An interesting detail I noticed is that Jesse Plemon's character (red glasses soldier) has multiple watches on his wrists, meaning he's been stealing them from corpses
In a two way rifle range situation, you'll be surprised what loot stands for currency.
There's historical precedent for that as well. Apparently it was common practice for Soviet soldiers to take watches from German soldiers and citizens as they advanced towards Berlin. And if you believe Band of Brothers, Frank Perconte (the short one who always brushes his teeth) made a habit of stealing them from German corpses as well. I couldn't find anything on Perconte specifically, but given the overall accuracy of BoB, I'd be willing to bet it happened.
Missed that on my initial viewing, great spot! I suspect this is a nod to the image "raising a flag over the Reichstag". It's a pretty infamous image that was famously doctored multiple times to increase its drama as well as the airbrushing/removal of the bottom left soldier's second watch. I suspect this film is full of easter eggs to photographic/conflict history.
I kinda doubt watches are worthwhile loot in the 21st century but it’s a cool throwback 80 years to when watches were good metals at the apex of fine machinery before the invention of computers, thus valuable loot.
In the 21st century I would imagine NVGs, thermals, IV plates, batteries, wedding ring’s and custom rifles in stsndard calibers would be typical loot.

Agreed, it wouldn't just be an American civil war the world would have to deal with but the total degradation of the US petro-dollar which damn near the entire world backs their own individual currencies by. It would be a total shitshow for all parties involved.

That shooting stand off is incredible and subtle. The point? One side is trying to kill the other. That’s it.

The scene was probably the most tense of the whole movie. They managed to make a gunshot make people jump in the theater during a goddamn WAR movie! That takes some serious buildup.
Loved his character from breaking bad both in the series and in the movie. He has that intimidating low key vibes which shows in civil war.
The map and the names felt like Fallout and HOI4

The people who are upset that Alex Garland didn't pick a side as the "Good guys" in this movie are like that soldier at 5:14. They don't care about the message of the movie, they only care about getting validation that their beliefs are the right ones or to hate him for not sharing theirs.
While that's true in the sense of people wanting it to be a 1 to 1 analog, you can objectively be on the right side of an issue/conflict while being an unscrupulis character.

Expecting this movie to back a side is missing the point entirely. There shouldn’t be any sides, it shouldn’t come to any war at all. The movie is a warning. Let’s not do this.
It doesn't pick sides but it does let you know that the president has turned into a pseudo dictator that has done quite a bit of harm to the nation thereby somewhat justifying the other factions motivations.

As a guy from rural west Louisiana who has a house full of guns and holds traditional beliefs, I'll say that a Civil War in America is about as likely as an alien invasion or Zombie Apocalypse. Most Americans aren't physically fit enough to endure the riggers of the outdoors for an extended period and would have an extremely difficult time coping with the elements. Americans have lived in a bubble and relatively issolated from the real trauma of life on planet earth. Once the power would go out and the food stopped coming, people would fold up like babies. Also. 70% of Americans depend on some type of doctor prescribed drug to function normally and a simple untreated infection would kill a person very easily due to the fact most have grown up in fairly sterile environments since the 1970s. Those old enough to have grown in harsh conditions (The Vietnam Generation) are now too old to be part of an effective fighting force.
Also. Most of the states that would want to rebel against the Federal Government are the most reliant on Federal money. Louisiana being one of them.
Go one hot summer in Louisiana without electricity, running water and A/C and you'll never talk about another Civil War again.
Louisiana sucks. I drove from I-10 from Texas side to LA side in 2017. The landscape was the same on both sides, the road quality took a dump the moment I crossed into LA side.
I'm actually glad there is no good guy side in the civil war. If it ever comes to it, it won't be pretty, and I'm not sure how it will end. It turns it from an action movie to a political warning, which in this climate right now, is very, very much needed.

