    Thanks ... glad I hung out till the end, as had set the AF to fast/responsive, but don't really do vids much or use monitor, and the touch tracking is one I could have used recently. Vid'ing a bird, and as I panned with it's movement, focus was on & off the bird as camera picked up something closer. Good stuff as always. THANKS.

    wow. one of the best videos on this topic. I am usually pretty good at filming my workouts but for some reason I kept messing up and didn't get the best footage. I was out of focus and the background was. hard focusing on self with no one helping behind camera. anyways. I like the idea of face tracking and especially the idea of touch tracking. ill touch track the weights im using before I walk in frame and see if that works. thanks again!!!

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comments PunchNugget and it all depends on if your face is in the frame or not. By default the Sony cameras will focus on whatever is closest to the camera unless it sees a face. Then the face will override unless you turn off facial recognition priority for autofocus. Tracking the weights should work great depending on your angle of course, but if your face is in the scene the camera should automatically track that if you have the Focus area set to wide or zone in particular... All the best, Jay

    Auto Tracking explained at last!
    How to set auto tracking in video has been driving me nuts. I've looked everywhere on the web to understand why in video there's no "Tracking Expand Flexible Spot"; the main reason I got the a6400.
    From this explainer I guess it's just in Photo mode. And in video, I have to use the auto tracking mode. Why it's not available in video is one of the many quirks of the a6400... but at least I have a working solution! Thank you!

      Glad it was helpful and I totally hear ya! It's certainly is a lot to think about, but once you truly understand the fundamentals you can break each situation down and adapt the camera for capture as needed. In addition, making mistakes is one of the best ways to learn and grow. I have missed lots of shots over the years, and those memories help me not repeat those mistakes. The more you do it the better you get, you know the deal ;) Thanks for the comments and best of luck out there my friend, Jay

    Wow Jason, you laid it all out! I'll buy an A6400 or 6600 tomorrow to shoot myself piano/singing from the corner of my tiny music studio. I use Logic Pro X for audio, Godox UL150 for spotlight and FCPX for post. I look directly across the piano into the camera [6' or 7'].The area covered is about 4' high x 8' wide with only a foot remaining behind myself and the corner I'm wedged into. I don't shoot stills and the camera will never leave the stand. Q1]. Can I control on/off/record from the Sony remote app on an Ipad and seated for back/back takes? 2]. What lens for a wide angle art approach and some 'bokeh' as well, prime or an all round zoom? I watch repeatedly and appreciate your wealth of generosity. Cheers and HNY from Vancouver!

    This was a excellent video... Explained things that others did not. I don't quite understand why you need the filter to reduce the s/s speed?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks and when recording video there is a full that the shutter speed should be double the recording frame rate. So for example if I am recording at 4k/24p then I would want a shutter speed double 24 which works out to ~1/50sec. To maintain 1/50 of a second in bright conditions with a large aperture lens will often require an ND filter. Basically sunglasses for the lens, otherwise your shutter speed will be to fast and cause a more jittery movie...

    7:36 - THAT'S EXACTLY the problem I've been looking for someone to comment on. That focus pump. You're not talking about it but I'm curious about your thoughts on that. How do you avoid that? I notice it on flat surfaces of single tone. Like a wall, or something that takes up a considerable amount of screen real estate, like you demonstrated. Yes, darker environments also bugs out the auto focus, but I'm generally speaking about shooting a lit scene. That artifact looks distracting. Trying to get rid of it in post doesn't really work. Any thoughts?

  • @KarleyHall

    Hey! Thanks so much for this video. I have made it my 2022 goal to really step up my video quality on my channel. I have a Sony A6400 and clearly am not using it to its full potential. I was about to give up on it before I saw this video. I switched up my settings, based on your recommendations, and they improved most of my issues. But, I am still hung up on this weird bounce that I get. It seems like my background is always bouncing and it makes me a little nauseous when I watch my clips back. Any idea what could be causing this?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly not really... It's not supposed to happen, but it is for some people, especially when using the 16-50mm kit lens. You can mess with your focus area by making it smaller and change AF sensitivities to less which should help. Also, you can stop down the aperture to like f/5.6 which will increase the depth of field and should trigger the focus less also. I honestly do not know if this is an issue with the lens or camera, because another subscriber had this issue with the 16-50mm kit lens, but another with the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Lens which is what use all the time and have never had the problem... Strange for sure.

    This is a great video! I usually demo tennis strokes and right on a board behind me. Don't really want a bokeh. Any tips for settings then? DO I still need aperture prioroty? Thanks!

      You would need to raise the aperture to a higher number in order to make more of the scene sharp. Maybe try f/8

    Great video Jay - I really like the clips with the bike and your kids, did you use a gimble to get it so smooth or is this handheld. The close up shot of the forks with the wheel is sooo good, I can’t figure out how you did that, where your running or driving alongside the bike as it was moving?

      Thanks Robin ;) I was using a stabilization gimbal and running along side my daughter as she was riding pretty slow. I was riding the mountain bike with one hand and the other had the gimbal recording down by the fork. It was pretty easy to get honestly.

    Really really great explanation, really appreciate your work! Btw, can you explain the focus mode as well? Like automatic focus, continuous focus, etc.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sam, in video mode you can only use Continuous Autofocus (AF-C) or Manual Auto focus (MF).

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well you have Focus Mode and Focus Area. Focus mode is what we already talked about. Focus area, is the area on the sensor that will be used for autofocus. So basically you can "limit" the area that the autofocus uses which often times make it easier depending on what you are trying to focus on. If you check out some of my beginners guides I explain it while going thru the settings on the camera. See here for the A7C as an example: th-cam.com/video/S0TqJQe2pfw/w-d-xo.html

    This was by far the most informative video I have seen on the matter. Congratulations and thank you, you just got a new follower.
    I have a question about the nd filter and the shutter speed. Can you please clarify why you need an nd filter when you can set your shutter speed to 1/50 on the camera?
    Also is there a logic behind 1/50 for 4k?
    Thank you

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome, thank you! The purpose of the ND filter as it pertains to shutter speed is when you are trying to use a really fast aperture like F/1.4 for example. If you have a super fast f/1.4 aperture in reasonable bright lighting, you will not be able to lower the shutter speed to 1/50sec without over exposing. The shutter speed would be more like 1/200sec for example at that aperture. The ND filter will allow you to slow the shutter down by making it darker in front of the lens. This is great for those fast aperture lenses in brighter conditions. 1/50sec is used when recording @ 24p in either 1080 or 4k. If you are recording at 1080/60p you would want 1/120sec shutter speed, and if you are recording at 120p you would want 1/240sec shutter speed. For video you want to double the recording frame rate when it comes to shutter speed. That is best practice for natural looking footage. Otherwise if the shutter was faster, the footage will look a bit choppy when filming moving subjects. The 1/50sec shutter speed adds that little bit of motion blur on moving subjects which is what our eye is used to seeing in the real world. Be sure to check out this tutorial as well: th-cam.com/video/lt2Kp-2mCHA/w-d-xo.html
