What really hurts the department is the people at the top they don't listen to the officers in the trenches who work in dangerous situations like that female officer in the video and trust me the only reason she didn't get hurt was because they didn't wanna hurt her I commend her for standing her ground but she never should have been in that situation because in prison when something bad happens there's zero reaction time I'm just stunned she didn't call for backup thank goodness she walked away without getting hurt.

So you have people in prison waiting for years until they get a trial. Anyone technically could be charged with a crime whether they are innocent or not. This means that majority of the prison population have not even been convicted of a crime since they are still awaiting trial. A lot of the prison inmates are pressured to take plea deals since the odds of a black or hispanic man winning a criminal case is low. Now you have people that might be innocent in jail but there is no telling how high that number is. Kalief Browder was one of them but he refused to take a plea deal. It's rare that inmates attack female officers. It's actually common that they protect them. Also, the inmates know where the cameras are situated. Most attacks on officers occur in areas where surveillance is poor. As chaotic as this may appear, you can tell from the officers movement, that she wasn't overly concerned for her personal safety. Increase the pay drastically, give them better conditions and you will see how quickly the position for guards fills up.Second is the facilities in the prision are bad, it probably houses more inmates than it was built for. They need to overhaul and renovate Rikers. Thirdly I my opinion to work as a corrections officer you have to have a certain kind of temperament. It's not a very pleasant job at all. It is the kind of job that attracts sadustic people. Not saying every guard is sadistic but the job does attract those kinds of people.

Many of the inmates are innocent. Awaiting court to plea there case. That's why I hate keyboard lawyers doctors and warriors who sit behind their phone screen and whack off for 18 hours of the day then spend the rest trying to tell someone else about their business. You need to be focusing on getting your nut before you bust a vein.

Low staffing levels is an issue in many correctional facilities across the country. The Officer in the video should be with at least one other officer in the unit and responding Officers just a radio call away. Rikers Island will continue to be in the news (fight clubs etc..) when Officers are placed in dangerous situations.

@@mattk8810 It would solve some of the safety and security problems. The facility I work at (prison in Michigan) houses level 2 prisoners and we have a staff shortage problem as well. Thankfully a large number of the prisoners at the facility were I work has been in the system a while and are heading home. Rikers is a jail, meaning some of those guys are awaiting trial (probably true Level 4 & 5 prisoners). So more staffing would definitely help.

What ppl don’t know is, that theirs 1 correction officer to 30-40 inmates/ individuals that has a lack of respect for authority in which they have to supervise! What the news not mentioning is that these officers are being force by the department to work 24hrs shift, they not being afforded any breaks, no access to your love ones and no food! Not to mention you have to call n beg to go home. How can any one perform in these work conditions, especially in a hostel environment!? Let’s just say something goes wrong during your work shift, the department is quick to terminate you instead of helping you. People are scared to do their job! I been a correction officer on rikers for 2 years, that job n stress is not worth it!

it happened in 2012 I believe this is why you need to have isolation for all the inmates as well as updated to have try to make it more safe for all since its mostly dormatory style and gangs are prevalent and the COs only care about themselves with the laws implemented saying you get 7 years for attacking them why not have it if anyone gets into a fight they get 25years and if anyone had a knife a uses it gets death so that way if Rikers is monitored as it should be with cameras then you would know unless there's a way to manipulate that as well
