@VASAviation - 100% he was past the line. his entire aircraft was almost past the line, shy of maybe the end of his tail, but both wheels are 100% past the line. You can just barely see the opposing wigwag lights on the left side, just under his APU nozzle.
Thats 100% a Runway Safety Zone violation.
@@CapStar362 due to the angle of footage I didn't want to go to 100% but I'm really sure they were past the line. Just looking at the red runway sign, it looks pretty obvious
@VASAviation agreed, im looking at the sign and the wigwags
That controller was in the middle of issuing instructions to another aircraft yet maintained situational awareness and hardly even missed a beat. This guy is damn good at his job.
I believe they also have a system that alerts them, might be linked to RAAS
@@mcmuffin-z5v Probably the front gear crossing the stop bar, it's got a sensor on it for just this purpose
@@mcmuffin-z5v Lax uses asde x
@@mcmuffin-z5v That is correct. LAX has extensive ground radar coverage. This was a result of an accident at LAX when two airplanes collided at night.
@@-108-yeh, that’s why the controller gave the pilot a number for a pilot deviation and the ASDE system likely triggered. Don’t think so.
This controller is awesome. He goes by “Later Tater” because of his tagline. He’s done lengthy interviews on Airline Videos and is a fascinating guy, and a true pro, one of the best we’ve got in LAX. See how he kept his cool, didn’t waste time chastising the pilot, and just kept doing his job? Big contrast to some of the controllers at JFK. Too bad he’s going to be mandatorily retired soon.
A LAX legend. Bound to retirement soon
> Too bad he’s going to be mandatorily retired soon.
Hearing this he deserves it, keeping cool all the time does take a toll sometimes. Maybe train/coach some folks as a side gig or is that not allowed?
Trust me, its a good thing he's retiring. I have 26 years of ATC and less than 5 years left on the boards until retirement. I have had to make similar calls many times over--we all have. This kind of stuff takes a toll on you mentally and physically in a way that difficult to process and understand. He may sound cool and collected, but trust me, he's being eaten up inside.
@@sinebass808 I only understand that this is a job I could not do.
@@-108- Are you her Dad? She busted the Hold Short line.
Kudos to controller, kept cool, kept composure, didn’t miss a beat and was in the game the whole time
Best day of my life I was never that calm.
He's well known at LAX for something
@@VASAviation Glad that doesn't go unnoticed.
Nice contrast with SFO and JFK where they seem to yell at the pilots any chance they get 🙄
I remember Later Tater once telling AVL that he never wants to be in an audio recording/video like this. It eventually happened, right before retirement, but in the most positive way possible. His experience and professionalism shined here.
Everyone complimenting the controller, so I’ll compliment you at VASaviation instead. Holy crap has your production value gotten so good. The airport map with moving traffic, live atc aligned damn well with the movement of aircraft AND now adding the video on top again perfectly lined up with audio. Really impressive! Thanks for the hard work!
Super super thanks! Appreciate the support
I concur 🎉
@@VASAviationhappy new year and the thanks for another good year.
Yes, this was so cool!!! I haven't seen something just like this before... The way you did it makes things so clear. Great job!! 👍👍
Glad to see ATC watching as well as talking, that's the complete job that we need. Then afterward, no anger or drama. Kudos to LAX ATC.
@@-108- There *was* a pilot deviation.
2:05 mark shows LYM past the hold short line.
Why do you suppose ATC told them "possible pilot deviation" and gave them a number to call?
@@lastdance2099 Because I'm a dumbazz and didn't realize that my video player had stopped short (unlike Key Lime did) of the end. DOH!!!
That controllers speaks so clearly. Especially when giving the hold short. Good job!
One of the best in LAX
The emphasis and pauses were sheer perfection. Lovely stuff to hear.
Perfect example of "just because you have a lot to say, you can still annunciate it clearly and at a pace that people can actually understand". A lesson that a TON of controllers could stand to learn. Information is vital in this business and it's vital to make it understandable.