Highly recommend watching this in IMAX. The sound was deafening from all the aircraft, explosions. Each gunshot was terrifying and made plenty of people in the theater jump in their seats (me included). It's more of a road trip movie than anything else
The sniper shots had me jumping. They did great with the "small" budget. While I never served abroad, I did spend a lot of time near gun fire and with guns. It kinda brought me back.
As someone who spent 6 years in Iraq/Afghanistan as an EOD tech, I've had my fill of explosions and gunfire.
I hadn't seen the movie trailer and went into the film blindly, and I'm glad I did. The rogue soldiers shooting journalists scene was probably the single most scariest thing I've seen during a movie in a long time. The sound of each gunshot after the pause from them trying to diffuse the situation was scarier than any Blumhouse film trying to jumpscare the audience. Was a very unique experience that oddly felt a bit realistic
Don't recommened this movie, its awful unless you know what the movie is. This comment fails to mention the fact that if you dont realize its about the photographer not anything to do with civil war then its pointless

I know what you mean. They did the same thing to Dawn of the Dead 2004 remake, The Watchmen film and I think with District 9 too but I think they want the background story in this ambigous.
@@parkmallbabypeople just have to have things spoon fed to them which must be difficult as a filmmaker when so much criticism seems to be about the ambiguity, which has been openly stated, was intentional.
More than enough was implied/spoken about to get a picture of the situation without having every detail spelled out for the viewer..

@@wowsuchname1939 I hear ya. Some movies have origin stories and background that helped it and there's others that really don't need to and this movie really does not need to. This is partly why I gave up on Star Wars because every minute detail now has to have some backstory and its ruined it.
@@wowsuchname1939 I think it makes sense thematically too. Doesn’t matter what the politics were at the beginning of the war. Motivation for fighting will have changed multiple times if not been supplanted by survival or bloodlust. Past a point, the nation (and sides of the political conflict) would be barely recognizable.
Cool idea. Either it’s timed horribly due to current political climate or it’s timed perfectly due to the current political climate. Try not to take things too seriously it’s just a movie about a modern civil war and how bad it would be if things escalated to that degree.

I'd say horribly timed. While it can and should be seen as a warning to what could be, the people that can go in and see it that way are mostly passive when it comes to politics, and most probably have no interest in it because of the nigh political narrative. Politicians will ignore it, activists will use it, and the only people who take the lesson that's supposed to be learned already know it! All the radicals will do is see their enemy where they will, and see their allies where they will. The message will fall on deaf ears.
the political climate is literally the reason this movie is being made
I've always thought that anyone who's ever been in the same room as a history book would know this. Or anyone who followed the news during the Bosnian civil war (remember Ratko Mladic?) or who knows what it's actually like in Haiti now or in Rwanda during the genocide. Maybe some people need the message graphically.
Civil War was pretty stressful to watch. It did a good job of depicting the horrors of war, even the gunfire made me jump out of my seat a few times. The fact these protagonists cared more about getting a good photo during these killings more than helping each other made me disgusted with humanity as whole. More than that soldier who just killed foreigners, that guy at the gas station who tortured those men, that fascist president, and all those factions. The one scene where I saw a glimpse of humanity in someone was when Lee deleted a photo of Sammy’s death.
It shows the difficulty of being a photo journalist in a civil war and the brutality of what a Civil war likely would be in the US.
I can say with certainty as human, you’re supposed to be more disgusted with the people doing the killing.
If no one documents the events, then how can anyone prove that it happened? Journalists are important for accurately reporting history.
@@KylaMedina The soldier who killed foreigners disgusted me. As for the photo journalists, they just seemed to care more about stroking their own egos than recording history. They just walked over others and let most people around them die just for their own vanity. That’s just as bad as the people doing the killing.

