We had the brilliant idea to go truck camping alone in the hottest desert on Earth during the hottest time of the year. The Dasht-e-Lut in Iran also known as the Lut Desert holds the world record for the hottest surface temperature ever recorded, estimated by Nasa at 80.8°C or (177° F)
Everyone has advised us not to go, from locals to 4x4 guides, nobody goes to the Lut desert during Summer but they limit to visit the Kalouts in the northern part just by short dawn trips to se the sunrise then come back to town; the risk of bad weather, sandstorms, car breakdowns and heat strokes and dehydration is too high
It’s recommended to visit the lut desert at least with two self-sufficient vehicles, a Satellite communication device and a guide.
We carefully planned our route and had plenty of provisions and water, still we had to turn around due to bad weather, we ended up in a sandstorm and we cracked our windscreen…
This is an episode not to be missed!