"...and hooold SHORT! (pause) runway 24L." Awesome. Saw another video recently where the pilot asked to confirm landing clearance 3-4 times bc ATC kept mumbling something like "cuttlelan" and he wasn't taking any chances. This ATC is the exact opposite. Excellent.
@@DaddyBeanDaddyBeanas a pax, I never want to be "cuttlelan" - appreciate everyone keeping us safe
Textbook pro ATC. Situational awareness on point and kept it professional and moving after clear. Well done.
Gives meaning to Air Traffic CONTROL.
LOVED the real time video accompanying the simulation. Great job!
Took long to edit but definitely worth it to have both Pov
In addition to good SA, the controller had excellent cadence and clarity while speaking. Way above average!
Id rather listen to this fella than that one guy at Kennedy, he's a true professional!
The controller is well known to AVL, Kevin Ray’s channel and he retired yesterday. He extended his career by two years previously. LAX is a coveted controller job so they have some of the best!
A very refreshing departure from the usual U.S. controller we hear on this channel often. Concise and very well annunciated instructions. No rushing through the phraseology.
I’m not shy of criticising controllers when necessary and especially ATC staffing levels, but that was an epic catch by that guy. Great job Tower controller, you earned every penny that day!
1:31. After working in a parallel crossing runway airport for 20yrs (CYYZ), I developed additional phraseology for just this situation, just to build a better picture for aircraft holding short...."Hold Short Runway 24L... DEPARTING TRAFFIC" Those last words made a big difference in what I saw out the window. Pilots actually held short!!!
Nice to see a controller on top of his game in one of these videos. Very well done!
(And a testament to the fact that not all controllers are bad, just because unsafe pratices and understaffing have made controller error more prevalent in the recent months.)
Kevin's footage really adds to this to show how things really happened. Great to see the collaboration!
Great edit! I like the way you combined video, graphics and ATC chatter all in one. Neat.
One of your best videos ever!
Neat, to be sure; But unfortunately, the accompanying video proves the situation was no more than a controller being extra cautious, and that the whole situation has been overdramatized here. No deviation was made by the pilot; She was well behind the hold short line when told to "Stop, stop, stop.". But, due to the precise timing and relative positions of the aircraft involved, the situation warranted vigilance and extra precaution, which the controller delivered on very astutely and professionally.
@@-108- never crossed the runway edgeline. did cross the hold short line.
Amazingly setup video. Thank you for doing this to us. Your production quality and finding video clips for us has been improving so much!
Much appreciated!
Thanks for your work.

Wow, what a video with the live video feed overlay and the animation together. Great work!
except the animation is a little off.
This is the best visual of a possible "incident" that I have seen. Super cool controller 😎 👌
This person right here, is an example of someone who LIKES and is GOOD at their job. That they have to retire soon, will be a loss to the ATC community,
So well managed, without any stress! Good job ATC guy!
Busy week for you, huh?
Very much indeed. Appreciate the support.

@@VASAviationkeep it up! Don’t get burned out. Appreicate your efforts.
Great job ATC, short and to the point. "Keylime STOP STOP STOP". (Edited: after a closer look, def looks like the crossed the hold short lines)
Better safe than sorry from ATC if they did hold short or were going to. But looks like they crossed.
Yeah they went past the line and got the number to call. Regardless of the radio call, still can't understand pulling onto a runway without looking.
@VASAviation I'd say the line is parallel with the runway running west from that black box to the right of the red sign. The sign is to the left of the plane on the pilot's side (some planes only have one pilot). Thanks for getting the ground side of this giving them the number to call.
I read that the FAA said that keylime did not cross the hold short line. Perhaps there is an ILS critical line that was seen that keylime passed?
@@aarondoty2210 According to the L.A. Times: “The jet never crossed the runway edge line,” the FAA said." Crossed the hold hhort, but not the runway, itself.
One of your best videos. Nice job.
It took long but it was worth it
This is a great real-time video! The ATC, as always, is phenomenal. Every time I think about flying private instead of commercial, I see a video like this and say nope. I'm good with the hassle of flying commercial. And, I'm not bashing private pilots.