Genuinely insane you can walk out of this movie more angry with the journalists than anything else. Genuinely, unimaginably crazy the life you must live.
This movie is to show a civil war from a outside view. We don't know what side is the "good guys" but it's clear that both sides contain no humanity left, as we see on multiple occasions the brutality that they bring on eachother.
This film was disturbing, and yet heart breaking seeing your own troops kill eachother and let alone the president they swore at one point to protect.
Serving this nation's Army, definitely had a deep impact on my view of the film and left me very disturbed. It left my theater in silence and I think the message of "do not do this!" Got across everyone's head.
At the end of the day, no body is ready for something so heinous as a civil war like people think they are.
As both a Texas native and Army vet, it also struck a different cord with me, especially since my old unit (1st Cavalry) was front and center, with the insignia of the Air Cav being absolutely unmistakable, fighting for the Western Forces against the Federal Government.
It's a terrifying thought when you ask yourself "where would you fight in all this"? Even when you're a protected noncombatant (journalist) or evidently wounded/unarmed, it makes no difference. Even worse is when you're a veteran, with skills desperately needed (in my case, I was an Abrams crewman), and some faction or group finds out. People will force you to pick a side, regardless how much you may not want to, and you may have to; as we saw in the movie at several points, your life may literally depend on it.
@SlavGod47 Texas warriors right up here, and Army Vets. Although you had far more experience than me. I was an MP I know ew. Buuuuut did alot of combat support training, learned alot of shit, never acted like the hard ass, made friends with the combat guys and formed unbreakable bonds. All those Soldiers I trained along side with during Operation Combined Resolve XII, I couldn't imagine a far more painful and disturbing reality of fighting them or watching them kill eachother. Over all, war is not something to sniff at and I can't stand when civilians act like they think they're ready for a civil war.

Imo, I think the message that the movie is pushing is that maybe there are some things wrong with the government to a point that people might wonder if replacing the current system with a new one would be beneficial, and the movie is saying yeah, okay but what happens when that actually happens and war breaks out? Is a potentially more efficient and effective government worth the catastrophic effects of a civil war, especially in a country like the US, where defense spending takes top priority? The death and destruction would be immense.
The hundreds of thousands that die every year from incrementalism would disagree. Imagine if we said we cant free the slaves bc radical change would be too dangerous or scary
I was just stating what I thought the message of the movie was. Personally, I'm of the mind that the current government should go the way of the dodo, but I don't particularly trust that rebellious opinions like mine wouldn't grounds for persecution.

Short term suffering for long term comfort
The worst parts of the dissolution would not come from the US military spending, I fear, but from the way the American population is so grossly over-armed compared to most places. We all like to joke about how any theoretical Russian invasion of Alaska would go (does Russia know that civilians here own 50BMG's?), but the dissolution of central authority here would be very quickly followed by the rise of local warlords. A familiar pattern from other nations would be gangs of teenagers authorized to carry out retributions and supply runs .. they would have a 50cal machine gun mounted in the back of a pickup truck. Your teenage daughter might be worth a pallet of bottled water, depending on who needs what and how much anyone is willing to pay - and they might just take both and tell you you're lucky to be left alive. Suffice to say, it would be horrific here. And it sounds like the very point of this moving is remind people how gruesome it could be.
I just watched this movie last night. The end of this movie left me in shock. It felt so wrong everything. The amount of non combatants being executed by forces was just horror. I could only imagine how much worse It would be in an actual Civil War.
The Anti War theme and graphic depections show you joining the Armed forces for National Service will sometimes make you do terrible things in times of war justified by a narrative of Valor, honor, and duty, it will make you ask are you the villian but your commanders are screening you for loyalty checks, that sooner the conflict is over you're going to be thankful being put on gaurd duty at a installation half a world away from a conflict zone, PTSD can shape one's politics and world view.
I was gonna say they were probably secret service or hard-core loyalists, but a war crime is still a war crime.
They could have apprehended them, including the female secret service that tried to negotiate, but nah...like a quote said, war brings out the worst of people, NEVER the good.

