposed to get so much information from a few sentences?
the AP test is in 40 minutes💀💀
2 1/2 hours - starts at 2pm eastern time
So we have to choose between historical context, Audience, ... To source the document
That is correct. Could do Historical context for Doc 1 and then Intended Aud for Doc 2, etc. All up to you. Could also just do purpose.
This is perfect
