The US has S-300 in our possession for full exploitation and forecasted upgrade exploitation, just like we did with MiG-29 and Su-27. S-300 performance is great against Russian and Ukrainian aircraft, if you don’t mind the IFF not working. Russia shot down 4 of their own aircraft in one day recently, including another Su-35, which has their latest and greatest avionics in any of their operational fighters. Israelis, US, and UK have been defeating S-300s over Syria for years now. S-400 is meant for ballistic missile defense and bombers primarily.

    • @LRRPFco52
      @LRRPFco52 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The “jammers” on all F-35s are the AESA Radars. The F-35’s AESA has high-capability to jam other Radars. As soon as the USMC started getting operational squadron F-35Bs, they retired their EA-6B prowlers, after the F-35B pilots took as many lessons they could from the Prowler community. Also notice that the USAF did not replace the EF-111A with a new offensive EW platform because the F-22A was coming online. There was a brief gap where the USAF relied on USN EA-6Bs during the war in Yugoslavia, which were not able to fly the night the F-117A was shot down.
F-35s have more EW capability than legacy EW platforms because they can’t be detected until within visual range basically, meaning trey can bring their jamming arrays within very close distances to threat emitters. A Stealth jamming aircraft is a very insidious combination, especially when that aircraft can also deliver precision munitions and share networked sensor-fused data about all the threats it sees with other F-35s. Additionally, F-35s bring a new cyber-attack capability that has not existed before.

@@showtime1004 Any 4th Gen platform that can carry decoy missiles and employ them against IADS can confuse S300 and S400, although S-400 is meant for long range intercepts of incoming ICBMs and bombers. S-300 is more of a tactical system for intercepting fighters and cruise missiles. The US was employing decoy missiles from fighters in Desert Storm over 32 years ago, and now has given them to Ukraine. Ukrainian Su-24s have been upgraded to carry the Storm Shadow missile, so when these 2 types of systems are used together (decoy missiles and Storm Shadow), S-300 is screwed.

Phased arrays are not going anywhere. there are so many ways that electronic beam steering is so much vastly better than mechanical I never see mechanical ever dominating the radar scene again.(with the possible exception of long range and relatively low resolution search radar. Those will still probably be a big rotating "hyperbolic parabaloid" (That is what they called the shape and said it is saddle like. I disagree, it does not look like a saddle. Just look for a large and fairly slowly rotating shaped kind of like a smooshed oval that has been bent forward on both ends, that is a hyperbolic paraboloid. Anyway for long range radar I suspect those aren't going anywhere . Also the aegis system used to (I don't know it it still does) hand off from the phased array to a conventional mechanical track radar when actually firing a missile at a target. I was not a aegis guy but I suspect that this was due to technical issues with trying to keep the hard continuous beam on the object that you are trying to shoot down and the super neato 360 view of the battlespace at the same time using the system as it was designed.
Incidentally when you watch movies where the pilot hears a solid buzzing or long beeping noise and starts getting excited yelling about "SAM Inbound" or something like that. It is his electronics warfare package has detected a continuous beam on them which means that you are either being painted by or for a missile. Either way break hard and fast or you are going to be confetti in a couple of seconds. You can also hear this in the famous footage from a F 16 that dodged 6 Iraqi sams over the course of as many minutes. You can hear that as well as hear what a pilot really sounds like when he is dodging for his life under high G forces. Including a very impressive "OH SHHHHI..." that is cut off as you see his G force indicater rocket past 6 Gs and his afterburner indicator light up. It turns out that you can't really scream at 6 Gs. Still 6 sams dodged. That speaks well of both the pilot and the plane.

14:21 To be honest, I feel like the United States is doing a pretty damned good job of asserting its position at the top of the food chain with what we’ve been letting the Ukrainians play around with, as well as the capabilities we’ve been giving them the means to manufacture on their own. With them getting a single patriot system, I genuinely feel like it’s going to make China take a whole other step back in their plans for Taiwan, just as the beginning of the Ukrainian war did.

It's something that I love to push into Z-shithead's faces:
Ukraine has received a wild mishmash of NATO hand-me-downs, some decade old systems like the Gepard, some top shelf stuff like the Patriot and a whole metric shitton of stuff in bewteen.
And every single piece of equippement performed above and beyond expectations.
The Gepard, for instance, works great to shoot down Shahed drones, making it exceptionally cheap to shoot down these drones... and the Gepard is ancient by modern standards.
The Patriot system swats Kinzhals from the sky like it was nothing, and that's only a small number of systems, not even the most modern ones or the full range of available missile types.
Modern NATO artillery is fucking up anything close to the frontline, anything further away is getting turned into swiss cheese by HIMARS and the Storm Shadow has taught the Russians that the Dildo of Consequences won't be lubed up before use.
Ukraine receives small numbers of, for lack of a better word, basic weapon systems, some fancy stuff like ATACMS are still off the table _and Russia is getting its ass kicked seven ways from sunday with just that._
Meanwhile, every single Russian wonder weapon was a giant nothingburger. A far cry from similar Western systems.
The US is supporting Ukraine with unfathomable amounts of ammo, weapons, supplies on a monthly basis and the US hasn't even had to enter war-time production to keep up with the demands. Just think about how _scary_ that is to its enemies: The USA has not yet even begun to play serious, and is already delivering enough stuff to Ukraine to slap Russia's shit rather devisively.

It's always nice to hear from someone who knows what they are talking about. One thing I think is important to keep in mind when reading specs of these systems (especially for those of us just reading stuff online without professional experience to put this into context) is that most 'specs' are not as simple as a single number. A radar system's range for example: there's a difference between detecting the existence of an object and getting a lock on it. Stealth doesn't need to prevent detection to prevent targeting. Similarly, RCS depends on frequency of radar used etc. Even assuming Russia's published figures are accurate (which is a pretty big assumption) there's not enough nuance in the headline figures to simulate an engagement.

