  • 2022 Winnebago Spirit or Minnie Winnie 22R First Impressions on Drive Home. Gas mileage/ Decibel Levels/ Drivability etc. I picked this up at La Mesa RV in Florida and drove it home to Colorado. It drove pretty good for what it is. I will be doing a more detailed walk-around soon. But this is a collection of my initial thoughts in the first few hundred miles.

I am looking at a 2023 22R Spirit built on a F-450 chassis. This will be our first RV. My wife and I usually prefer boon docking/dispersed camping and the clearance and departure angle has me wondering if this is a good choice. Class B's don't have enough living space and I like the fact that the Spirit doesn't have a slide and could be taken on a month long road trip. Not sure what to do about this other that spend maybe 10K for a lift kit. As I said, we are new to owning a RV. Is there something I may not be taking into account? Great video by the way. Thanks

Hey John! I used to have a Class B. I switched due to room as well. The class C ir that bill but then didn’t have the clearance or 4x4. You can do a lift. There’s a company called Weldtec that does them. Or I went all out and completely modified mine. I did 4x4 and lift, winch, solar, lithium. I figured as soon as I get a lift I’ll end up somewhere needing 4x4. I have videos here of the final product. UJoint Colorado can do the conversion for you. I am selling mine if you are looking for one thats built.

@@iAmMarchal Thanks for the quick response Marchal. I've seen a video from Weldtec on TH-cam for a lift. I'd be happy with at least that for where I'd want to go. I also watched one about 7 improvements you should do for a class C-larger sway bars, air bags, camber spacers, etc. I have never driven a class C and heard they can be a challenge to drive in certain situations with the stock under carriage. I wonder if the new 2023 chassis has any improvements to improve handling. Did you modifications void the warranty from the factory? I would consider your RV depending on the price and options. Could you tell my why you are selling? We could exchange info if you didn't want to post here. Let me know and thanks

@@1john52 They drive really bad factory. You should test drive some to get an idea. Then if you ever drive mine you’ll know. I bought mine new in Florida and drove to Colorado. It was pretty white knuckle especially when semi trucks pass.
Sway bars would definitely help. As would airbags to balance load. Not sure on camber spacers. I have never used those.
The 2023 are unlikely to have any improved driving manners.

@@iAmMarchal You have a super cool, functional rig and with all the upgrades it is a fair price. Sounds like you never had a chance to really use it. By the way what is LMTV (posted as a reason for selling)? It is a bit more than I would use too being happy with suspension upgrades. And I appreciate your time for questions. The rig i looked at is in Marysville, Washington and it was somewhat unexpected since we were looking for a used B+ and were willing to spend around 80K. So far from 135K MSRP, with the little negotiating, he would let us have it for around 125K and said that wouldn't be a fixed price either. There are some options, thermal windows, 450 chassis, leatherette seat coverings. We weren't looking to buy new but reconsidered. Did you get a better deal in Florida? I looked in a general northwest area but couldn't find anything similar to the 22R. A lot to think about and I want to do some homework and of course a test drive before committing. I'll keep your unit in mind if I come across an interest.

@@1john52 I bought when there was no supply. I just happened to find one someone backed out of. It so happened to be in FL.
Definitely do your research. Add the things you’re going to want on it and that will lead you to the right solution.
125 seems a bit high for a stock one. Especially if you’re going to lift it 5-10k, Solar 5k, and a couple things here and there. It will add up fast.
You may consider starting with a used one with a good price and then building it out. You will end up with more equity? Since these things don’t change that much.
The LMTV you can view on my TH-cam Channel. It’s a military Vehicle. I’m building a camper on the back of it.

Great review, you covered the driving experience of the rv. To enjoy your drive a little more, look into the hellwig rear stableizer track bar. Works excellent with passing semi or cross winds. Safte t plus front steering stabilizer shock, excellent upgrade. If you can I would run Bilstein shots & Michelin LTX to complete it. Made a huge difference in the way my older 22ft. Drives. Definitely the fist two, you'll be very impressed. Enjoy, Happy new year

Not only Winnebago has the buttons on the right, but they also have the largest infotainment screen available compared to the ones we've been looking the in same category (24', no slides). Looks to be better build quality compared to the Thor and Forest River offerings. It's a shame about the suspension. We're doing our research now and it's rare to find driving videos of owners of the smaller class Cs. We're torn between these and the Forest River Cross Trail 21XG on the Transit platform.