While the vagueness of identifying the specific forces affiliation is a HUGE intentional strength of the film, I think there were masterful visual and dialogue suggestions allowing people to fill in the gaps that I think many people missed, first I think on both sides it goes without saying that while there are formal large scale forces, there are also logically going to be paramilitary groups with varying degrees of affiliation and that have potentially splintered off from the larger forces.
If you notice there was a recurring association between pastel rainbowish color tags and also the ethnicities of actors being cast(specifically there were seemed to be a higher number of non white and specifically east Asian people in the western forces which demographically makes sense with the demographics of the West Coast) and the western forces or potentially the maoist faction that was only mentioned once. The paramilitary(lack of uniform) in the second pit stop seem to have been associated with the western forces(obviously they were fighting gov/loyalist forces) additionally the snipers also had similar rainbow color tags, hair dye and nail polish and so were likely paramilitary associated with the western forces or a unit that had become separated from main forces for awhile.
In a negative association, the refugee camp, was almost exclusively non white people, suggesting that some faction may have been particularly targeting or expelling them, it doesn't seem like the loyalists were strictly ethno nationalist, but given the location of the refugees near the border of effective loyalist control it seems likely that either the loyalist faction has ethno nationalist factions embedded or has an ideology that loosely compliments ethno nationalists and therefore results in many nonwhite groups getting targeted as enemies AND we know the WF wasn't strongly ethno nationalist from their force composition. So, the group who seemed to be ethnically cleansing, based upon the limited amount we know, has a few possible origins, either they are a truly unaligned(and never aligned) paramilitary group that has their own unique take and have been empowered in the chaos OR what seems more likely given their resources they are a paramilitary group with limited affiliation with the loyalists/were a loyalist unit that went rogue and is effectively operating under the local leadership to perform an ethnic/nationalist cleansing.
Additionally, an interesting thing within the WF forces was that there also seemed to be really deep world building where slightly different uniforms, dialect, dialogue and presented unit operations suggesting who were forces originally from Texas vs California, most memorably, the team that stormed the white house seemed to be comprised of some type of special forces unit and a couple individuals from another more generalized combat unit, the black woman in the group seemed to be suggested as being from California, where the special forces unit(or at least their lead officer) seemed to be suggested as from Texas which was also good because these were the two that performed the final execution meaning neither sub faction was solely responsible.
All that said, I think again the strength of the movie was that these things weren't so explicitly stated which is good as a movie/story telling but also maintained strong chaotic ambiguity in the ideological lines.
Worth noting that the WF forces assaulting DC included a contingent of Marines. I think that kind of implies that a good portion of the US military defected to the rebels.
@@TrajanAugustusYep, and that's because, in the millitary, they train you to become loyal to the constitution, and to serve the people. Clearly, the president in the film had gone against both, and we know how that turned out.
@@Cund I think that's a true factor for sure, and is distinct in the US. But of course this isn't 100%, the gov still did have a decent portion of the military, a substantial amount of whom I think we can assume were in before the split
Also a factor that I think was well suggested in the movie was the distribution of military infrastructure, which TX and CA does have a substantial chunk of. Like if say Wisconsin and Michigan and Minnesota had been the rebels(I believe relatively light in military infrastructure although fairly heavy in armed citizens and militia groups) it would be hard to conceive of the early days not resulting in the rebellion being snuffed out without access to a decent inventory of planes and vehicles for example. And also the Eastern seaboard and south has a lot too, which explains why it sounds like the war had been going for awhile without just some quick victory.
All these details were so well done in the movie, the people just fixating on 'TX and CA can't be friends' don't get it.
@@TrajanAugustusExactly, the soldiers that join the final assault on the White House are wearing the US patches on their gear, not the patch of the WF, indicating defectors from the surrendering loyalist force.
Ikr it’s very subtle and very good. I’d also like to add that Sammy mentions in the car that the current president is in his third term, which I think very quietly paints him as the worst guy (not bad guy, but worst guy) and probably gives us the reasoning behind the war in the first place.
I could pretty much guarantee you that the maps of states shown in the beginning wouldn’t be the same by the time of the film.
If California and Texas were working together, you could bet that Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada would have already been conquered by the Western Alliance. No way either of those states would be rolling on Washington DC without taking out those potential threats to their backyards. Plus, to get to DC they would have had to roll through at least four other states to get there.
I think it's also interesting that in these scenarios is how the Great Lakes region along with some of the bordering mid-west states are always overlooked. People don't really realize but the economy of the Great Lakes rivals both Texas and California right now, with the backing of the federal government and a wartime economy it would dwarf pretty much every other region overnight. It's called the Arsenal of Democracy for a reason and has contributed to the defeat of many armies and nations.
I dont think the other factions are fighting against each other, I'm pretty sure they're all collectively against the fed gov.
After the ending, though, it's likely they would turn on each other.

