- Dig into the construction of the Taj Mahal, a mausoleum that Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan had built for his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

It’s 1631. Mumtaz Mahal, beloved wife of Emperor Shah Jahan, is giving birth to their 14th child. A healthy girl is born, but Mumtaz dies soon after. Sobbing uncontrollably, the emperor decides to build a tomb worthy of his queen: a replica of paradise to embody their love and project the power of the Mughal Empire for all time. Stephanie Honchell Smith details the construction of the Taj Mahal.

It's so sad that it used to be so much more beautiful than it is today. The inlay of jewels, the gold- it was stripped by thieves over time, so we can only imagine how it used to look when it was first built.

Bharat , AKA India is full of such and even more beautiful structures made way before Taj , They say 1 life is just not enough to explore it , but if one could understand the thought behind the creation it's clear y and who may have made them .( Ajanta , ellora , and many more)

This is my first time learning about the history of it. It just goes to show that people would construct monuments and go the distance for those they love. Don't ever lower your standards or settle for anything less than what you deserve.

Yes, but it came at the cost of the entire empire and directly led to 400 years of decline for India. As an emperor Shah Jahan's first responsibility was to his people. Instead he used public funds to build a monument (for which he raised tax rates on top of depleting the royal treasury). Sure a lot of employment was also created in the process but it wasn't necessarily economically sound. And he lost his throne at the end in large part because of it. And his son proceeded to run the empire into the ground by waging and losing further wars. All this ultimately culminating in a weakened empire over the next century and half, with a very large, economically weak, cash stripped empire, which allowed the British Empire to take over, completely changing India's destiny into utter ruin, a path that it only now is slowly emerging out of. So whatever the sentiment of love may be, and however great the monument may it, it is important to not romanticise it to this extent, but also look at the broader picture of the consequences.
@top tube I'm specifically talking about Shah Jahan and the ones that came after. Aurangzeb was that last great Mughal ruler, and a big part of the reason for their decline can be traced back to Shah Jahan and the Taj Mahal. I'm not saying anything about the Mughals before that. There were good ones and bad ones, just like there are good and bad rulers anywhere in the world.
I am from the city where Mumtaz mahal died, initially the Taj Mahal had to built in burhanpur. But due to logistics and porous nature of soil near the river of tapti, it shifted to Agra

There are actually many anomalies in the generally accepted storyline of Taj fed to the public. The truth is something else entirely.
Taj is overated go to South India cities like Nellore and see 2500 year old temples so perfectly designed and standing today the encarvings , comparing it with aTaj i would say is an insult to it its that for some reason our media only show Taj Mahal which is a monument of hipocrisy nothing less as that very Shah Jahan married his own daughter after mMumtaz's death

I think it's safe to say the Taj Mahal is one of the most recognizable pieces of architecture to this day, so the Shah definitely succeeded in preserving his and his wife's love for all time.
In the last decade, there was huge industrial growth nearby Taj Mahal, and the huge amount of sulfur and nitric gases are released in the atmosphere by industries. These gases mixed with rain cause acid rain... The white marble is turning to pale yellow due to this. It's called marble cancer

I saw it in 2012 and it truly was magnificent but even then, early in the morning as the sun rose you could see the haze of pollution in the sky, altering the clarity and pristine beauty of the Taj Mahal. I could well imagine it against a bright blue sky being even more beautiful.

This was so beautiful I want to cry. I think it’s interesting to note that in Islam we believe the dead can hear you speak when you’re near their grave, so Shah designed the Taj Mahal to make sure Mumtaz was able to hear the recitation of Quran, hence the design that enhances echoing.

@@vikaspatel-fj4kj im not a political observer, but as a former architect i can say that building a structure carved out og stone is much more difficult than marble. But Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I prefer to see the skills behind it more than the overall aesthetic.
I have seen the Taj few years back. It’s probably the most beautiful man made thing you can see. I was fortunate to see the Taj under moon lights for a little while and it’s beyond words to describe.

Hihi... I'm surprised how no Hindooo has invaded your comment section yet telling you that TAJ Mahal at Akbarabad and Notre dam Cathedral at Paris both are Hindoo temple that were "stolen" by Mughal and French.
The animation and the Narration was so superb that I was transported to Agra, staring at the Taj mahal glimmering in the moonlight with its divine reflection on the central pool.
I have visited Taj Mahal two times and It's magnificent , can't imagine how beautiful it looked before the Acid rain and British looting it's gems .

Looting of the jewels began almost as soon as the building was completed. Apparently there is evidence that Shah Jehan's son removed many. The area was also invaded several times, and each group of invaders removed jewels, gold and silver.
The British also removed some, but it should also be noted that without the extensive restoration of the Taj by the British, it is possible that it may not have survived. Certainly one governor thought the building in such a bad state, it would be better to recycle the marble.

the Marble is and was very strong and nowehre throughout the history was it mentioned in such a bad condition except by a single ruling people - The Brits . There were concerns because of it's land but never it's structure which goes to show the bias of the brits and them showing themselves as the saviours of the poor indians

You forgot to mention one really cool thing. Notice those four towers surrounding the main building? They're actually leaning outward just a pinch. That's not an accident; they were DESIGNED leaning outward. Why? Because if an earthquake were to suddenly strike, those four towers would collapse outward, ensuring that the main building wouldn't be damaged by them!

It’s both. Shah Jahan did love Mumtaz Mahal greatly, or at least preferred her above other wives. Polygamy was common with Mughal (and Chinese) Emperors. It was after all expected for the Emperor to have many children.

.....The Taj Mahal: A monument to eternal love! Interesting!! Eternal love for Mumtazmahal, the queen who was married to Shahjahan for some 18years and had 14 children. She also died due to difficult pregnancy. And yes, Shah married her sister 3months after her death. He had at least seven wives, Mumtaz was the fourth. Long last the eternal love!
She was probably his favorite wife if he wanted to build a monument like that for her.

I know this is from another country but in Filipino, "Mahal" means love or expensive. This is why when I first learned about Taj Mahal's existence when I was a kid, as a young one, I naively thought that the marvelous building is beloved because it's expensive to build it.

Ted Ed posted a video, so I shared my naivety when I was just a little boy regarding this topic.
For foreigners who might be confused why some Indians are abusing their own monuments- it's a Hindu-Muslim thing. Communal tensions have arisen due to our corrupt Hindu ' nationalistic' media, who sometimes spread hateful and unhistorical stories

The inlay work of stones is precious to observe. The craftsmanship of all the people involved in the making of the Taj is not to be taken lightly.
Also, there are literally about twenty facts, or features of the Taj, that you should know which makes the construction of Taj an even greater achievement.
I don't think it's only about aesthetics or beauty of the monument that make it so important. The history, the craftsmanship all make it so important.

I would love if you could make a video animation about some of the most most beautiful architectural sites -t the south Indian temples made during the reign of Pandavas cholas and the kakatiya representing hindu culture. They are some fascinating temples some cut into stone with with almost perfect symmetry and the direction in which it is built is also taken care(according to cultural customs) I am sure many will love the idea of spreading the devotion our kings had towards their gods.

There is a popular rumor that Shah Jahan ordered for all the builders who worked on the Taj Mahal to have their eyes plucked out and their hands severed so that they could never gaze upon anything so beautiful as the Taj Mahal again, or build anything to rival its grandeur. Established fact proves he had done no such thing as among the many skilled laborers he employed to build his grand mausoleum were architects and craftsmen that came from Turkey, and Jahan wasn't willing to upset relations with the Ottoman Empire. Plus as stated in this video, some of the men he contracted to work on the Taj he kept for maintenance and repairs.
