I only really got into the scifi genre in the past year so I still consider myself somewhat of a newbie. I'd recommend trying out books labelled as "space opera", because those tend to focus more on the adventure, rather than the hard science and technical details. Like other commenters, I would recommend you read The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. It's a super cute space opera that is really easy to understand and felt like reading a contemporary story set in space.
1984 is the sci-fi book I will always recommend, it's a classic but honestly you just can't out this book down, and even after reading it you can't stop thinking about it
I never read Sci-fi, but I read The Martian and Illuminae in the past 2 months :) And I loved both, so I would like to read more. Ready Player One sounds very interesting. Across the Universe sounds a lot like the movie with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence.

I would recommend Sleeping Giants and Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel - it's told in a similar format to Illuminae. And its always super controversial but Ender's Game was the best sci-fi book I read as teen. It was a game changer for me!
I would strongly recommend Red Rising by Pierce Brown. It's a fantastic SciFi trilogy but it has aspects of mythology and romance and it's just so good!

I'm currently reading These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner and I'm really loving it. This is a space adventure where the spaceliner that the main characters are on is destroyed and they have to survive on a new planet. This is a completed trilogy.
I LOVED Ready Player One and Dark Matter was my book club's pick a few months ago! I HIGHLY recommend The Red Rising trilogy if you haven't read it. It's like The Hunger Games meets Game of Thrones set in space. It's one of my favorites!
I would also consider the Lunar Chronicles to be a sci-fi series, so you've read more than you thought! 😊 As for recommendations... I don't know if you have watched Star Trek at all....but I don't think you need to know much about it to read this...but try 'Redshirts' by John Scalzi....the book is hilarious and meta. I really enjoyed it.

I recommend Century Rain by Alastair Reynolds. And Lost Stars by Claudia Gray. Also if you don't like the science talk then I don't think sci-fi is the genre for you. Most of the stories and worlds are formed around the "muddled down" scientific theories mentioned in the books so its important to at least try to understand the concept. I'd say give it another shot and really try to understand it. It seems the ones you suggested are soft/fantasy sci-fi.
For sci-fi, I'd check out the books of Ursula K. Le Guin. She writes fantasy too, but a lot of her stories drift into sci-fi territory. Not really the overly science-y kind, but more like futuristic and otherworldly.

If you like the Star Wars movies they have a ton of books set in the world with people you know already that are interesting. The 100 book series is a quick read though only maybe 33% takes place in space and it has some dystopian elements. Starfall was a really quick read, think space pirates. Also The Host was amazing, good ol invasion story... Those are all i can think of off the top of my head lol.
Never see "The Legend of Zero" series by Sara King on any of these lists/recommendations. Anyone looking for a great hard sci-fi books to read needs to check this series out. You won't be disappointed.
I'm surprised you haven't read the Lunar Chronicles! definitely recommend that series. another interesting YA sci fi is Megan Shephard's The Cage. for a twisted read check out George RR Martin's The Sandkings! and for a classic...I definitely recommend Acrona by Anne McCaffrey!
I felt it was a good mixture of both. but definitely more sci-fi with the genetic manipulation, cyborgs, and bouncing between the earth and the moon. It's more of a soft sci-fi whereas The Martian is a hard sci-fi because it focuses on the science.
Clearly I haven't read that many sci-fi books😂😂😂 the only one I can think of is ready player one but I wasn't a fan of it (probably because I'm not a gamer at all and never have been. and then I read a book all about video games😂😂 I love the 80's but I basically got like 3 references. so yeah no clue why I picked it up now I think of it) I dooo really love tv shows and movies that have to do with space and aliens and stuff like that. OH I HAVE READ THE HOST. still haven't started cinder whooops
Lian banks culture books any of them. Alystair Reynolds revelation space is a good start. I just got hip to vaughn heppners lost starship series bingeable fun. Joshua dazalle has a battlestar Galactica esk series on here expansion wars which I also liked. Then there is all the classics lots of audio books on you tube for those Lary Niven to Asimov to that one guy who dreams of electric sheep.
Please consider reading "A Glimpse Beyond The Aether" by Susan Frances Pegasus Publishers. It is about a world with irrefutable knowledge about what happens when we die. Science Fiction / Romance Heavy on the romance

I've also read the Across the Universe trilogy and loved it, and Illuminae! I haven't read Gemina yet, kinda dreading the long wait for the 3rd book Obsidio! lol I haven't read much sci-fi yet either. Oh I did read Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray and loved it!

If you like the Star Wars movies they have a ton of books set in the world with people you know already that are interesting. The 100 book series is a quick read though only maybe 33% takes place in space and it has some dystopian elements. Starfall was a really quick read, think space pirates. Also The Host was amazing, good ol invasion story... Those are all i can think of off the top of my head lol.

I'm surprised you haven't read the Lunar Chronicles! definitely recommend that series. another interesting YA sci fi is Megan Shephard's The Cage.

I felt it was a good mixture of both. but definitely more sci-fi with the genetic manipulation, cyborgs, and bouncing between the earth and the moon. It's more of a soft sci-fi whereas The Martian is a hard sci-fi because it focuses on the science.
You should check out The 5th Wave trilogy. I really enjoyed it

Clearly I haven't read that many sci-fi books😂😂😂 the only one I can think of is ready player one but I wasn't a fan of it (probably because I'm not a gamer at all and never have been. and then I read a book all about video games😂😂 I love the 80's but I basically got like 3 references. so yeah no clue why I picked it up now I think of it) I dooo really love tv shows and movies that have to do with space and aliens and stuff like that. Lian banks culture books any of them. Alystair Reynolds revelation space is a good start. I just got hip to vaughn heppners lost starship series bingeable fun. Joshua dazalle has a battlestar Galactica esk series on here expansion wars which I also liked. Then there is all the classics lots of audio books on you tube for those Lary Niven to Asimov to that one guy who dreams of electric sheep.
