  • In this rather long video we look at in-depth servicing of four Wrenn motor types.
This includes replacement ball bearings and bearing adjustment.
    Re-magnetizing of the motor magnets.
    Fault finding and more.
Towards the end there is a nice running session so you can see and hear how the locomotives run now.
I had a lot of help putting all these tips together! Check out www.rmweb.co.uk...
Also thanks goes to my TH-cam contributors for their ideas.
I hope you find this helpful, I don’t profess to be an expert, but I love my Wrenn engines and have tried to do the best for them.
1/16th ball bearings can be had from simplybearings....

That`s good news about your 2-6-4. I would never have dreamed of suggesting to check the bearings. Excellent video.

+sewingman1 Many thanks! I was surprised as well. She was a late purchase from Wrenn just about the time they announced they were closing down.

Excellent vidéo. I’m a BIG fan of these Wrenn and Hornby Dublo locos. I found several cheap 3-rail non runners on eBay this summer and have been progressively restoring them all to working order. Beautifully engineered, they really are bomb proof, and once restored they do run beautifully.
Unfortunately I can’t afford a Ronald Dodd remag machine, but I’ve had some success with 7mm Neodymium cube magnets. I must find myself an ammeter. I use H&M Duette , Clipper and Walkabout controllers which are great for these. I’d better check out the ball bearings. Thanks for the dimensions of these, it’ll make them easier to find.
I see you’ve blackened the wheel rims on the R1, it’s an excellent cheat too on the Duchess and City class locos with their under scale wheels as it absolutely transforms the look of them.
    Subscribed !
    All the best, Robin

Nice one Mike, I recently striped down a mint Wrenn 'City of Glasgow' my son had from new, never been apart, and yes, only one ball bearing fitted! so something worth looking out for.

Great video Mike, I like your servicing videos of different locos, if possible at some time could you do a video on Hornby ringfield motors. Regards John.

+Wilso 1947 Hi John, glad they help and thanks for watching. I do have a few Hornby ringfield fitted locos coming into the depot soon :) But in the meantime you may find my Lima service guides helpful, they are very similar. The main difference being there is no need to inspect and clear the gears of moulding spurs on the Hornby.

Hi, This is the main video for that, You don't live near Chichester do you? I could take a look. Can you describe what happened exactly and what controller was in use etc?

I found your video very helpful. I don't have a magnetiser on me. I see you have a 4-6-2 Dorchester West Country Class which I also have myself and needs a bit of TLC. I was wondering if you can do a video on servicing and maintenance of the locomotive please

Hi Mike, great and informative video! I've recently bought some Wrenn locos, and I've managed to service them all, and they run great!
A quick question though, is there a way to get the armature out of the vertically mounted motor, as in the 2-6-4 or the A4s? I've managed to service them, but obviously can't check the bearing at the bottom with the armature still in place.
    Cheers mate,
    Sam :)

+Sam'sTrains Hi Sam, very many thanks. Yes you can get the armature out, you need to fully remove the top bearing screw, and brushes. Once this is down you will be able to lift clear of the bottom bearing and remove. Be careful as this is when you can lose the tiny ball bearings!
