This is my favourite class of modern destroyer, and will be building the Flight IIA USS Bainbridge DDG-96 in this scale, in respect for her rescuing Captain Richard Phillips, from Somali pirates back in 2009. I also own two great reference books in assisting my build, Warship Pictorial series from Classic Warships, and Squadron/Signals book. Though, this does not show the physical build, this just helps fuel my desire to complete my version. Thank you for providing the world with your great talent. Take care, and all the best.
Hi, is the photo etch you used in building this USS Hopper the set provided in the kit or did you use a upgraded set like the White ensign USS Arleigh Burke class photo etch set?
@@JJModelMaking OK thanks. Was considering buying the White Ensign photo etch upgrade but it's more expensive than the entire Trumpeter USS Hopper kit that arrived today.
Just ordered this model, it will be my first since I was a kid. I wanted to clarify your steps: Paint, Gloss, Decals, Gloss, Weather, Final Varnish is that correct? Can that process be achieved with brushes? Thanks!
Hi Michael, yes, the order is spot on! You can paint with brushes of course but would suggest a rattle can varnish - it will make things so much easier for you! Best of luck with it!
Thank you very much! quality wise, it's not 100% flawless but not far off, all panel lines well scribed, hardly any flash. If you shop around, you should be able to get it at a very good price.
Brennnan Bauer A good first step is to consider which scale you want to build your model in. Ships come in 1/350 like this one, or 1/700. Not all ships, but as a general rule of thumb. I'd say either this Hopper kit or maybe the Oliver Hazard Perry would be a good place to start. Is there one kit you've got your eye on?
Here's a link to the unboxing of the Tico I built, it's part of the build playlist, might give you a feel as to what's in store... th-cam.com/video/2TXFpO8dwI4/w-d-xo.html
Good choice Sir! I used two main colours for the main hull, Tamiya Sky Grey and a medium grey for the decks. As a waterline kit you don't even have to attach the lower hull, but if you do, it needs painting. I used 70% flat red and 30% flat brown on the Hopper
Can anyone tell me where i can find pre-built U.S Navy ships for sale? I'm new to all this, and wanting to start a collection. Please any help would be appreciated.
David Hliva It will be very hard finding prebuilt model kits unless you get lucky on eBay. I believe there is a range of die cast ships available though with limited ship choice
I'm glad to see the hopper back!
Excellent build James photo etch really adds to the realism
Thank you - it certainly does make all the difference!
My dad recently bought the same ship, I can’t wait to build it
Fantastic! He'll really like it I'm sure!

JJ, I like your production. Well planned and inspiring. On to the next ship!
Jeremy Tan Thank you Jeremy!
Hi! Do you have any close-up photos of the painted Hopper? I am painting now and am having trouble seeing the colors in the video. Thanks!
Looking very nice
kim Andersen Thanks Kim!

The photoetch actually came with the model, was quite surprised!

Great looking model. You did a fine job! I'm not familiar with that model maker. How was the quality of the kit? Regards, Solomon

Sailed two Westpacs on a Spruance.
What's a good entry point into ship building? I have plenty of airplane and tank building experience but ships are new to me.

JJ Model Making actually funny enough I had my eye on the hazard Perry. I have a soft spot for anything below a capital ship and above a life boat lol
There's always the Ticonderoga class cruisers - a little larger, less fiddly? Or a trimaran hulled Coronado?
JJ Model Making might have to check out the Ticonderoga.

Looking for replacement instructions or where to downlad instructions for this model...can anyone help?

@@JJModelMaking ok thank you very much hopefully mine will turn out well
Can you list the paint colours you use and the brand of each.
I can't quite remember all the colours I'm afraid, built this a few years ago now but remember that the hull colour is Tamiya sky grey
@@JJModelMaking thanks mate
Very cool channel! Subbed.
Thank you!
Kaiser class???

you made too much rust... and maybe, dirty less.. still a good job!
I was thinking the same. There's no way a US navy ship would be allowed to get that grotty
My opinion should have toned down the weathering. A bit too much
