A very interesting format. It will reward depth of character knowledge and effectively eliminate Sherlock/Yennenga/Medusa/Bigfoot I feel like. Not a chance I ever do anything but pick those 4 at the beginning… but that isn’t that bad of a thing to shake up the format
It's a lot of fun! Players tend to have their go-to first round picks. Often they are looking to ban things out at that point. Then depending on how both players go about that it opens up tons of interesting options to play nearly any character!
This is confusing. You call it Best of 2. But it's actually just 2 games, right? "best of" typically is used with odd numbers and means the person wins the majority. Like in best of 3, you have to win 2. I think the rule is we play 2 games no matter what the outcomes are. In which case, it's not "best of" it's just 2 games. Is that right or am I missing something?
This format looks really interesting, can't wait to try it out with my friends! Just wanted to ask, do you know where to find images of the card backs? Since I figure to do this format it would be nice to print out two copies of each character card.
I would suggest looking on unmatched.cards for the images. Even if you can't get the card backs, you could do a hero card or any of the cards from the deck. Hope you enjoy the format!
I like the more balanced approach… I hope it doesn’t feel like some Ladder seasons where YOU HAVE to pick a certain fighter just to ban. 100% pick/ban rate is too high. I definitely want to see stats on the pick/bans. I’m excited for it!
I suspect it could feel like those ladder seasons, but it's really going to differ based on your opponent's preferences. So we'll have to wait and see! Though sadly I don't know that we will be collecting the pick/ban stats because Frank is very busy and also it could be very tedious for the players to keep track and enter it all.
Looks good, I'm kind of surprised to see how crazy (not a bad thing) you went with it compared to mine haha since you never liked how RNG my format was. With Arsenal, you can't guarantee your fighter against ANY of the opponent's fighters, on top of blind picks means it's going to be a clown fiesta. A fun fiesta though. Random question, what made you take out the "ban 1 fighter" after you have your roster?
Haha we just figured that you have the ability to "ban" fighters during the pick phase essentially. So it seemed unnecessary. It definitely could be a clown Fiesta haha and I'm not a big fan of RNG. But a lot of people wanted more RNG actually, so we're giving it a shot. If it goes well, we will probably do 1 Arsenal and 1 Conquest tourney per year.
I could do a stream for sure. I don't have time for a video anytime soon as I gotta work on the tourney announcement video and then matchup of the month. Though I might do gameplay videos of my tourney matches as well which will be using Arsenal.

While they are very common to be picked first, it's not guaranteed. If everyone is expected to pick them then there is opportunity to exploit that predictability. Especially with Houdini and Genie out, and I imagine it will get more and more difficult as we get more fighters released.
So to block top 3 would need to run a risk of playing them. Interesting, since I'm relatively new to the game and tournaments I feel like I haven't played as top characters that much but played against them a lot so might need to practice to play as them just in case.
i really want to get started with online unmatched but it seems like an impossible task to get vorpal board set up, is there any online tools for learning how to use vorpal? i tried it in the past but i couldn’t find any way to set it up. can anyone help?
We have the fighters and maps saved that we give out for tournaments. There is a different folder for iOS and for Android, so choose whichever phone operating system you use. Basically you download the Vorpal Board app on your phone and download the files from the folders to your PC. Then transfer the downloaded files into your phone's storage folder for Vorpal Board. Then when you go on the play.vorpal website and open up a room, also open up the app on your phone and enter the provided room and code from your PC to connect. Once you're connected you add the components into the room using the phone app. It sounds complicated at first, but it's pretty simple once you get it set up. There are instructions in the folders provided as well. Hi! One question: I'm trying out some of the vol 2 legends, but find really hard to win with Yennenga vs Bigfoot. Its raw power overwhelms me, and having 5 feints makes me lose some of my revives and double attacks. Also Jackalope, it can oneshot my archers with its scheme pretty easily. Saw in your tierlist that you said Yennen goes even or winning in pretty much every matchup but Mary and Simbad. Which strat should I take against bigfoot? Thanks ^^
Hi! So the Bigfoot matchup is not super Yennenga favored, but perhaps slightly. The main thing you want to do is take out Jackalope before he can get his 3 horns off. Everything Jackalope defends with is something Bigfoot won't have. And they only have 14 defenses total vs Yen who has 16. Overall as Yennenga you want to just out-value Bigfoot in the long game. Run him out of defenses/cards and win. You have more HP, more defenses, more auto damage, and some discard effects to make your value game even stronger. Every time your surprise volley or rain of arrows goes un-cancelled, that's extra HP or card value/damage you're getting. And even if cancelled you're trading 1-1. They can't all be cancelled. Try to attack with your archer divide and conquers just to waste defenses, and defend with pin the prey so that they waste an attack PLUS their discard. Put Yennenga up front early to take a hit or 2 and disperse the damage to archers leaving them at 1hp then put them up front after that to block and make Bigfoot waste extra cards on them. Bigfoot is stuck in a rhythm of maneuver>attack, while you should aim to do attack>maneuver. Slowly chipping away at his defenses/HP to get the upper hand. In the long run he should just gas out. Save skirmish and jaws for defense to protect against those big attacks like the log and savagery. Sorry for the wall of text haha. Hope this helps!

