- In this video I'll be restoring a Georgian folding tea table. The process went horribly wrong when I was staining the top - Furniture restoration at the sharp end!!
The moral of the story is - Never stain wood if you are colour blind!!! It can result in a nightmare when restoring furniture!
Your apprentice is going to be a heartbreaker in a decade or so. It’s always encouraging to see the next generation getting involved in restoration.

@@RhooseRestorations It hasn't where I live. Georgian in particular, is phenomenally expensive here. That table would easily sell for $1000, probably more.

When do you determine it is appropriate to sand a piece?
I’ve seen people who seem to be experts of restoring and they never sand- only scrape, strip, and repair. Then I’ve seen other people who also seem to be experts of repair/refinish go full-on sanding.
I think the answer is don't sand unless you have to. I prefer to scrape, strip and sand in that order. Sanding can remove the bumps and scrapes of a lifetime and make things look as new. You can also sand straight through veneer very quickly. Scraping is great on smaller pieces but after a certain size it's impractical. You mostly end with a very light sand but not to remove any finish.
The red was not offensive Mahogany is expected to be red anyway.
That's true but the rest of the table was much less red, so it looked a bit out of keeping. Thanks for watching.