Aside from the fratricide incidents, it had about a 50/50 success rate against the Scuds that Iraq fired (single missile average success rates, obviously we can fire more than one to improve the odds, and we did). The issue with applying that spotty record to today is that was Patriot PAC-1, which has about as much in common with the current PAC-3 and PAC-2 GEM+ families as S-400 has with S-300.
The reputation issue has also been exacerbated by the fact the Saudis have been the most prolific user of the system since Desert Storm, and they had a couple of high-profile failures with the system: one where an interceptor missile circled and killed civilians, and the other where 6 full Patriot batteries didn't even detect, never mind engage, the incoming drones and cruise missiles that struck their oil facilities. The system involved the use of “frequency hopping” amongst radio waves, with both transmitter and receiver hopping to new frequencies together. Doing so prevented the interception of the radio waves, thereby allowing the torpedo to find its intended target. After its creation, Lamarr and Antheil sought a patent and military support for the invention. While awarded U.S. Patent No. 2,292,387 in August of 1942

PAC-2 is really more of an anti-aircraft missile with upgrades, software, and sensors that give it some anti-ballistic missile capabilities. But it will always be limited because the missile body itself it wasn’t built to intercept missiles. That’s why the PAC-3 was designed. It is much smaller, faster, and more maneuverable than the PAC-2 missile, and was designed from the ground up to intercept ballistic missiles. And it has been a stunning success in its first real action in Ukraine (the Saudis only had PAC-2). I suspect that the collaboration between Israel and the US on David’s Sling, etc. also involved the design of the PAC-3.

One of the key advantages the Aegis system has over literally every other air defense system is CEC (Cooperative Enagement Capability), which creates a science fiction level synthetic holistic picture of the battlespace that can tie together multiple *non fire control quality tracks* into a consolidated data point that *is* a fire control grade track... and then pass that data so that *any* CEC equipped Aegis platform can fire the mission just as accurately as any other platform - even if the firing platform has exactly *no* visibility on the target.
And no, this isnt the same as lofting a laser guided weapon over a hill and having it pick up the spot being lased by the snake eaters on the other side. The launching platform is guiding the weapon to the target the entire time with a level of fidelity high enough for a skin on skin intercept - they've literally just "outsourced" the tracking, and by combining the probable errors in non-fire control radar pictures until they have a small enough error to act as a fire control radar, fire the mission without ever turning on a fire control radar...
Just the open source data on CEC gives away the creepy scary capabilites of the system. What i wrote above was just a simplification of the unclassified, "Distro A" Death by PowerPoint "CEC 101" the CEC program has for incoming interns and secretaries (the classified stuff, aside from drawings and software to actually build the hardware and make it work, is mostly about hard numbers like max number of target tracks, etc.)

CEC is only the missile control aspect of that capability. The actual networking side where multiple tracks are amalgamated is just part of the base Aegis system's capabilities; it gets that info through Link-16. But yes, this is a capability we definitely have, and are working on improving - the USN's goal is to eventually be able to hit any target with any missile, from any platform, cued by any sensor in the inventory.

Also: I thought Ukraine having a wild hodgepodge of air-defense systems would be bad, now I wonder if that's actually a good thing, cause it means Ukraine will be able to have a well-layered defense system in places. Or in other words: The number of different systems is good, the low numbers of those individual systems, on the other hand, is bad, cause it means Ukraine can't put up an umbrella across their entire territory.

Fun Fact: the first phased array Radar systems were built by Germany. Based on trials of directional radio communications, done bei Karl Ferdinand Braun in 1905, the GEMA built the FuMG 41/42 "Mammut" (Mammoth). It could steer its beam 60° in any direction electronically. It was also a combination of multiple existing smaller radar units, making it one of the few examples of efficient design and production in wartime Germany. Until after the war the British and Americans didn't believe such a system could be realised at the time and were totally gobsmacked when they got to stealing and reverse engineering it.
Interestingly enough Luis Walter Alvarez used electronic beam steering to develop a radio landing guidance system for the USAF during WW2. But he didn't think of using it for airspace control and targeting.

Because at the end of the day, what wins battles is two things: practical experience in the field and traditions. The Royal Navy, after defeating the French at Trafalgar, built a tradition of being the uncontested master of the waves that wasn't broken until World War One and Jutlands failiure to defeat the High Seas Fleet, and when World War Two left them bankrupt. The Chinese have never had a modern steel Navy capable of blue water operations, unlike the U.S. Navy, which built ours in the late 1800s. With respect to experience, we have been involved with major fleet engagements with steel ships at the same time, 1898, with the Spanish American War, and especially in World War Two. This becomes important when considering Flattops and Submarines. Beating the shit out of the Japanese with both weapons systems gave us important operational experience, which we still use to this day, while a nation like China with no practical experience has a much more difficult time, because of a lack of institutional knoledge.

I suspect we will someday see the army get loyal wingman type drones and add them to the air defense system. A big part of these missiles is packing enough fuel onboard to get them up to speed and altitude fast. If they were already at 40,000 ft, you just get the plane point in the direction of the target and now it has a big chunk of the altitude and energy needed to intercept.
You can't do this well with manned aircraft because people get tired, and they don't like staying in a known location. Drones don't care if they work a 50-hour shift and are in constant threat of being shot down.
This would also be great for extending sensor coverage and extending the system quickly to different areas.
You can't replace ground based missiles completely with lottering systems, but they could definitely help the logistics of air defenses in some environments