I want to learn as much as possible from the best players, and a wall of text is perfect :D I may have to practice that matchup more, because even though I can outdamage in the long run, if I'm unlucky with the card draw, Yenne doesn't have much draw, so I find myself undefended in some situations + bigfoot can really put pressure with those 3 movement + free card draw + boosting (and also its 5 movement cards). @@amaggixz that's what I like to hear! Usually the way Bigfoot wins is by aggressive play and getting those undefended hits. But with so many versatile in deck that's hard for Yennenga to run out. Bigfoot's ability is what allows him to play that way, but remember if Jackalope is dead and Bigfoot has to be the one approaching, then he likely isn't able to draw from his ability 😉

Yes, not necessarily specific to this format, but we are going to try using a timer for the upcoming Summer of Legends tournament. Basically it is a delay-style chess clock. 5 minutes per player with a 1 minute delay (you have 1 minute each turn to think before your overall time starts depleting). Pause for combat interactions and anything else that requires a decision to be made on the opponent's turn. If your time runs out then you lose that game. Full details will be included in the official tournament rules as well.
I don't know much about unmatched, other than how to play. Just wondering if there is a format that plays best of 2 that requires the players to swap their fighters in the second game? In case of a tie, the player that had more health left wins. That way you can play with any 2 fighters, and the game should be perfectly balanced.
And the tournament could be organized in such a way that every player plays against every other player. For each win you get 20 points +1 for each HP left. Most points at the end wins the tournament.
That would be a very balanced way to play. We have not ran any tournaments like that because often times players prefer variety in matchups rather than playing the same matchup from opposite sides.
Oh ok, that's a fair point. On the other hand, it seems like players will tend to gravitate towards the same characters if they are able to pick. Using the method I described you can have randomly selected characters and maps for every game. So it might actually generate more variety overall?
@@stefan_nikolic well player expression is a big factor too, because players practice with their favorites often times and want to be able to test themselves in tourney with those favorites. Being forced to play certain characters can result in a lower fun factor for some people. Not that your idea isn't a good test of skill, but there are many other factors to consider for a tournament format. I think your idea would be fun for a casual group who enjoys playing random characters just for the heck of it.

Oh it would be much easier with mirrors no doubt. Haha that's honestly the biggest hurdle in creating Unmatched formats. I know there isn't technically anything in the rules against mirror matches, but the majority of the community does not like them and it can get sort of messy with certain fighters like Muldoon.
@@zeroskatr12 I guess my main concern would be if people ever wanted to play in-person Unmatched tournaments, something like Arsenal would require everyone to bring like, every character just in case they couldn't play the ones they wanted. But yeah, Muldoon on Muldoon would be a janky mess.

in this format i can make sure the opponent doesnt play the big three and elektra, this format can also lead to lower tier fighters getting a chance
Definitely! Although you run the risk of having to play the Big 3 and Elektra yourself if they didn't pick any of them 😅

@@Hilget we are working on an in-person solution currently. Though Conquest does solve that problem quite well.
