What is a crown lengthening and when is it necessary?

If once removed the affected part the remaining tooth structure is enough, it could be restored and conserved.
First it is necessary to do the root canal treatment in case that the pulp is affected. After that, part of the bone around the tooth is removed to leave more tooth structure exposed above the bone and gum.
A pin is placed inside the tooth in case that more retention is needed to hold the crown. Finally, the tooth is prepared for cementing the crown to it.
If the distance between the bone and the teeth contact points is less or equal to 5 mm, the gum will recover its original position.

I have a few questions as I was suggested to have this done if you have the time to answer. So in this case where there's decay, is an implant honestly just the better route to go problems wise? Also what are the long term effects of losing some of that bone? My dentist said i will always have a gap near my tooth after this, why is that?

It depends on the amount of bone that needs to be removed, if it’s too much then maybe the implant would be a better solution. The bone is the part that will hold the gum in place, if the bone is lost, a gap can be created
