My disappointment and despair came when "the former guy" appointment his 3rd justice SCOTUS ..I am beginning to think there's a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Accountability for all.
This is what happens when everything works on an honor system, and one entire party operates entirely in bad faith. So much for checks and balances.

Once upon a time. Republicans decided to embrace even the criminals among the guns&bibles crowd after they were so horribly -- rightfully -- embarrassed by and chastised by voters after Nixon. Reportedly, at least, Fox was created to spread alternatives to calls for justice when Republicans get caught. The Republican party owners prefer "alternative facts" rather than having voters face any reality that is unhelpful to their quest for power and money.
That would presuppose Clarence Thomas has any integrity or ethics and he has proven, beyond a reasonable doubt, that he is devoid of either of those. He plans to corrupt the bench with his foul stench. And we, the people, shall pay the highest price.
To retake the House and expand the Court is possibly the only Democrat answer, unless the good Lord personally sees Thomas removed from this earth. Why shouldn't there be as many justices as there are circuits, anyhow? That would be an anti-gerrymander.

Do you think Mitch McConnell has any sense of honor about this? He blocked Obama’s appointment and forced the Kavanaugh appointment through. Getting the modern incarnations of the parties to take ethics seriously, when it gets in the way of political expediency, is a big barrier.
The Ginni Thomas stuff has been known since 2014 and it didn’t make a difference then, and probably won’t change anyone’s mind now.

Abe Fortas argued one of the most important cases in history before the Supreme Court years before he became a SCOTUS justice. _Gideon v. Wainwright,_ in 1963. In that case, it was determined that the Sixth Amendment guaranteed the accused right to counsel whether or not the defendant could pay. Before 1963, if couldn't pay for a lawyer, you had to represent yourself.
Things we take for granted were fought for and paid for. And they can be taken away at any time if we are not vigilant. We learned last year with _Dobbs._ We must never forget it.
The point is there is zero chance that happens with any of the no-shame republican justices.
Ironic, considering that we had a revolution to become a country of laws, not a country with nobles living above the law.

Clarence Thomas should have recused himself during his hearings as that was something concerning about his personal life. The same thing goes for Kavaunah and and his personal life. What a shameful and corrupt court we call Supreme Court.

@@Slo-ryde the answer is that it’s constitutionally a bit problematic for the executive branch (of which DOJ is a part) to go after the judicial branch. So what the Senate Judiciary committee has done first is to file an ethics complaint with the Judicial Conference to investigate him. They’re hoping the judicial branch will police their own, to avoid constitutional issues.

Also, since the Constitution designates the House of Representatives as the only chamber that can initiate an impeachment procedure and the Republicans have a slim majority in the House Thomas can rest, comfortably assured no action against him will be initiated. The standard here is that the appearance of impropriety is a sufficient cause.

You can't expect those who never had a shred of integrity to suddenly behave ethically.
It makes me wonder if Thomas is the only judge on the Supreme Court that has been bought. Why else would the silence from Roberts be so deafening?! I am forced to wonder if an ethics committee should look at all of the justices. In all fairness that might be best considering Thomas said he consulted his colleagues and was told that he didn't have to report his gifts.
I watched a fair amount of Thomas' confirmation hearings
in the wake of the very similar Bret Kavanaugh fiasco...

Fortas was Chief Justice while Nixon was President. Nixon was fond of the idea of replacing him with a more conservative justice, and saw this as his opportunity. The house and senate were majority Democrats, so Nixon ordered a Justice Department investigation. There is no doubt Fortas was taking bribes from sketchy characters. With pressure from the Attorney General Fortas resigned. In the end the whole scheme worked out as Nixon wanted it to when conservative justice Harry Blackmun was sworn in. It's the same game today. Republicans don't want to be down a conservative justice while a democrat is president.
Not so much apples and oranges. They were both on the Supreme Court. The only difference is the time in history and the obvious difference between Fortas, who put the importance of the public’s faith in the Supreme Court above his own interest. Now that’s real integrity. In that regard Fortas and Thomas are oranges and rotten apples.
A supreme court justice should have a fairly clear understanding of the law; after all, it's the SCOTUS. Or, they should have a powerful intellect and sound judgement. HOW can Thomas possibly say that he hasen't done anything wrong ???

Abe Fortas was a close personal friend and advisor to LBJ. One could argue that LBJ had his own ethical limitations. But that didn't stop Fortas from doing the right thing. Was it Fortas and/or LBJ, or was it maybe the influence that [what would now be considered to be} the mainstream media has that was the driving force?
This is how long it takes to take the word of a well respected and educated woman. I have no illusions what my chances are at ever being taken seriously.

I lived in Canada all my life. In 1986, as a 13 year old I was fortunate to take a school bus trip through the north eastern US from Toronto to Washington DC. I got to see many famous sites along the way and in Washington DC. Unfortunately one of the sites we missed due to scheduling mishaps was the US Supreme Court. If I were part of that tour group today without scheduling conflicts, I would be too ashamed to go inside!
She didn’t pay tax on her income? Whaaaaaat? She is married to a SCOTUS member? Whaaaaaaat? He is still on the bench? Shame on the Court, the Congress, and the Executive Branch! Pressure can be brought to bear from all sides, and should be! He claimed Ginny had no income. I call $120,000 a year and a cushy $500,000 additional donation from Harlan Crowe a nice income, indeed. What did she have to do for Mr. Crowe to earn that kind of salary which she considered negligible?
The more Thomas denies and tries to legitimize his actions the guilter his actions look this makes the whole court look corrupt either by willful negligence or complicity.

He set the tone for being unqualified…. 2005 Samuel Alito, 2018 Brett Kavanaugh and 2020 Amy Coney Barrett. Republicans and Republican Presidents have appointed the majority and maintained the conservative majority since 1969-2016…. Scalia died and Obama was about to turn the Court liberal 5-4 …… BUT Democrats and Never Hillary and Bernie voters no show gave Republicans and Trump 3-4 Justices…..there was rumors that Trump’s second term that Clarence Thomas would retire….. His staying on the SCOTUS is an affront to Justice Ethics and betrays the American People.
It also shows the integrity of our Congress. In 1966 you could find a Congress with integrity to get rid of people who had questionable ethics. Today it seems as though that is qualifications for Republicans and corporate Democrats to become a member of Congress is to have little to no ethics. Same goes for Republican appointed judges and Supreme Court Justices. It is sad our country has fallen so far for power.
