It will stay popular for a while and may even grow further, but it can't live on in its present state. This is why Melee HD needs to happen. Whether imperfect or not, we need a rebalancing of the game, an attempt to balance at the least. Melee is becoming samey. The only saving grace for the game is it's unique engine and means of engagement in its gameplay, it is unrivaled how high the skill cieling is in this game still to this day. But seeing the same characters will grow boring, Fox will be too big of a threat, and Smash 4 won't be able to hold out attention for long as it attempts to fill that void of diversity. Nintendo aren't going to address this either and it pisses me off to say that, but we know it's true. Maybe PM will make a comeback, maybe Sakurai will go against his better judgement and release a rebalanced Melee on the virtual console, but I'm not holding out. As far as competition is concerned, Smash brothers is going to continue to have a shaky and unnatural affiliation with the atmosphere.