    • @iAmMarchal
      @iAmMarchal  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Cuban Rider! Glad the video was useful. As far as quality is concerned I think they’re all a bit sub par. If the winnie is quality then the other have to be truly horrible. I’ve had leaks, strips of trim falling out, bad screw jobs, and it’s made of all the same particle board as others. But I feel like that is the industry standard across all these RV’s. Except maybe Airstream and Oliver.
The 21XG on the transit looks good in pics. Haven’t seen in real life. I’ve seen the Winnebago Echo though and I think it’s similar.
I like the Ford chassis though because of it’s upgradability. I’ve recently converted mine to 4x4 and lifted it to fix the suspension issues. This is easier done on this versus Transit I believe. I’ve got some videos on the process here. It made all the difference.
Either way I say buy what you like and be ready to fix a couple of things and you will be fine.

I look forward to the video where you show you share your experience with it being lifted.
I have a class A RV and I definitely want a smaller unit with no slide. The main reason I have not pursued a Class C is because of how low they are to the ground.
Perhaps you could share an estimated cost, as well as your experience…
I never knew you could have a Class C lifted to be honest with you. Maybe that’s just in Phoenix… Perhaps I’d have to travel to get this done.
I wanted to add that your videos are so thorough! Do you have the ability to speak that’s very calm. You take your time and explain so the viewer can really learn!
Thank you for sharing your information! Thanks for taking the time to make your videos! I loved the sound decibel dB video! 👏

      Hi Sunrise!
I love the class a’s. They are huge though. For a certain kind of camping definitely worth it.
Upgraded from a B to C myself. B was rather smaller. The C seemed like the perfect size. But I needed to “b” it a bit. My revel was kind of “offroad” capable. And I want this to be similarish. The lift and 4x4 will help with this.
Issue is supply chain. Everything is running 6 months lead times minimum. Total cost looks to be around 30k. Which isn’t awesome. But hoping the final product is. 1 more month till I get it in the shop. Then 2 weeks for them to work it.
Working on a video walkthrough that shows the suspension stock it’s really bad.
Ps. Thank you for the compliment. I am glad that these videos are helpful. It’s people like you that I do it for. Reading your message seriously makes it all worthwhile. Thanks for being awesome.

How is the power from the 7.3 gasser? I’m assuming it’s pretty responsive in a relatively small Class C that is probably nowhere near GVWR.

No issues with power at all. Even driving grades at elevation here in CO it performs awesome. I also have a f350 6.7 diesel so I was comparing it to that while driving.

I havve a 2021 22M - A little heavier/longer on the 350. Been averaging 10.5 on the highway (between 60-65 MPH). Had a class B before so took a little adjusting but pleased so far. I wish I had the volume controls on the sterering wheel - nice addition in 22. The biggest advantage so far are the large tanks. Can easily go three days with one dump vs the B was almost everyday for my wife and I. Really opens up campground availability - dont need full hook - up only electric. Good video!

Hi Michael! I see we both come from the Class B and upgraded for similar reasons. I'm still happy with mine but looking forward to get the suspension work done. I think it will make driving it a bit more pleasant. And safer. How are you finding driving yours? Ps. I had a Winnebago Revel and it was quite tippy as well. I hadn't got around to doing the suspension when I sold it.

Woohoo! No one ever gives driving impressions on RVs. Your video is a rarity. Thank you. 1) I would be interested to hear about gas mileage after some engine break in. 2) That is quite a change from a Revel. Reason? 3) It seems that everyone with a Class C has to add a steering stabilizer, Bilstein shocks, larger stabilizer bars and get an alignment because they all drive horrible. Your thoughts? Finally, no outdoor shower or solar preparation for a his Winnebago?

    • @iAmMarchal
      @iAmMarchal  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Mark. Glad you found this useful! 1. Still ranging in that 9 MPG area. 2. Yes. Revel was great but not a lot of room for storage or living. Almost went with the Echo when it came out but converting those to 4x4 seemed like it would be challenging. Plus I really wish it was built on a Ford E series chassis. Just like the look. 3. You absolutely have to add all that. I have a follow up video which shows you the lack of suspension on them. It’s pretty bad. And that’s before adding water etc
My idea is to add a few things to it. 4x4 and a lift next month and then solar and other comfort things.

There was solar and stablizers added to my 22 22M (bought used). I have never driven a truck before but found the handling above average when I drove it back from Sacramento to Minneapolis. As Mark noted - it does move around on a windy day and trucks passing. I read before I purchased Ford made improvements to the suspension when they came out with the godzilla engine.. Honestly - had a winnebago travato before and felt this was more stable due to the dual rear tires.