@vasaviation Great job Victor. Awesome overlay of the video and the ATC comms.
Thanks!
This is textbook. He kept his composure, sounded like he wanted to give the southwest an immediate take off clearance, but when Key Lime crossed the threshold, he quickly interrupted himself, resolved the situation without any rudness, or anger, he kept the planes rolling, ones the Delta was gone, he just told them to continue crossing, so he could quickly resume his takeoffs, and he didn't waste any time acting out anger. Basically he just did his job. And only once the situation was resolved the Key Lime got their number. No unnecessary radio transmissions from either side, just handled extremely professionally.
Controller couldn't chastise key Like Captain - that's not his job - The controller himself said "possible pilot deviation." Whatever ATC says is heard by everyone on frequency. Let's get all the facts before we come to a conclusion.
@@tommytom6341 There must be a misunderstanding here -- this is exactly what I said.
Too many of these videos it happens that the controller will say stuff like "Hey, what are you doing, why did you continue, I told you to hold HS!" on frequency.
@@NeunEinser Sorry about that. I think I was replying to someone else but misplaced it.🙂
@@tommytom6341 Ah, no worries, that makes more sense :D
When key lime got across I was like, "Are they gonna get a number?".
Patience, patience. It's like getting on the schoolbus thinking they didn't notice, and Mom is at the door when you get home, "The principal called..."
@-108- you need to watch the 2:05 mark.
@@CommentBlockd I did. No deviation.
@-108- so tower was just overreacting when KL waltzed over the hold-short bar 😒😒😒

Great guy to work with.😊
Having video, animation and audio add to the clarity of your work. One of your best.
I have a hard time not re-seeing in my mind a particular Calvin and Hobbes Sunday strip when i watch these wonderfully presented ground traffic and take off events, especially with the STOP! STOP! STOP!
ohhh, they looked so much more closer on the camera
that was "safe ish"
The animation is a little off, on FR24 looks closer
Wow, this man is impressive!!
No 1 aviation channel so far. So cool thank you for videos 😍
Appreciate it!
Hard to tell from the angle if they still had time to stop or not, but great awareness in any case by the controller who undoubtedly knows the layout better than me. Great video by the way 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Question from an outsider: Is there an in-cabin protocol between the two pilots to make sure the pilot flying has the correct instruction on his mind as well? Or is it just assumed that the pilot flying should fully understand whatever was said and acknowledged by the pilot monitoring? What I mean, from the readback we know the pilot monitoring has the instruction right but she is not the one flying at that moment.
Gonzaga's offense is aggressive on the floor, and the runway.
Yeah, I just found out that the Gonzaga basketball team was chartering that plane
@@HeidiKohneit’s in the video thumbnail but not called out in the actual video or description for whatever reason. But I saw the article on the big sports sites and it was obvious which video it was going to be.

Great comms from the controller - perfect.
Thanks ATC. Angels in our headphones
LAX absolutely nailing it as usual. Fantastic controllers.
Very nice by the controller remaining calm and preventing that from being a much worse situation.
If you look closely on the video you can see the yellow flashing lights at the hold short bar. Looks like the airplane is almost completely past it.
They're going to need crossing gates, like railroads use. And some knuckleheads will taxi around them!
Bet pilots taking off weren't pleased to see Key Lime pie blissfully heading for their runway.
@@RetiredEEThat still doesn't always work. A Brightline train just hit a firetruck going around the gates in south Florida last week. It hits a car at least once a month.

Amazing job by the ATC. That is how you do your job. Doesn't even sound like it phased him.
Pilot DAL 471 : Bloody hell, not today mate 😂
I saw some people speculating that it might have been an ATC error but nope. ATC clearly instructed key lime 563 to hold short of 24L and they read it back. Pilot error.
The read back was not clear
That ATC was doing a great job!