The movie takes place while the coalition of California and Texas already rolled on these states.
The way I interpret it, the federal government was taken over after the president contested the election results, disbanding the FBI to prevent an investigation and arrest.
Pro president gun nuts took over the government of States that didn't recognize him but Texas and California stayed strong and split up. Then they had to form an unlikely alliance to force the president and his loyalist out.
There are hints of that throughout the movie but it's not surface level. The most obvious being that the Cal and Tex alliance have actual military strength while the gov forces we see look like well equipped hobbyists.
This movie is called "Fall of the Empire" in my country.

The scenes of devastation at Washington DC are reminiscent of Berlin in Oliver Hirschbiegel's epic film 🎬 Der Untergang (Downfall).
I went and saw the movie with my daughter. We both thoroughly enjoyed the movie and the fact that the viewer got to decide if the good guys won or not (or if it was just irrelevant). As a photographer myself, I was actually quite impressed with the photography used in the film and the cinematography. I was also impressed by the combat scenes. They were loud, just like the real thing. Gunfire wasn't muted. I own AR-15s and the 5.56/.223 ones are very loud. I also appreciate that different firearms sounded different. The knack-knack-knack staccato of distant weapons all played in to make you feel like you were there right alongside these four. There were some nice touches, too, like the Boogaloo Boi outfits some of the combatants were wearing. You're right there in the thick of it, experiencing everything.
In the end, the politics here don't matter. The meaning of the story is found in Jessie overcoming herself and becoming what her heroine once was.
I will say this, though: If you have combat related PTSD, stay away from this movie or at least wait for it to hit the streams instead. You don't want flashbacks in a theater.
you kno I wanted to see the movie ever since my friend joked that they had to put california and texas together just so people know its fiction. I am also happy to see KD and other notable actors in the role. It seems like a good movie to watch.
Texas and cali also have massive millitary bases making it more fair😊

Gundam is like Star Wars, but better. Without all of the glaring plot holes, inconsistencies, obvious plot armor, retcon of material, etc... Gundam is truly the superior franchise.

It felt like a movie about War correspondents than anything else. I get that it's fictional, but one issue i've noticed with a lot of historical analysis, is the attempt to "depoliticize" war, when war is inherently political. I know there was the vague "fascist president who destroyed democracy to stay in power", but the tone of the film just comes off as a typical "both sides bad" lazy thought termination.
I think the point of that was because their Focus, was to make people go “I don’t want that to actually happen” if they had gone the more political route and been more upfront with that people get defensive and turned off, especially if it is done incorrectly . I also take what you mean by saying that there are a lot of times in history when times sides are bad, but I also think it's possible to be fighting on the right side while doing unscrupulous things. The broader context matters. If this was made in the 1990's I'd totally agree that "both sides bad" is lazy thought termination. But presently there's some people out there thinking we're headed for an actual civil war, and there's even some secretly hoping for it. IMHO this movie is meant to say "you sure about that"? My take away was that a lot of people in this country are incapable of realizing the reality of these topics without putting it into a framework like this that they can relate to on a personal level. The lack of realism in the framework of the conflict stemming from the fact that it's simply not the point.
That is pretty much it. People are gullible to let the real message go over their heads because they can't accept it. The movie is a good one at showing the warning: "Don't do a civil war!" Or don't let it happen since it won't be the way you think it will go.

It’s interesting to see the lines that the movie draws. From my point of view a lot of people theorize that any civil war in the future will be the government vs the people. I don’t think specific lines like the movie shows would be drawn in the United States mostly because it would just become anarchy if the government lost control. As much as I don’t want conflict, if the government devolves into tyranny it’s the job of the people to stand up against it.
If we do have a civil war, I don't think it'll be like this. I think it'll be more like Northern Ireland. The government would be one side of a "low level" grinding conflict.

