Thermostat wiring for the oil furnace

  • This one covers the limitations of thermostat wiring that can be done with the oil furnace primary control. This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
    If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.

    Hi,
    Even though this video was created 8 years ago, it was a true blessing for me this morning. I have been caring for a Wayne oil burner using a stack control identical to your model. He got no response from an older mercury vertical thermostat that has been in use for over 50 years. Just yesterday when finally needed heat , I turned up the temperature and heard the familiar click, but there was no response from the burner. In a very tight compartment, I slid back to where the stack switch was; reset the red button with no response.
    I forgot how to properly reset the step on the lever that protrudes into the chimney stack although I was able to press it in slightly. I pulled up on the transformer that is is the upper left corner in desperation and Behold the burner came on and I could hear and feel the rumbling and heat in the chimney pipe. I was pleased to confirm I had fuel and ignition, but as soon as I released the the little solenoid on that transformer,
    the burner quit. If I lifted it again, the burner fired just as before. Not being willing to stand all night holding that relay, I went to bed with a chilly house, determined to research stack controls.
    Your video was the perfect answer to my quick prayer for some help!
    Your presentation was clear, very thorough and showed me what I had clumsily accomplished the previous night
    I think now I need to check if I am getting power at the thermostat W and B connection and also if the contacts on the relay are not corroded. This unit is in a seasonal camp and is used very little except for chilly mornings and now when the weather is turning and CC we will soon leave it be till next May.
    Thank you so much for your contribution to help those who are DIYers
    May God richly bless you and all your families.

    I will be doing a vid on that wiring when I get time. The other choice is to buy a cad cell relay that comes with a larger transformer that is made to be used with either a/c or a thermostat that needs a C. Something like the Honeywell R8184M1051. Hope this helps.

    GREAT videos - I have learned a great deal, thank you! I find myself in exactly the same situation as aflaroc with a need to rewire my system (same as your second gray box description but it has only four terminals) and anxiously awaiting your instructions on how to do it! Hope you get a chance to do it soon! Again, thanks for all your efforts!

    I'll bet money that Duracell and Energizer hold stock in the major thermostat companies. Unless you have a "heat only" situation, you've got a 5 wire going to that baby. Why batteries? To save the program in an outage? The program is lost more to dead batteries. I've been to so many calls where the t-stat was brightly lit and partially functioning even though the batteries were bad. Thanks for the awesome vids btw.

    Good to see the pictures of the controls. However, the title of the video, "Thermostat wiring for the oil furnace" does not show wiring to the thermostat! I was hoping to see something that would let me look at my unit and determine if the thermostat was wired correctly.

    Hello,
    I have a Williams Oil-O-Matic Fuel Oil Furnace that I am guessing is from 1960 something. It has a Stack Relay and a Fan Limit control. I added a 2 ton Heat Pump and am uncertain about how to energize the fan for cooling or heat pump heating?
    I have a single speed blower that provides about 800 cfm. I understand I can install a relay between the thermostat's call for heating and the stack relay to isolate the fuel oil heating cycle from other functions.
    I also understand I could use a fan center which has it's own relay. The fan center N.O. and N.C terminals usually get connected to different speeds of a motor, one speed for heating and one for cooling. But I have one speed so I'm confused on how to energize the fan without over lapping the controls. Plus I have a heat pump so its one speed for three purposes.

    Hi GFM, I can use a little help here. The Riello 40 in my garage furnace quit firing, motor runs, ignition spark is audible, but no fire happens. I tried cleaning the cad and replaced the oil valve solenoid, but still no fire. Last time it did this a few years ago, I replaced the rectangular switching relay part number 7020004 and it worked. Now I can't find a replacement, as it seems to be discontinued. I ran across a thread where they said a Honeywell R182C can be used to replace the Riello switching relay. Please share your thoughts on this.
    Thanks

    Wondering some video's show removing a jumper between terminals R and RC on some thermostats like a Honeywell RTH6580WF WiFi thermostat so a 2 wire heat system could be connected to terminals R and W. Additional transformer to power this thermostat would be connected to terminals C and RC. Should that work my oil furnace but think the power from the Honeywell R8184G 1005 oil furnace primary control is like more than 24 volts ?

    • @grayfurnaceman
      @grayfurnaceman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want an electronic thermostat, you must use a battery operated one with your primary control. The power from the primary will not operate an electronic thermostat.

    I just replace the old style Honeywell thermostat with the mercury inside that had a heat anticipator which worked great until I tried cleaning it. I replaced it with the Honeywell Home RTH111B Non-Programmable Thermostat. The problem is when it reaches the set point by the time the furnace cools down it is 8 degrees above set point. I checked voltage coming into the thermostat and I'm getting 8.4 volts, thermostat looks like it needs between 20 - 30 volts. Should the furnace be putting out 24 volts? It worked with the old thermostat until I wrecked it by trying to clean it.

    • @grayfurnaceman
      @grayfurnaceman  ปีที่แล้ว

      That thermostat should work with any low voltage. Have you covered the hole in the wall behind the thermostat?
      GFM

    • @John-Deere
      @John-Deere ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grayfurnaceman The hole is only large enough to pull the wires through. It's mounted on a small board in my garage. I had the thermostat wires hooked to R&W. then R&B, with that the burner wouldn't shut off. With it on R&W the burner shut off at set temperature, but by the time the fan shut off the temperature was 8 degrees warmer than set point. I thought about moving the thermostat to another wall. It's on the opposite side wall as the furnace, about 20 feet away.

    Hello, I have the same 2 wires from my oil burner (labeled T1 and T2 in this case) and I'm wondering where exactly they are to be connected to my new thermostat? No need for the common wire as the thermostat has batteries as you mentioned. It is a Honeywell RTH2510/RTH2410 series thermostat. The inputs are: B, O, G, Y, W/AUX, R jumped with RC.
    Thanks so much

    Both Controls, the White Rodgers 8A85A-101 and the honeywell R8184G have their own 24V transformers.
