It really is easy wants you learn how to plant yourself like his showing you. Every one getting into it makes that mistake by not have that flip line set away from the tree comfortably. I done it guys I know did it. Once you learn the things you have to and showed properly its easy after that and it's going to be fun for you and you'll love. Even if your not doing trees and as a hobby climbing. Just have to take your time and learn it the right way. There's times I go up just to sit in the canopy and look at the scenery
Your video was very useful, I am a homeowner who started trimming my own trees, and if it had not been for this type of training videos I would have never had felt comfortable cutting anything! Thank you!
Well that was absolutely the content that I needed to hear. It was clear and concise. I'm gathering information to make my first climb at 60. Because I love trees and looking for cheap thrills. Lol great content and thank a lot
Man...this brings back great memories. I remember giving my first tutorial and talking about the harness, spikes, fliplines, lifelines and the importance of having a general understand for physics. You did a great job man, just make em understand, ultimately, it's healthy to fully respect the trade. And make sure they understand respect means having a considerable amount of fear. But fear is an excellent motivator.
This just popped up on my feed so I gave it a watch and from another fellow climber you know what you're talking about and can swing round that tree on them spikes. Good shit man.
Great video. You kinda look and sound like Johnny Knoxville but way more manly. You make it look so easy. A true pro. Thnx for this informative video. Good stuff, man.
Thank you for the video. ..very respectfully appreciated . Can you direct me to more information on setting up a life line and whatever I need to know that would he helpful . thank you again. great job
Great video. You can really explain climbing well. And I Iike that you emphasize safety equipment and that it is good to use it. Way too many climbing cowboys work totally unsafely.
Fantastic video! Added it to my favorites 😉 Could you also make a video about spikeless climbing? For when you don’t want to damage the tree while pruning?
Great vid man. Thank you. Very informative. Any chance you could post your climbing system please. I’m most curious how it’s tending itself and advancing itself. Thank you.
Everything is a risk and any height off the ground requires safety. I operate on safety first. If safety comes first it sets guide lines for about everything. Operate at a height I feel comfortable to learn gear usage. That makes so much sense.
Great video and full of instruction! I was just wondering if you would mind going over your lifeline setup in more detail. Hard to tell, but it looks like a prusic cord & pulley but i cannot tell much else.....has to be more to it. Thx in advance
I work for a tree company that works for pge and we always use spikes even for just trimming. There's not a single worker who doesn't use them much faster and safer. But everybody's taught differently
thanks for the very usefull video. i got a practical question about the resin or tar on the rope. i still find myself in very unpleasant situations during the jobs that my climbing device is jamming when i need it the most. i have been climibng single rope with a isc d4 and a handascender combined with a pulley and have been climbing with a spiderjack 3. both of the belay devices will get stuck and you are not or are hardly able to come back to the ground. have you ever expeianced this? and do you have some tips? i have tried a pruissk which works oke but also gets annoying afther a while because of the resin. like to hear from you.
I know that some guys use pole gaffs and some use tree gaffs. Im in michigan by the way. And i was wondering what most people use because im new to climbing and would like to know what would work best.
I like the idea of the loop runner+karabiner onto rope bridge as additional location stability....IF the length is right. But at 10mins into the video I began to feel a bit worn down as I'm being hectored for the tenth time about the need for using spikes. So suggest fewer repetitions (of everything).
Hey man, great video. I have a question, that I am yet to find the answer to. How is it, that when you are chunking out a stem, you can continue to climb with you lifeline? I've seen videos where guys do it, but I can not see the system well enough. Because of this I chunk down with only my bukstrap, but I agree, that having the lifeline is crucial.
Hey just wondering do you really believe on throwing your line in every tree before you go up it?? I had this foreman when I first started climbing he used to tell me if you can't go up a tree without your line then stay out of the tree, then when I started getting better and into bigger trees I liked to throw my line above me a couple branches to feel safe and he would still yell at me for doing that he finally got mad enough at me that he made me climb this poplar that was about 75 to 80 feet without my line, there was a tree close enough that he was in and took my line up with him and wouldn't let me have it till my tree was skinned up one side and I was done and needed to come down, so now even when my gut tells me to tie in I don't bc that's how he wants it done, is that safe or am I just over thinking when I'm up there
Im getting into trimming my own trees. I can do low things easy but I need to get climbing gear. I used to do ground work for a tree trimmer. One more reason those nubs are unsafe... I once watched the trimmer cut off one of those nubs it fell 40 feet. Hit another nub causing it to change trajectory and it hit one of the ground people in the neck. Severe injury. Lesson don't work under a climber that refuses to use spikes.
I hope you can get at me one day and explain some of the physics that you’re talking about because I literally cut myself out of the tree six months ago and I have been missed trusting a lot of qualities of what I need to do for my livelihood to make money
Brother I hope you see this. I’m sorry it took so long to reply. I don’t keep up with my TH-cam channel well at all. If there is anything I can do to help please contact me at thetreeconsultancy123@gmail.com
Guys have been trimming for power lines for yrs! I trimmed a tree and ended up in the same area 5 yrs later and had to trim the same tree. all the new growth "SUCKERS" towards
where are you located? And do you have both pole spurs and tree spurs? I'm debating on which ones I should get for my area. I've had people tell me I should get pole spurs since we have more hardwoods here. Any advice?
bad idea to have your climbing system that far away from you? what if you suddenly need to get to the ground? seems like you can barely reach the prussik.
Good Vid, Im a newbie. Just wondering I have Buchingham spikes. No matter how tight or height adjustment, I just cant keep them tight on my boot. My weight always puts the top stem pushing back of my leg. Any suggestions ?
ouch!!! Get some Weaver super climber pads...you'll thank me later. The use two upper straps. Or if you want to spend a little more get a velcro stiff wrap upper pads and velcro lower pads. Then you can dial them in real nice. Those T pads are torture devices.
Lol heavy top will wipe a spar. You bet I'm going to be spiked in. And either double wrap my lanyard. Or use a strap like you did. I have seen climbers whip around a spar 2 or 3 times even with spikes on.
He makes this look WAYYYYYY easier than it is...this dude rules!