A friend told me he did not like the movie because it did not have enough "meat" in the movie. I saw the movie and loved it. I love the fact it did not go into the politics or reasons. The important thing is what is going through people's lives during this dark times. No matter what the reasons are, it showed the country had broken up into different factions and americans were killing americans. Which the main characters were just showing their perspective of this event. That for me is the point of the movie.

something i noticed is that when lee told jesse that as a war photographer (?) they dont usually ask the questions but they take the pictures and let other people ask the questions. In the movie, we could see their photos as they were taken as a way to show that we are that other people who would be asking the questions, i think that adds to the theme of ambiguity of the film

I have heard a lot of bad about this film, but looking at the journey, not the overall story, make the film interesting. Not fun, just interesting. I am more apt to see this, than avoiding it.

I never thought i would see you reviewing this movie, but i'm glad i did
the trailers for Civil War did not leave me with high hopes or high expectations as it felt really exploitive and gross. then i went to see it...and i found it to be really exploitive and gross. my issues are not with its explicit content or the violence. what really bothered me about the film is this perception of its apolitical stance. this film does have an opinion but wants to hide it in the background which i to be pretty cowardly. in particular when they run with the Boogaloo Boys who are fighting soldiers in ACU's who were are not too sure about. Are they government forces? WF? Who knows. but we do know that when the warcriming begins and the upbeat 90's hiphop song is employed at an attempt at juxtaposing the tone of the song with the tone of the visuals and it just doesn't work. There are other blatantly subtle choices: "WE are going to Charlottesville, the front line" as a reference to the Take Bakc the Right a few years back. Using photos of BLM protests from Andy Ngo. dropping a phrase like AntiFa Massacre aren't so much points of references but easter eggs for anyone whos been tracking American political discourse. I thought it was an excellently crafted film, the performances are as good as they can be under a flawed direction, the shot compositions are gorgeous and the sound mix shockingly good. but at its core, this film is gutless and cowardly and i don'[t respect it. it pretends to be indifferent when its not and tries to hide its beliefs in plain sight and i find that to be disappointing, because as the film unfolds it has so much promise to be a truly great film but in the end is just a centrist's mealy mouthed "war is bad" and war porn from a different end of the political spectrum from the GWOT propaganda we are used to.

They insinuated that remaining neutral equates to safety and provision. Which is farthest from the truth. In conflict, neutral sides have no support or protection and will not fight to protect themselves or their way of life.
Whether right or left, POTUS' death was inevitable.
The underlying message is that if civil war has to come to America, then America has already fallen and it's over.
The writer of Civil War challenged right wingers that if their intention is to preserve America, then they shouldn't escalate the situation to the point where both sides are fighting. Even if the left is violent and destructive.
If the United States had taken that course during its founding, the United States would come under British rule and would not be the United States of America as it is recognized today.
What the writer failed to appreciate is it is the violent actions of the left, demanding representation without taxation or personal responsibility. The right demand additional representation if there is to be taxation and personal responsibility. But then there'd be no Equality, Independence, Freedom, Liberty, Truth, Justice, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Which is exactly what America was founded upon.
Good to see Kirsten Dunst in another movie, last I saw her was as Mary Jane in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. Might check this one out. Also I like how she was acting as a girlfriend of a photographer/hero and now she plays a photographer as her new character.

I just watched this movie a few hours ago. The ending left me thinking "Sooooo, that's it? The movie just started to get interesting and it's just...over?" I found Kirsten Dunst's character annoying, she's so depressed, anxious and withdrawn, bossy and unemotional through most of the movie, I seriously thought she was losing her mind near the end.

