All I can say is many of the artists today own so much to these gents, they did not get the respect that they deserve. Motown owns them Big time, these guys made Motown.
It’s only in the last few years when many started hearing about the Motown house band and many of the hits that Funk Brothers were part of. The Funk Brothers was the backbone of Motown.
The movie: Standing in the Shadows of Motown was a documentary on the house band story. This is the music that has lasted and withstood the test of time.
The Greatest Hit Machine the World Has Ever Seen!!!

I love the "Four Tops" version of this song. But I think it's a completely different interpretation of the original, written and performed by the "Left Banke". I think they're both great.

@BAMfFromLA - For your information. You posted "The Left Banke did a nice cover" Wrong!! The Four Tops did a nice cover. The Left Banke wrote and recorded the first and original version of "Walk Away Renée" in 1966The Four Tops cover version was done in1968.

This the "professional" version. I love the Four Tops, god knows, but they didn't capture the forlorn quality of the original. It's almost like a singalong. Not lonely enough for me.

The Left Banke wrote it, and it is definitely a beautiful song.
Then the Four Tops performed it.
    Between the Motown production values,
and the four mature male voices,
the Tops made this one of the best recordings of 1968.

The Left Banke wrote and recorded the song in pop baroque style. They were very young, and the lead singer sounded a bit rough around the edges, but brought out the forlorn heartbreak of the lyrics.
