So exciting to be embarking on this amazing selection of books with AO. I've been using AO for a few years and we love it. I just wanted to mention and encourage you to trust the narration process and NOT ask questions such as WHO, WHERE, WHEN ... and to have more open ended questions for discussions ... "what do you think of his decision?", "would have done anything differently?", " do you agree with what he did/said?" These type of questions, over time, promote such good discussions, and in Charlotte Mason's view, are more interesting to the child than to know who, or when things happened. Keep up the great work and enjoy these delectable books! 💕
I’ve been searching endless hours on TH-cam for something just like this, like you ! Thank you for the details & tid bits and most of all for being to the point. I appreciate you
Awesome! So glad you loved that idea! To download them remember to search for bookmarks on the AO Facebook group and search for the year you’re looking for. Another amazing AO mom made those so I can’t take the credit for them. ❤️
One way that almost guarantees that we use our timelines is to get them out during morning time. If they are handy and visible, one of us will say, "Let's add that to our timelines!" I try to limit the time so we aren't held up for too long, but sometimes we really enjoy visiting them and as we see our events and historical figures, we all tend to narrate and feel like we are on memory lane.
Good morning, watching a few more of your videos, they are great!! Where did you print the bookmarks from, and the timeline printable? We are on year 2. :)
Hi Liv! Thanks for the love! I got the bookmarks from the Ambleside Online Facebook Group. If you search the group for "Year___ bookmarks" or something along those lines, you'll find the links to download the different years of bookmarks. For the Timeline printable, here's a link to different ones we've used: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Bj04uiHeZL7GJnrJOZaWzFEIxO1Mo-8c?usp=sharing
I’m just starting AO year one with my oldest and I’m not clear on the timeline part. What is the timeline you showed, did you buy that or make it? How does my child make entries when he doesn’t read or write yet?
Thanks for this walk through! I went back and forth back and forth with doing AO...but I really want to do history family style and not have several different years going. So now looking into A Gentle Feast or Simply Charlotte Mason. BUT! Several of the great literary selections from AO will definitely be making their way into our morning basket over the years!:) So glad to watch as this works for other families! The joy of homeschool!:)
I can definitely understand the need to combine the kiddos for some subjects. I’ve essentially combined my YR0 for most things this year only because his school day is very light and he generally wants to be around us while I do school with my YR1. Naturally he listens in on History because of that. But I will note that the nature of how these books were chosen makes for some really amazing connections interwoven throughout all the subjects. I think that’s my main reason for separating my kiddos into their own years. I feel like I might be robbing them of those opportunities for things to click. Hopefully it’s not too hard on me to keep them separate. We’ll see. Sounds like a good subject to broach in another YT video when the time comes, lol.
Just found your videos and love them. My son is almost 5 and I’m preparing for year 1 the following year! I found the bookmarks, but I’m wondering what I would type in AO page for the monarch images you have on the little ring. Thanks so much!
I’m having a hard time finding it now as well. I did find this one however: web.archive.org/web/20210720052558/www.cidadevirtual.pt/poge/kings/index.html If I come across it though I’ll be sure to link it up for you or tell you how to find it.
This was 3 years ago. But how are narration’s going now? If you haven’t already read Know and Tell you should check it out and see how you really don’t need to ask all those questions especially for a year 1.
Yes there is! I downloaded them directly off of the files section within Ambleside Online Facebook Group. Once you’re a part of the group simply type bookmarks in the search function with that group and you’ll come across many years already made.
I was going to go with simply charlotte mason but I just can't get all that worked out in time and would be so expensive for both my boys and I don't want to rush into it all since I'm new to homeschooling pretty much and new charlotte mason so now I am going to do ambleside it just makes more sense and it's free and has a primer for year 1 I need . I also hear ambleside is better for those higher years and I have a 1st and 6th grader . Where did you find the bookmarks ,? Now I'm going to binge watch all your videos while I clean up the schoolroom and set it up for charlotte mason from just summer time madness.
I looked into Simply Charlotte Mason as well at the very beginning and I absolutely live their TH-cam Channel. In the end I decided that Ambleside Online would work best for my family. It was a beautiful and enriching year and I’m going head first into our 2nd year using it without any hesitation. I hope it is the same for you or even better! I found the bookmarks on the Ambleside Online Facebook group. Just type “bookmarks” into the search bar for the group and you’ll be sure to see them there for multiple years. I went ahead and downloaded all the years and saved them to my computer already. Thanks for watching my videos!! I love that I’m able to help you and other mamas out there. If there’s anything that needs clarification for you or that’ll a video you wish I’d make, let me know so that I can start working on it. 🙂
These videos are so great. I have watched several this morning, thanks! Love the way you have organized your materials. I will be starting Y1 in the fall and needed something like this. Have you posted your schedule yet? I don’t think I’ve found that video yet.
Thank you so much! No I haven’t posted that video just yet. It’s on the docket though. I hope to have that video up soon since I’ll be going through them in an evaluation portfolio video I hope to have next week.
Unfortunately I can’t link directly to those bookmarks. However if you join the AO Facebook group you’ll be able to search for them quite easily just by typing “bookmark” into the search group function.
I didn’t make them so you won’t find them under my name. In the search bar at the top of the group page type “yr 1 bookmark” and you’ll see that someone just recently located the years1-3 bookmarks and organized them into downloadable links for everyone. “Lesley Manning” is the great gal that did the organizing. You can search her name and you’ll see those bookmarks along with a slew of super helpful things she has also made and shared. Hope this is helpful!
I have a friend who is in year 6 and she doesn’t use all the books... do you use all the books? I plan to do year 4 with my kiddo next year and it is a lot of books
In Year 1, we are using all the books however Yr 1 has less books than the older years. There are many families that start with the curriculum and as they progress start to tailor it to their needs. The great thing is that most if not all the books are available for free online so you can preread and decide if a book may not be a good fit for your family. I would encourage you to try and fit all the books in the first term at least and see how your child takes to them. These books were all chosen very thoughtfully and allow for many connections to be made between each other.

@@thisisme_cristi Awesome! Thank yo mu so much.
That 50 Famous Stories Retold sounds really good! It's great to hear how car-schooling has been a great part of your history homeschool routine.
Thanks! It’s definitely been an aid on days when we’re trying to make the most of our time and fit in all of the things, lol.
