Hey! I have been working and workning and working on a musical that tells the story of Judas Iscairoit from the bible. but Ive had LOTS of problems.
    1. Judas and his life isn't heavily documented in the bible which is my only source.
    2. There is a existing play about Judas and now I feel unoriginal
    3. I write songs but then I write the accompaniment and change the song and confuse my self
I also feel like its to short, only having 15 songs and 78 pages.
I don't know if I should start over, keep messing with it, or give up and I'm frustrated
Do you have any advice? I'm kinda begging.

Thanks for being honest about all of this - it's a tough place to be in when you feel so stuck. I hear you!
I'll try to answer each point specifically:
      1. If you were trying to write a true biography, the small amount of information about his life would indeed be an issue. But since this is a musical, you have license to essentially make it up and fill out all the parts of his life that would fit the story you'd like to tell!
      2. It is actually super common for multiple musicals to exist that come from the same source material (Wizard of Oz/The Wiz/Wicked, Phantom/The Phantom of the Opera, two musicals called The Wild Party, etc.). You're in good company!
      3. Perhaps beginning with a song structure, so both your melody/lyrics and accompaniment will be close automatically. Or, if you find the accompaniment more difficult to write, start there and add words and melody on top! There's also nothing wrong with changing a song once you've begun writing it.
There are absolutely ways forward if you want to keep telling this story. You've got this!

I'm working on my very first original musical and I feel like my dialogue scenes are too short. Any advice? P.S. your content is super helpful! Thank you for what you do!

Welcome and thanks for the question (and your kind words)! In musicals, dialogue scenes often are on the shorter side, but my question would be: What work is the dialogue scene doing? And are we as audience members getting everything we need? Character, development, plot, rising tension or levity, etc.? This is usually a good starting place!
I also released this video recently, which may help!

@@musicaltheatrewriterguyHey, this was really helpful! I tend to also get lost when writing dialogue scenes because I can’t figure out what else needs to go there. What is it with you and being able to explain things so well? I just discovered your channel and I feel like I struck gold!
