    A few other things (pros) that you didn't mention that I think are relevant and make this rack much better than Kuat or Thule. 1) locks that go through the ratcheting arms and the bike wheels to secure the bikes and prevent them from being stolen. Although options, they are relatively inexpensive and can be common keyed. They are much more secure than the little cable locks that the other manufacturers use. 2) You can run the rack as a single, double, or triple (in some models quad). They are easy on/off depending on what you need and they have the same optional locks that you can use to prevent them from being stolen. 3) For those who don't keep the rack on all the time, they have an optional piece that you can attach to the garage wall and mount the folded rack to when not in use. This is the best option that I've seen to keep your rack out of the way. 4) I bought the 1.25" receiver, but it came with a 2" adapter. This is great if you have a car and SUV or truck that you mount it too. Again adds versatility. 4) The ratcheting system for the bikes secure both wheels, don't touch the frame or wheels, and allow you to load and unload the bikes much quicker. 5) Many would complain about the locks, tilt mechanism, etc. being extras/costing more money. However, even after I purchased all of these accessories/extras, I still paid 100-200 less than the comparable Thule or Kuat. 6) You mentioned that the connectors are not aluminum and might corrode. When you look at this unit, every individual little part is available on the 1UP website. So if you break a piece or just need to replace a worn or corroded part, they are available.
    I've had Thule, Kuat, and Yakima. The build quality and user flexibility with the 1UP is far superior to me. Plus...it is made in Wisconsin, USA!!!

      Easy. Don't leave bikes on a rack and it won't get stolen. I know its a stupid non-answer but really, if someone is determined enough, they can break any lock on your rack. Just keep an eye on your bikes during rest stops and take the bikes off when you dont need it to be on a rack.

      I use the OneUp pin locks on the arms for anytime I have to leave the bike on for a short period (quick stop at the grocery store) & I add 2 Kryptonite chains (1 between bikes, if 2, & 1 from that chain, or single bike, to the main support beam) if I need better security.

I have a 17 Forester XT and i purchased a Saris 4 platform rack but i have replaced the first level tire holders a few times now because its right in line with the exhaust, it melts the plastic after long drives. From what you can tell are there any parts that could be affected from the exhaust?

    • @AdventureswithREMAX
      @AdventureswithREMAX  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, the rack is aluminum and for my understanding aluminum does not hold heat. Also have not had any issues with tires or bike parts in exhaust line. the cathedral style of the rack seems to put the bikes nice and high

      For about $25 or $50 installed, many muffler shops will put a 45 or 90 degree exhaust bend on. I had it done on a trip to NY from Maine when we used a tray rack to carry our luggage since we had 6 people in the Highlander. Worked awesome.

  • @TheSpicyRican

    Just remove the entire locking ball bearing pin setup completely and have your rack's hitch bar connector cross-drilled through, from anywhere between a 1" to 1 & 1/8th" single hole... depending on the thread size of the key-locking hitch-pin you have? Continuing to use the factory ball bearing/long pin setup that is included on this rack for "security" purposes doesn't work because the alley key bolt just naturally comes loose on its own when you're driving. Not only that, the most current model of this rack have a slotted hitch pin hole where the slot (from the front to the back of the hitch bar) of your rack is like 4 inches long. Thus, from an engineering standpoint, the rack could still easily loosen up and be pulled out of its "secured" spot but not come completely out? In-turn, if and when the rack does so... the rack + your bike(s) could be dragging the ground behind you while you drive and you would never know it if you had your radio volume up and/or you never looked in your rear view mirror?
    This is what I had done to mine to keep it from the factory-installed custom alley key bolt setup consistently loosening as a result of driving while going over numerous bumps in the road. Then, because I had completely removed the factory-installed ass-end of the ball bearing/long pin setup... I just got a completely flat, metal connection bracket that connects 2 large flat wooden fence posts together and cross-drilled the flat bracket at the proper length from the open-end of my vehicle's hitch to align with the dead center of the factory hole on my hitch. Thus, the flat metal fence connector bracket is now being used as a "shim" to keep the entire rack from wobbling and it does a pretty damn good job!
    FYI... the flat, metal fence connector bracket that I found to be eventually used as a shim was found in the "Wood & Fence" lumber section at the far end of Home Depot.

  • @villagevoice1
    @villagevoice1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I just purchased this rack and it now comes with slots on the side of the male hitch and a locking pin that goes through the receiver (male & female). This seems to prevent the rack from accidentally falling off or getting stolen by unscrewing the ball-cam mechanism. Note that I am referring to the 2" Super Duty Single (although all the 2" models seems to have it). The 1.25-2" version does not appear to have this feature so if it's important check the website pics/descriptions. I like the rack a lot so far.

      I do have that spot where you can vertically put a pin in. Mine did not come with one. My point is also just trusting that method of keeping the rack in. Like I said we must be heavily tested in okay but I'm just used to putting a horizontal cotter pin into hitches.

      the fact that you can stack bikes and have them not touch each other with all of the adjustments up and down left and right with the cathedral. the fact that you can add one extra piece at a time so you can have 3 or 4 bikes. Very lightweight and aluminum. I've had some issues with the kuat gumming up with the j hooks where the arm would not ratchet down. Especially in the cold. With a mtb/fatbike, you can tighten it enough to bring it home flat. With a road or narrow gravel, it might damage the rim if tightened enough.

    I've had my 1up for about a month now and it did come with the slotted opening for the hitch pin to go in horizontally which sets my mind at ease about this rack falling off. They even included the locking hitch pin. I also bought the heavy duty "not super" double bike rack and am considering the ez handle addon. I will most likely be getting a 3rd bike addon eventually. Are you able to keep that ez handle on your rack when the addon is installed? The majority of time I will keep my rack as a two bike with occasionally adding on the 3rd and would rather not have to buy a 2 bike ez handle and a 3 bike ez handle. I think the EZ handle should be sold as a kit that can be used either way. Very informative video, I love my rack so far. I get lots of compliments on my rack. Lol

      @@RonnieJful The 1 1/4" hitch does not. I called and was told it would compromise it due to the ball-tightening mechanism already there. I believe his words were something like, "...just not enough room in there."

    2 stars for poor camera work. Filming the wratcheing so up close that we cannot see what you are doing. It is left up to the imagination. That is the whole point of VIDEO.
