War is part of the human condition. Unless everyone is trying to live the gospel, you enjoy peace only because someone is doing violence on your behalf.

Thank you. I hate war. But if you don't sweat in peace time, you bleed in war time. Always be prepared. I couldn't understand this when I was a civilian,( because I'm not the brightest bulb in the box.) but once I served in the Marines and part of our training was learning history and what our fore fathers wanted. And they believed God showed them what to do. And so do I. So again I say . Hate war . But always be prepared for it.

Not only is the Book of Mormon not racist, it actually goes counter to the view that many racists have. Racists have often felt that being white made on superior to those who were dark skin or black. The story of the Book of Mormon contradicts it. Sometimes whites are righteous and sometimes they are not. Some times dark skin people are righteous and sometimes they are not. God does not play favorites regarding skin color but whether they are righteous. The Book of Mormon ends with the dark skin people destroying the white skin people. Kind of an odd ending if one views white skin being superior to dark skin. A racist would not write that kind of ending. Its clear teaching is God does not care about skin color, which is something that people fixate on.

"And now, behold, it came to pass that the people of Nephi did wax strong, and did multiply exceedingly fast, and became an exceedingly fair and delightsome people."

"There were no robbers, nor murderers, neither were there Lamanites, nor any manner of -ites; but they were in one, the children of Christ, and heirs to the kingdom of God."
      4 Nephi 1:17
You cannot have a functional, peaceful, or moral society with dark skinned people in it. The BoM is very clear on this even if you want to pretend it isn't.

2 Nephi 26:33 has literally nothing to do with my point. Yes, EVERYONE is invited to come to Christ and repent, however that doesn't change the fact that the BoM is clear that functional civilization is impossible with different races. The Nephites did their best during their entire history keeping the dark skinned Lamanites OUT of their lands.

I would politely disagree. I believe that the BoM isn't racist in ANY way. If God was ONLY merciful, then yes, this would be racist, but God isn't solely Merciful. He is ALSO Just. God is a God of mercy and justice. certain punishments and actions must come to pass. God NEVER does something without reason. Each and every descision he makes is the GREATEST choice he can make in each and every situation, or else he would be denied his divinity and would cease to be God.
The Book of Mormon is as racist as you make it. If you believe in the God of the BoM, then it isn't racist. If you don't, then... Yeah.
Stating that a group of people were cursed with black skin isn't racist. A statement that a yard is dry and lacking color may be interpreted as being discriminatory, but you're telling the truth, either way. It is how you CHOOSE to interpret it that determines how racist it is.

Verhoeven's ST fails as satire as the humans are 100% justified in killing bugs, despite his dressing the humans in Hugo Boss, and despite war being sad. There was no option for peaceful coexistence.
The BoM makes explicit that people are cursed when they choose to reject God, regardless of skin colour and they will mark themselves and become identifiable. You can see the truth of this today.

I've always wondered if the descriptions in the book of mormon referred more to their cultural appearance versus more of a race type thing. It just doesnt really make sense since they all came from similar blood lines. For example, when I moved to a new town a friend knew right away my brother and I were LDS just by the way we looked. Lamanite culture involved drinking blood and sustaining themselves primarily on hunting. While Nephites were more of crop growers and fort and home builders. Am I mistaken?

    • @RecoveringUGrad

The term skin of blackness is actually a Hebrew idiom that has nothing to do with skin pigment. The contemporaries of Lehi used similar language in the Bible.
Actually you need to understand ancient Hebrew culture and how they used color for symbolism.
Isaiah 1: 18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
White obviously is symbolic here and represents purity. Even those caucasians we call White today aren’t really white unless you are an albino. If you are white, hold your hand to a book with white pages.
These Old Testament phrase translated in our English as "Blackness" is actually a Hebrew idiom meaning gloomy. The authors of these verses would have been contemporaries of Lehi's Family.
Nahum 2:10 She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of thjem all gather blackness.
Jeremiah 8:21 For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.
Joel 2:6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.
Even today we have idioms or words with this same type of idea. "Why aren't you looking blue" and even the word melancholy has its origin (according to Oxford): "Middle English: from Old French melancolie, via late Latin from Greek melankholia, from melas, melan- 'black' + kholē 'bile', an excess of which was formerly believed to cause depression"