Very good ATC. Resolutive and clear
Bravo, good on the controller being able to catch that multitasking👏👏
It just so happens that the Key Lime flight was carrying the Gonzaga men’s basketball team.
Hope somebody was listening.
Yes!! Give them a number!!!!
Notorious "Tator" working that ATC❤
Notorious is usually a bad thing though.
Yeah that was fault of the pilot, controller never told them to cross. Lucky nothing happened.
He actually clearly told them to hold short of 24L, which they acknowledged.
@@Renard380 When did that happen? The only communications I can find with LYM563 (Keylime) are after the STOP command. I can't even find a clearance to land in the audio. Got a time stamp?
@@aussiebloke609 It's in the video. Clear as day. ATC gives the hold short instruction, Keylime clearly acknowledges it.
@@methridge 1:29 is the turn left an HS 24L.
Landing clearance was likely shortly before the start of this video.
@@Renard380I'm pretty sure the problem here was crossing the hold short line without ATC's command.
I have been sort of quietly following this channel, loving it, am not working in aviation, but I have learned one thing: if the controller is telling you, that they have a number for you to call, you are going to have a bad day.
😅
Not excactly bad day, theyre not trying to be rude at you for your mistake, they try to clear things out
@michmart9261 I know, but still. Take Harrison Ford, when he landed on the taxiway. I am sure I would never want to hear someone telling me, when doing a mistake, that they have a number for me to call.
Not true, sometimes we are just trying to clarify to a pilot - we arent writing them up.
Boy what a year of near misses this year
Captain it’s only been a week
More like everyone's taking time off so they have more time to spam any kind of aviation misshap
But you are correct, it’s been a year of near misses.
The last week had unfortunately not only all near misses. 😢
@ those were single aircraft crashes, which were horrible, I am referring to airport runway traffic near misses.
No matter the cause, any crash and loss of life is devastating.
The system worked.
I heard that the Gonzaga men's basketball team was on that Key Lime! Goodness.
I wish all controllers were as sharp as this guy. He deserves an award.
We are
The controller’s quick thinking and situational awareness truly saved the day in this case.
Runway incursions are a serious issue in aviation and this case highlights the importance of vigilance. Thankfully, nothing happened here but it’s a reminder to prioritize clear communication, advanced systems and regular training to prevent future incidents. There’s just too much at stake.
Lucy! You got some splanin to do! They properly read back the hold short instruction then promptly crossed the hold short line 🤦 At least they didn’t cross the runway edge line and it looks like DAL was well airborne before the intersection.
Vast majority of Controllers are terrific
To me, the best part is ATC's lightning-fast judgement to say nothing to Delta, that going airborne and over is Delta's only safe option at this point.
The audio is in sync with the surface radar and footage so DAL471 was already airborne, still Key Lime had to hold. Not telling anything to Delta was a good call. They were wheels off, no need to call the pilots at that point. There was really no danger for any of them thanks DAL471 lifted off early but still...
I love this controller's sing-song voice haha
Reminds me a bit of a cattle auction.
He’s called (by Kevin, host of the Airline Videos Live channel) “Later Tater!”
“Later Tater” (ATC) handled that masterfully!
I believe they have runway incursion detection/alert set up at LAX. (Remember Juan mentioning it after the crash in Japan last year).
It should really be mandatory everywhere.
good timing with the video edited in. :)
Great Controller.
How ANY of you pilots or ATC ever do this will always amaze me. And I’m an astrophysicist.
Hey that’s N709DS!! Pretty sure that’s Steve Ballmer’s jet. Used to be a Global Express 👍🏾
it is his G650 for sure
Pilots of Key Lime can’t follow instructions. The controller said to hold short of the runway. Not cross it
The Embraer even read back the hold short clearance, I wasn't sure if they got confused on where to stop. I couldn't tell if they crossed the hold short line, did they? I'd assume they were at least very close.
Embraer? Thought ATC said Gulfstream

@@camward9293 i effed that up, one of the previous two crossing was a gulfstream

Great controller
Key Lime Pie. I want a slice now.