What is the game in the background
I think the states that make up the factions are incredibly important, as there are actual regional differences between the states and some of the combinations felt more like he just threw them together for no other reason then to keep it as vague as possible without taking a longer look into them as to WHY certain states would form new conglomerations or not. Keep in mind also that nations with heavily diverse ethnic groups balkanize once the major authority falls apart, exactly like what happened to the Balkans (hence the name) when the Soviets left the area. The only thing holding all those disparate groups together and not murdering each other was the oppressive force of the communists, and when they left everyone started carving out their little spaces at the expense of everyone else. Hell, you might even see the southern border states get re-integrated into Mexico just from the sheer amount of people with Mexican ancestry choosing to reform with their home nation now that the US is no longer a viable Republic anymore.
TLDR: Garland would've been better off not showing a map of the fictional civil war factions and just kept it ground level.
I always have issues with Garland's films for some reason. He has these great concepts, and the setup and middle of his films are exciting. It's their ending I always have trouble with. I felt the same way about Annihilation and Ex Machina- they had great setups and executions, but the ending left me lacking. Unfortunately, I felt the same with Civil War--I thought the idea of him not choosing a side and seeing things through the photojournalist's eyes was spot on; however, by the 3rd act and the attack on DC, I kept saying to myself: "Okay, so this is it? The end?' I felt something was missing, IMO.
I too felt the same way , I wouldn’t have minded a part 2 of the film if they felt the need to stretch out more story than the two hours ( which didn’t even feel like two hours) to get a better ending
The goal was set pretty quickly: get to DC and interview the President before he's killed. Idk, they did exactly that and succeeded in coming full circle with the final line of the film. Their goal felt somewhat noble in the beginning, exciting even, but throughout the film you see the costs pile up, and like Lee, start to wonder if they're even doing the right thing, or if it's all just self-serving. That final scene bookends their story perfectly in my opinion.
Would have been better off as a Walking Dead style series. It's a ridiculous ending. There'd be no one around to kill. They have tunnels right?

As much as I understand the desire to be neutral and "non-political," from a worldbuilding perspective the total lack of identity to any of the factions just makes the setting seem bland rather than bipartisan, a nothingburger instead of the intended neutrality.
Seriously, all they had to do was have a few two/three-word slogans for each faction and it would've done wonders for the setting. It would've even made that scene with the "What sort of American are you" line even tenser, after having heard so many warring factions on the trip up to that point.
Not at all - it would comletely ruin the "what sort of american are you?" line. The ambiguity, meaninglessness and ridiculousness of the character and line are the whole point.
The scene with the sniper illustrates the director's intention more broadly. Joel/The audience asks "who do you fight for" the soldier says "you're ret--ded".
I get your meaning, but it is unlikely in this scenario if you would know the slogan of your killers, or if they would bother to find out if you had the same slogan. There is already an unwritten reality in the America of shoot first. I would also argue that modern thinking in not blue coat, red coat on a field, it’s urban camo in a complex sprawling urban environment where each house might be a different faction. I have not seen the film. But wearing an arm band or shouting a slogan makes you a target in a city with hundreds of sniper windows on every street corner. I would suggest that even saying there are 4 factions, or loyalist states is not realistic, as if every person in Indiana would be team trump. It will be house to house warfare my friend.

This reminded me a lot of the Civil War (comic, not MCU) tie-in series, Frontline. At some point, right or wrong (pragmatics) doesn't matter when you fully grasp the human cost of either side.

I enjoyed how it was very apolitical, because as you say the whole theme of the film isn’t about right vs wrong but rather the cost of human life in a warzone.

The point is not to pick which side is right or wrong. The point is the real enemy is the war in the first place. It benefits no one, gets people killed, and sends a country into disarray and distrust. This is not supposed to be a feel good war movie where good guys kill bad guys.
I also found this to be a problem, if you want people not to choose sides, you can't hide them, show who they are and what they do, not as heroes or villains, but as they REALLY are, then make the public choose.

A movie meant for the theatres the insanely loud gunshots were wild when red glasses killed the first guy I jumped from how casual he was and then the loud shot. I really liked how the gunfights were insanely loud and then it would go silent and show the black and white photos. I find films about conflict - nation v nation, or civil, to be very interesting and shines a light on where we could be headed.
I've always liked movies about war, be it based loosely on/close to , real-life events, completely fictitious historically, futuristic, etc.
The worldbuilding in it makes no sense unless some very specific things occur which I highly doubt the filmmaker wants to touch with a 10 foot pole (glow ops, reconquista). The only somewhat realistic thing was limited internet. This shouldn't surprise anyone since Alex Garland is the dude who wrote the DMC reboot 😂.
Seriously read some primary sources on stuff like the Spanish civil war (Mine Were Of Trouble by Peter Kemp is a good one) and it becomes clear exactly how chaotic this kinda shit really gets.

