An argument can be made that Francescatti was the greatest all- around violinist of the last 75 years. Flawless technical prowess coupled with singing, effulgent romanticism and yet also musical rigor and brilliant instincts for phrasing. An artist who fused the Apollonian and the Dionysian as few have.
Love this from my childhood (now I am 50). My violin teacher gave me LP with Francescatti playing Kreutzer sonata and said 'this is astonishing'. I agreed with him after listening, and every time I listen this again, I agree once more.
For sure in the top-five of the 20th century Kreutzers ! And for the integral recording of Beethoven’s sonatas a clear number one (with Kremer/Argerich duo as only challengers). Du TRÈS grand art !
Welche wunderbare Erinnerung hinterlässen Zino Francescati und Robert Casadesus aus dem Beethoven Jahr 1970. Ein Genuß sie rein per Zufall wieder zu erleben. Bravo
To understand what happened with this Sonata we must know the circumstances that happened in its first performance: The sonata was originally dedicated to the violinist George Bridgetower (1778-1860) as "Sonata mulattica composta per il mulatto Brischdauer [Bridgetower], gran pazzo e compositore mulattico" (Mulatto Sonata composed for the mulatto Brischdauer, great madman mulatto composer). Shortly after completion the work was premiered by Bridgetower and Beethoven on 24 May 1803 at the Augarten Theatre at a concert that started at the unusually early hour of 8:00 am. Bridgetower sight-read the sonata; he had never seen the work before, and there had been no time for any rehearsal. After the premiere performance, Beethoven and Bridgetower fell out: while the two were drinking, Bridgetower apparently insulted the morals of a woman whom Beethoven cherished. Enraged, Beethoven removed the dedication of the piece, dedicating it instead to Rodolphe Kreutzer, who was considered the finest violinist of the day.
I see it,I hear it BUT it's hard to believe that all good music it's on this machine (computer)....I threw away my l.p vinals because of this "technology"..

Ehem, is it written like this in Beethoven's score? His bow retakes are just musically strange. Also the beginning is forte then subito piano. Altogether partly strange interpretation, far from score 😂
I thought the bow retakes made perfect sense and it is a majestic interpretation, as one would expect from one of the great violinists of the 20th century. Beethoven didn't provide bowings in this section, but in any case, how else would you do it? An upbow on a chord like this is equally awkward. The fact is it is quite pianistic writing (even thought Beethoven played the viola so he understood violin technique pretty well).

C'est vraiment du très haut niveau !
First time I have here, Francesca when I was 20 years old now I am 80 he's always great violinist

D'accord
That beautiful sounds. Pitch impeccable. All heart when he plays even at this age Zino was still in great form. LOVE THIS.. ❤️
Wow, never thought we can get to see this.

Wonderful playing!
Exquisite performance by two masters!
Браво!👏👏👏
La technique d'archet dans les variations du largo est extraordinaire !
素晴らしいの一語に尽きますなあ。
歌うヴァイオリン。甘美でありディグニティもある。
ナタン・ミルシテインに共通する美しさに感嘆!
This is Zino Francescatti not Nathan Milstein. Nothing to compare in their violin approaches.

Cortot is better because he doesn't use the sustain pedal. Casadesus is Mr leadfoot.
