    How good are these guys? The fun & energy in this is infectious. This was done during quarantine so none of the guys were even together. The editing of this was great & was done in the Tik Tok style. Love all the guys parts, with Tim's rumbling bass underlying it all. And Adam's beatboxing is phenomenal as always including castanets. Amazing how he increased the tempo from one song to another.

  • @joshsouders4175

    So interesting fun fact about Adam’s castanet sound is that he’s doing a technique called triple-tonguing. Basically with the tongue saying ta-ka-ta making this fast triplet sound. This is a common technique among brass players and it just so happens that Adam has his degree in trumpet performance. For more examples of triple-tonguing check out Wynton Marsalis playing “The Carnival of Venice” and you’ll hear some great techniques!

    • @JeffOfTheMountains
      @JeffOfTheMountains 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brass player in school band, and can confirm the triple-tonguing. It's definitely a technique we use to hit triplet notes in a single beat, and it's reasonably difficult to pull off. Takes lots of practice, but it can be done.

    That amazing "clacking" sound created by Adam is the sound of "castanets" which are literally small hand-carved pieces of wood....2 castanet pieces are held in each hand clicking together as Spanish "Flamingo Dancers" whirled around the floor...Think castanets were/are also very popular with dancers in certain regions of South America.

I don't believe they've ever done anything half heartedly and it shows. I have so much love and respect for these guys both as musicians and human beings. This was another of their creations that delivered. So much joyful fun. Great reaction, as usual. You picked up Adam's castanets! Many don't!! Adam has had his beat lab in his home for a while where he records his percussion most of the time. During the pandemic, the rest of the guys got recording equipment and software so they could record their parts and their producer, Darren Rust, (the guys call him the 6th member of Home Free) can engage with their software and produce from the studio. That's how they worked their magic during the pandemic.

    From what the guys have said of their recording processes at home they all have their own little booths at home. Also, they all have the same mic. That was something their sound engineer insisted on. I'm unsure exactly what brand it is, but I know it's a modeling mic, so they can use different software to achieve different effects for each type of vocals they need. Because Tim is going to need a different mic type than Adam Rupp, who's going to need a different type from Adam Chance ( depending on weather or not he's singing baratennor or bass ), who's going to need a different type than Rob...

    Adam Rupp's VP is indeed among the very best in the world. Three things really stand him out from the many talented VP's. First he has developed an arsenal of more refined sounds that I have heard from any other VP. Second, He uses percussive sounds that truly fit the needs of the song. (Many VP's try to cram every technique in their tool bag into every song.) AND MOST IMPORTANTLY....I have come to believe he is a human metronome! (Many otherwise very good VP's lose the tempo which is their primary job!) As a percussionist, I applaud his talents on all of these!!!!

    As amazing as they were BEFORE their Quarantine series (and EP) I truly believe that the exercise in separate recordings combined made them MORE conscious of how their arrangements went together. I'm sure that they (before) worked sounds and harmonies out together in the studio and developed with their EARS... and (after) were forced to use their MIND to develop their sound. They also took that time to work independently on their OWN projects (Tim, Austin, and Chance especially) and that brought even MORE experience to their mix when they finally got back together.
    While I was a HUGE Home Fry before and thought that they were amazing, since the Quarantine series I have noticed a much deeper feel to their sound. It's great to see how a group that constantly gets to practice their craft can grow.

    Adam Chance goes by Chance. He is the first one to sing. This group is by far the best A Capella groups. Castanets is what you are trying to say. They all bought the same equipment to use. That is why it sounds like they are together while recording.

    some of his sounds, I have no clue, but the castanets he's basically just using double-tonguing technique like you see in trombone and other brass instruments. Alternating the front and back of the tongue with a tah-kah type thing

    Ok, here is a brain dump of my understanding of Home Free’s recording process. Sorry it’s so long.
    Before the pandemic they recorded their vocals at Darren Rust’s studio in Minnesota; Adam recorded the vocal percussion at home even then. Based on some of their comments over the years, it seems that often multiple guys would record the lead vocals and then they decide as a group whose voice is most suited to the song. Rob (and Chris) live in Minnesota too so their parts frequently got recorded first and then the other guys would fly in to record their tracks.
    Obviously the pandemic made that routine impossible so there was some scrambling to get Austin, Tim and Chance appropriate microphones and software so Home Free could continue putting out music videos financed by their Patrons, basically keeping them employed when they couldn’t tour (I believe Rob continued to record at Darren’s studio.) The software gave Darren the ability to remotely control the recording so he worked with each one individually to get their tracks. Austin already had the beginnings of a studio at his house where he and Tim did their recording; Chance recorded in his closet. Then their video editor would guide them through the footage he wanted which the guys filmed (often multiple times) and sent to him. They said that filming their own video was a lot of work.
    Even though they can travel now they still record their vocals remotely with their quarantine set up. However their videos are back to being filmed by professional videographers with all of the guys in the same place.
