    notes:
    -don't push out forcefully, instead let go (imagine balloon slowly losing air)
    -shoulders, neck and jaw have to be relaxed
    1st: 15secs
    then 2nd: 25 secs

    I played brass instruments in band, college band warm ups were the deep 360 inhales with thirty-two count descending to four count "TSS" releases. I have played the trumpet and baritone for eight years now... I never realized the fundamentals I used in band would help me learn to sing; a dream I have had since I was five :D Thank you so much Eric!!!

    Thank you for this. I'm getting back into singing on my worship team and our leader and I both know I needed a little bit more help since I haven't sung in a worship setting for over 15 years when I was in the youth band. I also was diagnosed with COPD due to some bad choices in my youth. The breathing exercises are helping. I've never been shown this and I know it's basic fundamentals. I'm glad the Lord brought me to you.

    That's a very good thing. We don't want the upper body (shoulders, neck, jaw) to tense, but your back muscles are designed to aid your diaphragm. Allow - DON'T force - yourself to feel that lower back muscular contraction every time, and you will notice your voice getting fuller/freer ;)

  • @ericarceneaux
    @ericarceneaux  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's not necessarily something that you're doing "wrong". Really, it's a matter of practice; your body has to adjust to controlling air this way. Remember to let your throat and jaw relax; try to let the rib cage do most of the work (being aided by the abdomen and back). Ultimately, you want the quality of the stream to be consistent and even. It may take a couple days to master, but it always happens eventually... In fact, by the time you read this, you may already have it down :D

    Tip for getting to 15 seconds. Keep your tongue placed in front of your bottom teeth. It's really easy to have your tongue placed in between the top and bottom of your teeth with the "TS" sound, but keeping the tongue prevents obstruction and let's the air flow freely.

    Hola Eric, is nice to see someone that teaches similarly, I love your videos and advice. I teach my students the SSS and time them as well, the difference is that I let them breathe as far as they can and write the secs. down, then the following week we try to surpass that number. I even make 'competitions' with my younger ones. Keep up the good work!

    I like this exercise for the challenge. Take those 25 seconds slowly and note the position of the jaw and the shoulders (I guess we get used to doing that from practicing the 30-degree breath). Thank you.
    Last of such comments: My mother turned her sleeping infants every hour for lovely, flat, symmetrical ears and taught her daughters to do the same. Excellent.
    Thank you for the exercise. What is the maximum number of seconds to aim for? Oh, breathing before trills! Logical. Thank you very much 👍.

  • @youngjoshiee
    @youngjoshiee 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    you're probably hissing out too much air, you want it to be enough to be audible, but not loud at all. another thing, remember your shoulders, neck, jaw, tongue, and throat (larynx) are all relaxed, but you should feel your stomach, ribs, and sides, maybe even your back pelvis and chest a little bit, but don't let the air just come out. i know im not eric but i think i watched enough of his videos to help out a little :) go to his website for more free videos too

  • @catburitto1347
    @catburitto1347 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh wow I've been doing it wrong for so long because I would hold the breath in my throat and my tongue would be controlling how much air leaves my body, every time I would finish this exercise my tongue and jaw would feel sooo tense. But then I rewatched this vid and you said that the throut, jaw, etc should be relaxed and then I realized what I was doing wrong. For anyone who is confuse I believe the way you know you should be doing it right is that if you hold your breath you should feel the pressure in the abdomen not the throut and to test if you are correct you should be able to speak while you are holding your breath. If you can't speak then you are holding your breath in your throut. Once you know that your breath is in your abdomen/diaphragm area and you do your hiss, the amount of air escaping shouldn't be controlled by the tongue, if anything your mouth area should be relaxed except for when the tongue is slightly touching the roof of your mouth to make the hissing noise. Your abdomen on the other hand should not be locked, as you let the air escape you should feel and see you abdomen slowly retract back in. Your abdomen muscles are the ones controlling how much air is let out. This excersise strengths your abdomen muscles to be able to hold themselves up and not collapse on the air so that doesn't escape. But always remember NEVER lock your abdomen because that will lock the rest of your body including your throat. Your abdomen should be moving (retracting as the air is released). Sometimes it might feel like your abdomen is locked but in reality it's just the pressure on your abs. Closely analyse how your body works and make sure you dont feel pain (that is not a good sign if you do) I hope this helped anyone who was confused, and if I'm wrong about anything feel free to correct me, these are just my observations after experimenting with this excersise. Good luck everyone.