Thanks for sharing Joseph.
Thanks for your time, great vid.
Best spur tutorial on the tube! Thanks man. I'm gonna watch this another 100 times
This is so informative... a lot of information that we were´nt even given during education. Thank´s a lot man!

spot on. nice and to the point, subscribed
Well put my friend! Thank you for the message. Such vital information.

Greetings from Slovakia! Great job, great video!
Great teaching. Thankyou.
A lot of good information thank you for posting such an informational video
Great video, I just started climbing this week
YOUR EXPERIENCE SHOWS MR BIG BIG RESPECT BRO ✌️❤️🇬🇧 B SAFE
Would like to see more about beginning climbing with spikes , basic like angle ,distance ,position etc.
Thx

Best video I've seen

Well done great tutorial for the less experienced.

Really good information. Thanks for taking the time.
Can you cover spike sharpening?
Thank you for the video sir! I learned a bunch!
Great to see everyones comments.on wanting to do it better
Great Video. Awesome Demonstration thank you....

Are you use tree spikes or pole spikes? Thanks
Excellent video
Good job, like the old timers told us, the spikes let us walk to work to do are job.
great video really like the content Joe
Thanks, great info.
I really wish you'd start creating content again.
Where those spurs sell, thanks for your answer
Thank You Joseph.
Whats your tip with using a flipline in a fattttt. Like 20 inch at the top bull pine
thanks for the very usefull video. i got a practical question about the resin or tar on the rope. i still find myself in very unpleasant situations during the jobs that my climbing device is jamming when i need it the most. i have been climibng single rope with a isc d4 and a handascender combined with a pulley and have been climbing with a spiderjack 3. both of the belay devices will get stuck and you are not or are hardly able to come back to the ground. have you ever expeianced this? and do you have some tips? i have tried a pruissk which works oke but also gets annoying afther a while because of the resin. like to hear from you.

what's the newest latest greatest spikes out there you like?
I'm brand new to tree climbing and was wondering why you shouldn't use spikes for climbing? Thank you
Which tips are best for long or short spurs

Joseph, do you use tree gaffs or pole gaffs?
You are very smart . once single made in chainese rope are cut (because others are hard to afford it) 2nd line will help !
great Video man!
Great job
Very informative....thanks.

Running bowling and a hitch on the tail

I'm 7 years late to the party but your boss sounds like a prick.
👍thanks 😊
I do spur use on man-fixed poles. Not on forestry growth.
good job bro
Great info, thanks!

good talk
Hola Joseph como estas, muy bueno tus enseñanzas, hago trepa de árboles y poda de altura aca en Argentina, Buenos Aires,
Te mando un saludo

Robert Welch Only difference btwn the two is length of spike, as long as the bark is thin like a shag bark maybe pole hooks, stick to tree spikes.
Robert Welch get both if you can afford it.. it's nice to have options when working with different trees
Thank you for the video!!!!!
bad idea to have your climbing system that far away from you? what if you suddenly need to get to the ground? seems like you can barely reach the prussik.
Good video
Can you climb with spurs with a Prosthetic leg?
I suppose it would partly depend on the type of prosthetic.
Good Vid, Im a newbie. Just wondering I have Buchingham spikes. No matter how tight or height adjustment, I just cant keep them tight on my boot. My weight always puts the top stem pushing back of my leg. Any suggestions ?
Do you have climbing boots with the deep heel to hold the gaff?
Yea they hold the bottom in place. Ive used them more since. Im wondering if maybe i need a different style top pad.
What style upper pads do you have?
Just the plain t pads that generally come with them, Buckinghm
ouch!!! Get some Weaver super climber pads...you'll thank me later. The use two upper straps. Or if you want to spend a little more get a velcro stiff wrap upper pads and velcro lower pads. Then you can dial them in real nice. Those T pads are torture devices.
excellent vid, imo.
Good shit bro !
Steel or aluminum spikes for you?
Started on steel in 2000. Switched to Aluminum in 2003, and never looked back.
But thank you very much for sharing this video and telling me trust trust trust my gear
You changed your channel name. I was worried you deleted your videos!
Lol heavy top will wipe a spar. You bet I'm going to be spiked in. And either double wrap my lanyard. Or use a strap like you did. I have seen climbers whip around a spar 2 or 3 times even with spikes on.
Where is Joseph Hicks????
Can anyone identify the system hes using to keep his climb line tended ahead of him
ALeadFarmerMF I believe I am using a spider jack in this video. Forgive me, it’s been over five years since this video.
ALeadFarmerMF I have a prusick with spliced ends between the harness and the ascender for assent. The prusick is removed once at working position.
joseph high, thank you. By far the best spiking video on TH-cam. I hope to see more content in the future.
This guy don’t give out bullshit he’s safety first
Spikes look very useful for climbing, but the downside is that they damage trees and you could injure yourself if you’re not careful!
I learned to climb spikeless first, big mistake on my end. If you can't flip a line, you ain't gonna nail a job. At least in my area.
Well explained make new videos
💯💯💯💯💯❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏✊✊✊✊✊✊
Removals spikeless ?, that's brainless ! ...
False spiking a tree you are pruning does not injure the tree
