    I agree with the too much fan art point, a lot of artist want to be know for their artwork and not just the fan art

      i hope to better learn about character design for my own characters by doing fan art but this point does concern me

    Agreed with everything!! Drawing FanArt is super fun. A good way to integrate your characters and make the shift to original art, I think, is to have fan OCs, and just slowly add them, and eventually someone will ask, “Who’s that?” And then you’re in XD

    I really felt it when you talked about the "being known for a specific type of fanart" kind of thing.
    I used to exclusively draw fanart for Winx club / art in the Winx style and built a following that way, which was fine because I just wanted to draw my ocs, improve my skills and vibe- but when I got the idea to turn this little roleplay thing I had going on with my friends into an actual story with its own worldbuilding and stuff, people kept asking me whether I was writing a "Winx club story" or whether I would feature any of the Winx characters or whether "oc so and so" was related to "Winx character so and so", etc. etc.- and at one point I couldn't take it anymore and decided to move pages.
    My following is now really small, but I have a lovely little community who follow me because they either like my art, my story or me as a person and I'm all the more happy for it ^^

      god yeah that can be so frustrating ;; i’m sorry, i know that can feel super demoralizing - but i’m really glad that you found a community to support you for you, and enjoy all of the art that you make, fanart or original!!

    Its perfectly fine to sell any piece of art you make. If someone else came up with the original design he should be proud that people replicate it.

    Great video as always!! I used to do really well on tumblr gaining an audience with fanart but then that was literally all they engaged with. Anytime i posted something original i went from around 100 notes to 0, and even worse my only stuff that ever kept making rounds were crappy homestuck comics 😣

    • @DuchessCelestia
      @DuchessCelestia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      ahhh thank you!! BRUH what a mood tho. my original art would get 5 notes on tumblr and a shitty animal crossing meme doodle got 3,000 and that was about when i gave up on tumblr lmfao

    plus if u have art block ad you don't feel like drawing a scene directly from the og media, then there are bound to be plenty of fan prompts and inspirations and stuff :) as someone who draws both fanart and writes fanfic I know firsthand fandoms LOVE giving people stuff to work with and then seeing the end results

    Halo! Just want to clarify something :> cuz i've seen famous artists like shibaruirui sell their fanart of jujutsu kaisen and attack on titan in their own style. Does that mean it's okay to sell? :00 luv ur videos btw! 🤩🫶

    Okay so Finnish people in case you are wondering if it is okay to sell fanart here, I dont think so. I was trying to figure it out but tbh no one seems to know for sure. But the articles and comments I found seemed all agree that making fanart is okay but selling it is illegal

    Another point that I thought of for buying fan-content is to not support the original creator. I love the Harry Potter series, but the creater can kiss a dementor. I still buy stuff from the series (I have an impressive collection of HP socks) , but only from other sources.

    i only draw fanart (@bubblerexs on intsa hhh shameless plug) because i dont really like oc’s but i totally agree with the last point
    as a jojo fan i draw a decent bit of jojo fanart and other things too- like i try not to do one thing because i dont want people to follow me for only jojo- its so common to see accounts that only post jjba, and when they post unrelated content they get far less engagement. i always follow for peoples style- like i found an artist i like through a ship they drew that i ADORE (caejose) but their entire account is mostly aot- i dont like aot but i followed anyway (yes i find it boring isnt my taste awful 😎)
    also i found someone else i ended up being really good friends with drew and ships caejose too but they’re mostly a final fantasy/jojo part 1 fan.
    moral of the story: follow for their art, not what they draw- im lucky enough to have a decently supportive following of people who like my colouring a lot :^)
    to me drawing fanart isnt a burden since im like 14 & i love drawing the things im a fan of- but i try really hard to try never hit a content lock. i’d definetly get bored+stressed very easily doing that-
    tbh i just watched this video because i like your content and video style, definitely not gonna sell my stuff anytime soon- just wanted to leave a comment since this is an interesting topic and i LOVE fanart. i find it so weird when people say they cant really interpret characters that arent theirs, then im reminded i cant really interpret any ideas that are my own 😅
    great video as always c:

      first of all i just checked out your art, and omg it’s so cute!! i love the colours!!
      that’s an awesome story, and i’m really grateful that you shared it, especially for other viewers to read - fanart can be a great way to connect and grow an audience if you do it right, and success stories with it like that are fantastic!!

    I think if it’s a large IP like Nintento characters, and you’re selling fanart of it, go ahead, they’re not losing any money.
    But if someone was to take my oc, draw it and sell it i’d be put off, especially as i’m not currently profiting of my own ocs/creations.
    I feel in regards to small creators and their own personal creations, no one else should be profiting of their creations.

    • @shirendjorgee9320
      @shirendjorgee9320 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nintendo is one of the IPs that’s the most aggressive about copyright, so I wouldn’t actually recommend that.

    If I have built a bigger amount of audience for mostly my fanart all the time and changed the type of content I made which could cause a decrease of followers, how should I fix this problem to get to do another content, which is about original artworks? I've been learning things about social media marketing involving artworks, and I wanna learn more

    7:55 makes me think of my pastor saying we’re going to financially support another church’s children’s home because otherwise we should be willing to open our own. There’s a need so either fill it out support those that do.
