How To Make an INCREDIBLE Wooden Bluetooth Speaker | Woodworking | Electronics

In this video I make an incredible wooden Bluetooth Speaker. It's powered with simple electronics and a 10000mAh USB power bank. This gives the speaker 4x the battery life of a UE Boom!

As many parts of the speaker are made from wood as possible, including the speaker grills and volume knob. See the links above for the full supplies list and build plans.
Note that you will probably also need to wire up the USB D+ and D- lines for USB charging to work. The data lines are used by modern USB chargers (including fast chargers) to query the USB power bank about what type of charging it supports. I initially tested charging with an old USB charger for which just the 5V and GND wires were enough to make it work. After the video was released, I tried charging with newer USB chargers and discovered charging wasn't working. Easily resolved by wiring up the data wires too!

I did try with voice over videos but it was my "no talking" videos that have been much more successful and received positive comments about the video format. So figured I would keep going with that format, since they seemed to be better received by a general audience.

Wow 😮 great looking speaker, the natural wood finish looks 👌great. Would love to try a wood bending project soon, can you go much thicker and still bend okay?
Thanks! Glad you like it. You can kerf bend wood at any thickness, the main consideration is how deep the slots are cut. In this build, there was about 1.5mm material left below each slot which worked out ok.

Correct - no ground loop noise. All conductors are of suitable size and there is only one power source.
10:19 What was the point of the blue terminal block? Wouldn't it have been just as easy to solder the switch wires to the perfboard?
It means the perfboard can easily be removed from the back panel and flipped over for servicing if required. Or to be replaced by another circuit if ever required. Also, I intentionally made all of the electronics modular in case I ever wanted to upgrade to higher power audio. But yes, if you were keeping costs to a minimum, you could solder the power switch wires directly into the perfboard.

Аккуратно и красиво. Одно не понятно - на кой ты во внутрь павербанк запихал??? еще и не закрепленным. Ну сделал бы на холдерах - прикрутил холдеры к корпусу, плата заряда на скотч или клей. И вуаля - ничего не гремит!
Thank you for your comment. My original plan was to mount the power bank, but since the USB cable was quite rigid it held the power bank in place. But I do agree, securing the power bank would be a good upgrade!
very nice look and build! but does it sound, compared to, for example, jbl flip?
Thanks! I can only compare to a UE Boom 3, and to my ear, this speaker sounds better. I'm no audiophile, but I would describe the sound as richer and warmer. More than enough volume too. It would also be easy to upgrade to more expensive electronics and speakers. I kept the electronics basic to make it easy for anyone without electronics experience to complete the build.
Great man hows the bass sound.if you could add a woofer or something for the extra bass punch.but over all it looks great man
The bass is OK, actually quite good for cost effective electronics and speakers. At some stage I will upgrade the electronics and try to add more bass then. But for now I'm happy with the sound quality and use the speaker almost daily. Thanks for your comment!

9:16 How did you decide on 82 ohms? Was that just trial and error?
It was trial and error but I got reasonably close on the first attempt. I tried 120 ohms to start with which didn't work, then tried 82 ohms which did work. 100 ohms didn't work either so settled on 82 ohms. I suspect 82 ohms will work with most USB power banks. The additional current draw isn't an issue since the power bank has such a high capacity at 10000mAh. Another option would be to replace the resistor with a small circuit to drive a power LED mounted on the back panel. The current draw would still need to be about 60mA however to match the current draw of the 82 ohm resistor, i.e. I = V/R = 5/82 = 61mA.

Thank you 🙂 It's Beech which has been thermally modified (steam treated) to bring out the dark color. It's a cheaper alternative to using more expensive dark wood such as Walnut.

Not much at all really, about $40 for the electronics and I had the wood already. Lets say $10 for the wood.
