Hi, former Raytheon here. Internally we also all thought the marketing guy who came up with "Ghost Eye" was an idiot. In fact, one of the Chief Engineers made a whole PowerPoint presentation (which he presented TO the program staff) mocking the new name when it was made official. An absolute Chad through and through.
That bit about seeing Hawk as Jericho in Iron Man is the same way I feel as a former flight engineer every time I see people in movies just holding a casual conversation with no background noise inside a military aircraft, particularly rotary wing.
as a former nuclear type, my favorite peeve in the movies is to hear: "The reactor's gone critical!" and watch needles and dials move into a red area clearly marked "CRITICAL" in Second Coming Size capital letters. me: wow... just... no.
@@EchelonBlue I understand the basics of nuclear reactions and love Kyle Hill’s videos, but I’m not exactly super well versed. The critical reactors make me roll my eyes so hard that I nearly give myself a concussion. Hollywood has had decades to learn that critical = steady state.
😂 always found that hilarious, considering I grew up and my babysitter often did Flight for life across the state, so I spent more time in the air before 12 than some adults and not one time was it EVER quiet enough to even hear each other across the seat and that was civilian craft.😂
Dude… You could do hour long vids and 99.99999989898989% of folks would still be here and watch ever fking second of it. Roll on HLC! Killer work you’re doing here man.!
No doubt. He pretty much _has_ to now due to getting overwhelming response he's got just from these two videos. I can't believe that he thought he'd have to split it up into two parts. Well, he definitely got an unrelenting level of support for the idea so let's hope he keeps 'em coming.
I think I speak for everybody when I say we need more. Make this a whole series! Go into more depth on every historical system. I know there's probably a solid hour on just the M42 Duster alone!
Many years ago I was managing development of a radar collection system for the USAF that analyzed radars pulse by pulse so you could develop countermeasures against them. I contacted the Patriot office trying to set up a test where we collected the radars and then compared our collection against what they actually radiated. The Army told us to pound sand, so I went to the Navy who was very happy for us to go against Aegis. We showed them what we collected, and they impressed us on how difficult it would be to effectively jam that system. They learned what the state-of-the-art systems could learn about the SPY-1 radar which helped them design counter-countermeasures.
Listen HLC... you need to not worry about making these short. I have zero experience with Air Defense, but things that go whoosh, zoom, boom are cool. From "most" of us here, you can totally go long form with these and we would watch.
I sometimes forget you're not just the "Funny faces on planes and maps" guy and actually are a very important part of running and advancing our air defense capabilities 😂
The "Strikers with lazer beams on their freaking heads" had me dying. Love this content HLC. I would 100% be ok with you combining both of these videos into one but then again you got two ads out of these so, keep doing you!
As a very old and retired Air Defender, I do appreciate your work. I have worked in Hawk, Nike Herc and Patriot, and I still think there is nothing sexier that watching that launcher raise up a Nike Herc. Keep up the good work. And too bad they moved the School out of Ft. Bliss. Used to be great duty.
R2-D2 with Anger Management problems… My dogs want to growl at you for that. I was prepping their dinners and you dropped that line. My laughter knocked ALL of their food back into the container and their bowls onto their heads. Good video, thanks for the laughs.
When he mentioned the system like that it immediately reminded me of the clip of one of those things tracking something it REALLY shouldn't have in that "you have no idea" kind of way that bordered insanity.
I'm a retired Army Combat Engineer. Due to injury, I spent my last two years of active duty at the Corps of Engineers District office in Tulsa. Ft. Sill, being part of our area, I worked on the launch site range for the CRAM there at Ft. Sill. Very impressive system.
My first time at Ft Hood there was a HAWK battery on the west end of Motorpool rd. If you drove by it faster than 50mph the damn things would track you. My mom wasn't impressed when I did it with her in the car. Lmao
I grew up on Kwajalein Missile Range and we had a Nike Zeus missile monument right next to our base softball fields. Enjoying these videos and the info you've provided.
We went to the Air and Space Museum in Huntsville. They still have one. Unfortunately that salt corrosion on Kwajalein lead to the missile having to be taken down.
I remember a few guys who'd gone to Linebacker units, back when that was a thing. That was also back when the Army thought putting a different weapon in the M2/3 turret would solve ALL the problems. I was mildly surprised the Army didn't try to make a DIVADS using the M2/3 FOV. Stingers were fun. We got some training in the Ft Polk Stinger Dome back in the 90s. Biggest video game I ever played.
Wasn't the Linebacker what they used in the battle for 73 Easting in Desert Storm?? 2 Bradly went out to find the friendly company that they lost touch with from a bad Sand Storm, but they found a full Iraq unit and the Bradly's toasted the Iraqi unit..... Gotta love it when a APC trashes a battle tank like T-72....

Its kind of funny because I played a game in the 2000s (Command and Conquer Generals) where the US faction had Avengers that used lasers to shoot things down and now here 20 years later lasers are being used in air defense.

Not wanting to spend time in a dead-end job, and seeing the similar handwriting on the wall with Nike Herc, I trained in the HAWK system. There is a famous (in the eng/math/cs world) guy named Claude Shannon who was a professor at MIT. During WWII he and a bunch of other engineers at Bell Labs started work on the first electro-mechanical guided AA. He also invented a bunch of tech for the information age. Its covered in a book called "A Mind at Play." (fun fact: he was one of the first people to try to cheat Vegas by sneaking in a machine!)
To be fair to the Ironman movie, the thing that was special about the "Jericho" was not the missile itself, but the payload. Especially for a first demonstration it would make a lot of sense to take an existing system, in this case the hawk system, and just swap the payload and make relatively basic alterations to guidance controls so it goes off at the desired location and speed to deploy that payload. Same reason there are so many wild variants of 12 gauge ammo. It's there and it works, so if you are gonna do something funky that lets you not worry about the other bits.
Excellent video! I knew a lot of guys that worked on the Nike, and some of the places they got assigned were pretty awesome. Lots of those sites were miles away from any other installations, and in areas most wouldn't expect to find a missile site. I learned a lot about ADA history in these two videos. OH, and I remember when the Sergeant York was thrown into the dustbin of failed Good Idea Fairy concepts. You gave the highlight, but that program was seriously flawed from the start. Odd, because the same period saw us bring out the Abrams, Bradley, Apache and other cool shit. The York seemed to be the turd in the litter box of the early 80s.

Great video! I just watched parts 1 and 2. Love the History stuff.
Love this, as a Navy VLS guy i would love to see something on the essm, SM2, 3, or 6.
LOVED this video “series?” I think it still would have worked had you just done 1 longer video, but you knocked it out of the park.
Short and to the point is cool, but hearing someone geek about about something they love would get me watching hours of you vids 👍
Great job, HLC - thanks!