From the perspective of a pilot...I flew into LAX yesterday for the first time in a while and noticed the new taxiways to cross 24L(last time I was there, some were not usable). On the landing rollout we got the go ahead from ATC to cross 24L and noticed how short of a distance it is to slow down a 140,000 pound jet with MOMENTUM and stop on those taxiways. There isn’t a lot of distance compared to most other airports with high-speed exits, and I think that may have bitten the Key Lime crew even though their landing weight was a lot less.
Curious you would say that for landing on an outboard parallel with most exits leading to a runway crossing of the nearby inboard. Your expectation should be to stop and hold short, barring any crossing clearance received prior to exiting, and to plan your turnoff accordingly.
@@58icarus You are spot on. The point I was trying to illustrate is the distance from crossing the hold short line(after exiting 24R) and the hold short line of 24L is not as far as you would think. Most high-speed exits you can exit and continue to decelerate because there is room for it. A couple of these exits are new and have only been usable since this past Summer.
@@58icarus Exactly never cross a runway if you aren’t sure just stop and let the controller ask why you aren’t crossing or clarify with the controller.
At this point the days with close calls are the good ones.
I like this, animation and video.
Video's really hard to tell, but ATC probably had a better vantage point. From other comments, that controller doesn't seem to be one to panic, so if he called Stop, he likely had a legitimate concern. I'm guessing if KL wanted to counter any allegations, the airport has other cameras or they just roll the plane back to position on this camera and check. KL repeated the hold short properly, so they could argue ATC simply called at the moment they were stopping already. Regardless, better safe than sorry.
The hold bar has sensors
See, this is weird.... JFK and LAX are kind of equally busy, right? Yet, ATC at LAX is very very seldom rude, condecending or outright incompetent like at JFK.
You can attribute that to the culture of their locations.
It's the asshole NY mentality.
It's almost like LA and NYC have different vibes.
@@lastdance2099”vibes” shouldn’t dictate professionalism lol
@@lastdance2099 ATC should not have different vibes. Airplanes does not run smoothly on "vibes".
This wasn’t nearly as close as everybody seems to think it was. I saw another angle of this. The plane wasn’t even that far past the lights.
Landing on the Northside of LAX there is no taxiway in between the runways, unlike the south side. Easy to forget when you’re under a bit of pressure.
Heyyyy Later TATER 🙌🏾
Heyyy indeed
nice. yeah that STOP STOP STOP isn't that they were going to cross I bet, they were just running up on it quick and the controller was right on the ball. hats off to lax
It was the Gonzaga men's basketball team coming to town to play UCLA
Pro ATC
It did not even look close, and the pilot acknowledged to stop short of the runway.
It looked really close indeed
I'm wondering if the hold short line has an automated alarm when someone crosses it, or if the controller is watching from a closer camera. The tower is kinda far away to see this clearly. Good job.
The dreaded “phone number to call”. Ouch
Did the key lime plane cross over the spot where they were supposed to stop? It’s hard to tell from the video. The pilot who did the read back repeated the hold short of 24L instructions.
Definitely appears to have passed the hold short lines, judging on the red flashing runway sign. Controller was on the ball though as soon as the plane passed it, welcoming to see that.
As much as they’re saying it’s a near collision, from the video, it doesn’t even look that close. The delta plane had already gained a lot of altitude before the keylime plane could cross the runway. I think they just classify it as a close encounter because the runway was still in use but there wasn’t really a danger of them colliding, at least from the video.
God Mode activated ✅
This controller was astonishing
Good video
Can you please look at into the smoke on a swiss flight December 23th in Graz, Austria. One stewardess died from the smoke now.
The Gonzaga University basketball team was on Key Lime. Does ATC get a blocked shot?
Drawing the foul.
They were in fact past the hold short bars.
A runway incursion that wasn't ATC's fault. That makes a change. Great job by the controller.
I wouldn't say it wasn't ATC's fault. If you go back and listen, you'll notice that when giving the hold short instructions, ATC failed to say "Simon says".
