My late mother had this same computer in the 90s I remember how simple it was as a kid it was a fantastic design at the time for a all in one I love how it’s designed you don’t need a tower like the pcs at the time
My friend’s parents had a Performa 5200 and I remember about the same. I could not believe how cool it was that they had managed to build the whole computer into the screen! I have one now, finally. And although it’s getting close to 30 years old, and technology today has come lightyears ahead in sophistication, I still find it faschinating and beautiful.
I've got the original VHS tape of this highly informative video … so hilarious from today's point of view. Not to mention the amazing acting skills on display here :-D
For being a 68K machine I am surprised that it shipped with 7.5.1. Seeing the Smiling MacOS faces didnt debut until 7.5.1 on the 6200 Performas. I also was surprised to see an Apple Design Keyboard as standard instead of the Apple ADB II Keyboard.
People must have been a lot more patient in 1995, because no one in 2023 would sit through a nearly 25 minute video just to learn how to set up a computer.
I love this. Background music at the start sounds like they're about to enter a kung fu fight scene. The dialogue in the kitchen is how a normal family talks to each other.
"OH no, we can't have an extension cord running through the floor". "Now we moved it" - 3:37 shows them having an extension cord running through the floor and under a door frame...
It's possible "dad" was used to using MS-DOS computers (or Unix or VAX) and knew all the commands and could even code in his sleep. But he might have never used a GUI like in MacOS, so this brand new enviroment befuddled him.
I have an APPLE Macintosh color classic, 575 performa just like this one and a Black Macintosh TV. And they all this work. So Apple did make computer at one point with quality parts and they where designed easy to use and fix. Tool less fix and upgrade of components. The Macs where ahead of there time and definitely the “Innovators” in Silicon Valley.
There was something about having a family shared computer that was cool. You all left your mark with the customisation. And you could see each other's high scores (I'm looking at you Maelstrom).
Aa a person born in 2005 looking. Maybe i don't understand but look like 1990s computer weren't made for performance and gaming but simplicity so normal people could understand them
"Does that prevent screen burn in?".... how the heck do you know what screen burn in is when you can barely turn on the computer yourself? LOL nobody was this dense when they first got their first computer. LOL
This was a big problem when TVs were left on when the station went to test pattern, as well as when used with some early home computers and video consoles. Later CRT televisions were a bit more resistant to burn in vs their earlier counterparts due to using better phosphors in the display but it could still happen. Monochrome computer monitors really had a problem with burn in, because they typically had a piece of software displayed on them with a few unchanging elements that would be on there all day, every day. I'm sure "dad" saw quite a few ATM machines and office computers with this problem.
Apple were in the shitter at this point. Really the OS didn't advance much until OSX, which was massively different to the previous Mac OS. I still think the Windows taskbar is superior for multitasking
The Classic Mac OS also uses the Motorola 68K traps for the operating system routines. When the Macs switches to PowerPC, the operating system kernel had all Critical routines written with 68K assembly, which require a kernel mode emulator to handle the difference. It was an huge bottleneck in terms of stability comparable to the Old Windows 3.x requiring the DOS kernel for Critical operations.
Then click on that dialog box asking for a password, then wait for the wait cursor, then dismiss the error message about incorrect permissions, then hunt down your list of known passwords, which don't seem to work anymore, then reset your password using your email or phone, which may or may not work, then dismiss the beeping house alarm indicating your internet is down and you apparently can't do anything computer related unless you're connected, then reset your modem and router, then wait some more, then get back online to discover some updates occurred in the background without your PERMISSION, then find out the program you were trying to use has been updated and no longer works properly, then spend the next day and a half downgrading and troubleshooting, And, all you wanted to do was open a file (which might contain a virus) and print it. Technology is not assisting man kind, but controlling it, and eventually when we are no longer necessary or relevant to our robot overlords, we will be made obsolete...No upgrade path for the human race :)
I have to flip my phone upside down to watch this vid from a proper Christian Northern hemisphere perspective. It doesn’t help with the accents though. I can’t understand a word they are saying! Bloody hell!

I used computers (in my case, a Mac) for school before the Internet. Trust me, they were still very useful. Certainly word processing (and to a smaller extent, desktop publishing) was the main use. But I also created a major project using HyperCard.
Why do these videos in the 90s always make people look like complete idiots? People weren’t stupid. They figured things out after a few minutes. The dad acts like in 1995, he’s never seen a computer. So how did the little preteen with a dann too much to say, figure things out so fast? God, those where dark times.

Surely by age 40, this guy has understood the concept of warranties. I accept he may not know much about computers, but warranties?
