Soft-spoken and gentle. Blatty is the Bob Ross of the supernatural

Legion was so thought provoking. I was shocked how good it is. One of my favorite books!

Well, William Friedkin died today...William Peter Blatty died in 2017, but I'm guessing Friedkin never appeared on Letterman, so this interview is the next best thing.
The book Blatty's promoting, Legion, became The Exorcist III, which he himself directed in 1990. The studio wanted it to be tied into The Exorcist mythology to make it more marketable, so they forced Blatty to include an exorcism scene at the end, which in retrospect feels very forced and removed from the rest of the story. Still an underrated horror film with great performances from George C. Scott, Jason Miller and Brad Dourif.
    RIP to both Williams.

Technically he directed Exorcist III in 1989. It was released in 1990.

I think the studio helped him. I’ve seen both versions and the one released in 90’ is better. The directors cut works as a book but makes for a very anti-climatic end.
