Stripping an APS Smart-UPS 3000 Transformer

  • I had to dispose of an APC Smart-UPS 3000, a 3KVA uninterruptible power supply which consists of a tin box, about 16KG of lead acid batteries, 1.KG of circuit board and two transformers weighing 6.5KG each. Not a good idea to dispose of whole, so I took it down to the major bits.
Here I see how long it takes to strip the transformer even more.

It does, though it is not a good time of year tp be selling copper. Took a while though. I suspect I can get that time down.

That was interesting Ben - I think even if I had decided to strip the transformers to scrap them (the reality is, that I'd probably keep them, just in case I ever needed them!!!!), once I'd exposed all that lovely copper wire and sheet, I'd have wanted to keep that, just in case it was useful one day!!!! I REALLY should find out where my local scrap metal place is and take a few loads!!!!

Much better to take it there than the dump, they pay you for it! Mind you, you do need ID and they have to pay bank to bank.

    Hello Ben,
I have been doing some micro scrapping myself... It fills some quiet moments in the workshop... See you next time...
    Take care.

I have a wire stripper machine and it’s made me a lot of money.I also have a lot of electric motors to scrap but it’s too much work to take them apart.

Some real nice copper wire in there but I ain't got time take them appart normally just chuck them in and get paid as motors for them. In conclusion your right not worth the hassle. 👍

I really enjoyed your pain. Of course you could have stripped it in 3 mins by cutting one end off and punching through the copper, but what’s the fun in that, and you doubled your money not just an extra quid. Nice one Ben