Hate to be that one guy, but it is pretty much impossible in some parts. There’s no involvement from NATO, or any other events going on. Why are California and Texas working together? The amount of warcrimes as well? It’s also physically impossible for rebel forces to make it inside of the WHITE HOUSE, which is one of the most heavily secured buildings in the world. It also seems like we should be supporting the WF, as we follow them to DC, but I just couldn’t. The amount of warcrimes being affected by the rebels is nasty.

I understand why the filmmaker wanted to leave it vague but for me I just have a feeling of what is this all for and how did this happen?

I love your channel. It's opened my eyes to Star Wars and it's social commentary which faded from my interest long ago. I'm an original '77. I was 13 when "A New Hope" was released. It was a magical time to be the target age of this franchise. I don't believe I've commented before. I was a jaded prequel guy not completely accepting of Georges directing and writing. However, my young son loved episode 1-3. I've recently re-re-re-reviewed all the films with a new set of eyes and loved them... except the forced and painful to witness romance scenes, but .. that's everyone. So, thank you.
Here we go with the meat of what I would like to say.
My only concern as an older United States veteran is that simple minded people seem incapable of separating film, music and literature from reality. They take it all to heart. They hate Hollywood and crave the arena. They love reality shows which rewards them for ignorance. It's a disturbing state of affairs for my nation and the world. We have some seriously mentally unstable and angry people who have the ability to murder anyone they don't like with unbelievable fire power for a civilian. That's a serious problem even for a person who has owned firearms for hunting since I was 10. However, my family made sure I was properly trained and ... well.. mentally and emotionally capable of owning a weapon.
It's not that way anymore. Perhaps it never was. They believe it's their birth right to kill.
Automatic weapons are outlawed but it takes a simple parts swap and wallah... the very weapon and it's operators the allies used to "personally" hunt for the massacre they unleashed on their fellow grunts.
It really is a choice between the Republic and the Empire. Sane or insane. The upheaval of an entire economy and society by "evicting" 50 million people who are an integral part of our country. Firing of 100,000 government employees to install loyalists with sixth grade educations... but loyal and mean.

They're beyond perverted. They project. They dismiss. They bully and cry. They claim the Alpha status but incessantly whine about Taylor Swift.. yet they never seem to have girlfriends... curious. Some Alpha.
They're nothing more than a bunch of punks who are being programmed to kill. It's that simple.
If someone is triggered and loves the idea of civil war against the unarmed and innocent because they don't like them.. well screw you. Seriously.

bro its a movie not that deep. if you live in america and this movie alone makes you want to rise up or cause a civil war then you already have lost as a people. just saying.

Only to not be rage bait but instead a journalist view. But this kid went down a deep path that isn't there and is shook thinking that THIS MOVIE will key off a civil war and civilians dying. These are facts. I was a part of it. These are the ramifications of complacency and misguided trust of snakes who project their insecurities on to the innocent.
It's not the movie... it's the release of it to a beyond dumb society that is on the edge thanks to Nick Fuentes type monsters spreading the same old crap we fought wars over. Either re-read and take another stab at reason or move on.

I liked it and the "slice of life" vibe of it all. Very disturbing. But couldn't help but feel "this could be any country". Sure, it's shocking to see a modern day civil war play out on American soil, but given how our first one has been romanticized, I was more interested in learning more about how the US got to where it was. I get that the movie doesn't want to become preachy and lean into one camp or the other, but I wanted to understand why America got to this point so that I as an audience member could come out of it thinking "maybe let's not go down this path".
Maybe see the war through the journalist's perspective so we could organically get those different perspectives?
In the end, still a great film. Lots to think about.
This movie somewhat follows the original Civil War, and 6:47 says it better than any other timestamp. Obviously photography was in it infancy so pictures accompanying articles was not a thing, but after a battle and one side retreated, causing the shooting to stop, the journalists would rush onto the now defunct battlefield and write their notes for the future article.
