- Nigeria's Japa Syndrome: Gen-Z and Millennials Escape the Country For Better Life | Firstpost Africa
Tens of thousands of young Nigerians are following a popular trend to leave the country. It’s a trend known by the Yoruba word “japa” meaning “to escape." Japa is becoming increasingly popular with Gen Z and millennials. Nigerians are choosing to flee the country in search of better opportunities amid unemployment, poor governance, lack of infrastructure, and corruption in the country. Among the popular japa destinations are UK, U.S., and Canada. But the trend is negatively affecting Nigeria's economy, leading to a severe brain drain. The japa trend has specifically hit Nigeria's Medical industry and has left an already overloaded healthcare system struggling.

Kenyan Gen Z are busy fixing their country while Nigerian Gen Z are running away 😂😂
It is incredibly hypocritical to suggest that Nigerians are fleeing their nation without any reasonable grounds 😂😂😂. The vast majority of them are there to pursue their master's degrees, while others are there for the currency advantages. Let that stick in your mind.
You mean the Indian colony of Kenya where the black Africans take pride in being a former British colony?
Kenya is still rule by england
Stay in Nigeria and build your country. Kenyan youths are leading protests against their government, but as former president Buhari called them, LAZY NIGERIAN YOUTHS who don't want to contribute to the country and want to share oil money.
All the country they are running to legally and illegally build their own country through sweat and blood. Nothing is automatically easy.
Instead of holding your government accountable. You are running 🏃♀️

Nigerian Gen Z should learn to fix their country ,not flee. When Nigerian Gen Z will lose fear ,the government will lose its power .

They won't listen or understand the importance of staying back and fighting for their country. Someone said EndSARS, you are just looking for the required conviction for your cowardice.
Some of you, still hate Igbos for wanting Nigeria broken up , like the country is working for anyone.
The Japa phenomenon favours the West that is why they are allowing it - assuming they cared and refused entry of Nigerians into their countries, this won't even be a topic.
The myopic ones do not understand the meaning and danger of "Brain drain", so , I will just keep quiet..
For the person who said .... a system that helps me .. rest, some smart individuals built their system to what it is and many countries built theirs on tears, blood and iron.
Easier said than done. The govt will unalive anyone that tries to do anything that negates their style of govt while the international community sits and does nothing.
Ain't nobody got time to repair a condemned country. We out!
I hate when people from functional democracies say "stay and fix your country." It's so moronic😡. In our countries, fear is your friend. If you want to be a hero, you will die very fast and your heroics will be an example to anyone who wants to do the same. where I'm from, we have activists languishing in prison or dissolving in acid (and this is not a joke). What can you fix when the people that rule are brutal and corrupt. The UN has and always will be toothless, people will take a knee and protest for a junkie named George Floyd but will totally ignore the brutality that ensues in the land we are fleeing from, thereby giving brutal regimes tacit go-ahead to crush decent with impunity.

Don't tell Nigerian youths about fixing their country because they have made significant efforts but all to no avail. The ENDSARS protest and the Obidients movement were typical moves to start something new and positive in the country but all those efforts did not end well. The powers that are holding the country are so evil minded and mean. And the real issue is the country is highly divided by tribalism and religious sentiments. Again, Nigeria is the most tribalized country on earth. Most, not not all Yoruba will prefer Nigeria is destroyed under Tinubu, who was kicked out for bad governance because he is Yoruba. As an African American, I’ve noticed that many Gen Z Nigerians seem heavily influenced by American, UK, and Canadian cultures, which is understandable. However, this raises the question of how it helps build a modern Nigeria, especially with widespread corruption and a lack of willingness among the youth to make sacrifices for progress. Shoutout to my Kenyan brothers and sisters for demonstrating how to do it right. It’s easy to move to the West, but tackling long-standing issues is much harder. Having worked in both countries, I can say that both Kenyans and Nigerians are incredibly talented. However, Kenyans often let their actions speak for them. My father's generation of academics felt at that time that the country's policies did not encourage research and their "take home pay could not take them home" and explored better opportunities I'm the academia in better equipped universities in Europe and America. Funny enough you will still find Yorubas and fulanis fleeing the country tooo😂😂😂😂😂😂
Fulani? 9/10 of Nigerian diaspora are Southerners
This reporter (Alyson) did a "JAPA" from WION.
I will fix my country some day, I promise.
I would be the best country in the world, economically and militarily in the 30 years.
You guys shouldnt have made a news about this. 😂it should be on a low key else other countries may start refusing visas to Nigeria.
judging by the leaders idiotic solution to the problem... sheesh, i can't really blame them for leaving!
Nigeria is an industrious state with youths with great potentials. As many are going many are here developing our country

😂😂😂 I love how the presenter explained “japa” Unfortunately it’s the reality. If you just leave, pls go through legal route
we are just tired of the circle of corruption in our country thats why we are trying to leave home so we can feed home, things look so bleak in nigeria no good paying job so its better toleave home for greener pasture than to destroy your home
@@tundegordian7273 But Nigeria is being destroyed anyway and those fleeing are just going from one sinking ship to another.
Kenya is the best democracy in Africa 🇰🇪
Shame on nigerians for their inability to eradicate criminal, embezzlers, rulers in nigeria. Japa is creating more misfortune in nigeria
How? If people want to leave, let them!
It is unfortunate people no longer want to know the full truth about what they believe. I am a Christian from birth and I made sure I know what Christianity is about
We are not fleeing more than india though
Lol. @Firstpost is a joke. Nigeria is not even the 10 travel countries in the world.
@Alyson Le Grange, this is no news. So, what was the emphasis all about.
India news channel talking about japa while they re 10× larger than Nigerians in those countries.. If that isn't been bias i wonder what it is then..
How many leaders face justice for their crime in Lagos lekki tollgate . Na japa sure pass jor
The nigerian government is the issue
I think it is better to japa for their lives now than to all turn into criminals. Japa will train and develop them for better future just like China and India citizens. Nigeria is irreparable right now, the passed and current leaders who recycle themselves in government have no serious tangible agenda for the development of our nation ( It is the government that fix, build country bcz they enormous resources at their disposal). The country wealth is highly mismanaged and huge gap between rich and poor, old and young people exist i.e average graduates of Nigeria university will be poor because of lack of creative employments for them unlike in the pass a high school cert get better employment. Government lack good initiatives, implementation of good ideas plus corruption and bad system of governance to enrich the few of them leaving the country bankrupt is the driving force for Japa. Absolute NOTHING is left for Gen Z to thrive.

They also come to south africa
Nigeria's situation is totally different than Kenya's. Unlike In Kenya, there's a dedicated divide along religious and tribal lines, such that a protest may be seen as an attack on one side, and it can easily spiral out of control into tribal or religious war. So it's hard for the entire country to protest with a common goal. Another thing is that our government in Nigeria is brutal unlike the more lenient Kenya's government, and a protester has a 50% chance of getting killed or jailed. Protesters in Nigeria usually have to face crackdown by the ferocious soldiers, not even the police..
