HILTON HEAD, S.C. (Tribune News Service) - On a hot and humid late Friday afternoon, Pfc. Dalton Beals needed medical attention during the brutal final training exercises at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island known as the Crucible. But he wasn’t the only one. In five frantic 911 calls for help that Beaufort County received on June 4 between 3:39 p.m. and 5:14 p.m., at least two additional Marines also were suffering from heat injuries, records show. They survived. Beals, a 19-year-old from of Pennsville, N.J., could not be revived.

@@flanagamer they’re all easy AF. People fail the same reasons they fail usmc boot camp. Can’t ruck, can’t run, body breaks because they’ve never done anything physically challenging until now. Easier than sit-ups) 27 minute 3 mile Army min: 42 push-ups 53 sit-ups(hands interlocked behind head) 15:54 2 mile. Marines give over 11 minutes more to run an extra mile.

if that's the same marine, I was stationed there at kaneohe bay with 2/3, 1995 - 1996, believe it was marine corps birthday/ball that day, they told us after lunch, was sad news for sure, we did a lot of boots and utes runs on the beach into the ocean then continue running soaked and they ran us up mountains, tough training out there
The Marine was with 1/12…I watched the whole thing. The platoon went on a moto run for the Marine Corps birthday…nothing crazy…just to the McDonalds and back. They got back to the parking lot and he dropped. Turns out he had a blood clot and actually was complaining about numbness in his foot earlier in the week. Sad because he was so young…19 if I remember correctly.
I talked to a retired army General at my usual gym before. He said that we need to treat our warriors like athletes with proper conditioning and recovery, these "traditions" get outdated and leave our warriors damaged

I will forever have this young man in my heart. Prayers and Love to his family
I was in his company, & probably interacted with him at one point… but I eventually went home after my brother was hit & killed by a train in April. What an Erie thought
I don’t know… I was in platoon 2044, on the bottom floor of the barracks. He was a floor or two above me, & while it is incredibly likely we interacted/saw each other, I would not remember him out of 800+ other recruits in echo company. In his picture, he seems to be in good shape… I met another recruit while in rsp that had a heart attack during the same crucible exercise, it’s not uncommon to get hurt/have a medical emergency during training. You just better hope it doesn’t happen, or you will be held there for 7 months up to a year until you fully recover… training will quickly turn into prison.
@@zachparker1468 ok. It just seems odd to me that a kid that was described as athletic would die during bootcamp. I guess it happens, but still, there must have been something that went horribly wrong for that to happen.

Rest in peace young man, thank you for your service!😊🤗❤

The army’s minimum standards are harder than the marines. The marines max is harder than the army’s.
Marine min: 3 chin-ups or pull-ups(individual can decide)
53 crunches(arms are across the chest. Easier than sit-ups)

RIP Hard Charger and may God ease the pain in your Families Hearts. Semper Fi 2bn 3rd Marines!!!
if that's the same marine, I was stationed there at kaneohe bay with 2/3, 1995 - 1996, believe it was marine corps birthday/ball that day, they told us after lunch, was sad news for sure, we did a lot of boots and utes runs on the beach into the ocean then continue running soaked and they ran us up mountains, tough training out there
Yeah unfortunately freak things do happen and just like with anything else, sometimes the heart just can't handle anymore stress and stops.
So heartbreaking, so very sorry, still praying for the family... should not have happened...my son went through the recruit training this summer and I had such fears but I was assured they took extreme precaution during the heat this year. I was in his company, & probably interacted with him at one point… but I eventually went home after my brother was hit & killed by a train in April. What an Erie thought
was the kid crazy out of shape? do you know anything more about him?
He might’ve had an underlying heart condition that he wasn’t aware of… many people lie while getting recruited into the military, & MEPs often glosses over it as they don’t have the manpower to do a background check on the thousands of people enlisting each month.

“The more you sweat in training the less you bleed in combat” is the real saying, but anyway his training didn’t do him any good since it killed him. Honestly it’s like telling someone to change their oil often after a car crash.
@@blakedavis2447 except in the case of Marines…
You are accurate in your correction of the training maxim, but for Marines, a more appropriate maxim might be, “The more we (fire team, squad, platoon, etc.) sweat in training, the less we bleed in combat.
The death of an individual in the training of his team should be scrutinized and assessed. But if the overall risk of such training is a benefit to the team, a better analogy would be to find the failure point of a car in order to make it more survivable in the event of a crash.

Strengthen the training by adequately feeding the recruits. Bad enough to consume nasty MREs in the first place much less limit the marine's caloric intake. This was a good-sized, well-muscled kid; probably undernourished.
