I lost two good friends here, they died coming in, at night , the trawler was hit from behind by a wave, it sank , their bodies were never recovered, Gavin farley and Robert Alexander, rip,
Wise move I think. When I was young, I would watch boats and trawlers going in and out on some very heavy swells. That was before they dredged the bar. I don't know if is better or worse. It seemed like it was easier to read back then.
@@Notinserviceijthe other thing is the fish n chips up here are no good! (At least 30 minutes away where I live - if any Lakes Entrance residents have recommendations I’m all ears!)
He actually did a very good job of reading the waves, and finding deeper spots where the waves weren't breaking. Going out an inlet like this can frequently be easier than coming in. When your going out, you can see where the waves aren't breaking. But coming back is, looking at the backs of the waves, it's not as obvious, and you really need to be careful.
Sorry but he didn’t read anything the fact he had a break was pure luck. At lakes or any opening you sit in the channel and count the sets, at lakes you can do from 20 metres in the safety of the channel. The fact he went out and looked for a safe chance to turn almost straight away proved he never did and just took a punt. Lakes had killed many a man and just before Xmas it tipped over a trawler and that boat skipper has got experience.
@@rogerkoch8170 exactly what I thought too. plus he was heading out in outgoing tide which is always iffy. like you said sit back and watch the sets. I drive a haines 445 and been out of narooma. experience and local knowledge is very important.
fished out of there for yrs 1 big mistake going out in a run out tide definate no no , weve been sideways in a60ft scallop boat its not a bar to be messed with , ive also seen boats go over there , lives lost ,
if he even bothered to look from any of the many vantage points he would never have attempted that.any one with half a brain could see that it was a bad day,
This makes me angry, I have a 22 ft and a 32 ft and go through that entrance all the time. The rule is if you see white caps you don’t go out and even then beware of large swells. This moron not only risks his life but those that have to save them. Should have his license canceled.

Trawlers can not run in faster than the swell
If in doubt, turn about.
Well done skpipper. You live to cross another day.

A very wise decision indeed. Now put the boat on the trailer and go to the chip shop and get yourself some flake and chips for $10.
You ain't wrong, but not everyone goes fishing for a feed.
@@dogmachine2406 good point
Bloody hell what dodgy fish n chip store you going to
I piece of old flake is like 10bucks minimum let alone 5 bucks for chips 😮

Lots of Brim further up the lakes.

That boat got real small real quick !
Looks like a run out tide too, the worst kind to be crossing a bar.
You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em.
It was always a good day to just fish for Bream and Flatties in the lake.
Good call
No guts no glory.
Good to see you enjoying the swell

Hmmmm……why even the attempt?
Smart move. Well done skip
Thanks for sharing thrilling experience 👌👌👌
Time for a 10 meter power cat
Lived to fish another day.
I saw dolphins there yesterday
NEVER EVER ABORT. EIther commit to it, or dont do it. BUT NEVER ABORT. Thats how you get rolled.😮
He chose the best option here though, the sets that came in after he turned his boat around would have swamped him easily.
And that's how to make a perfect retreat to fish another day!
Coming back to change their underwear
I saw seals there yesterday. They were surfing the waves. I think this bloke would be fucged if he got swamped.
sometimes discretion is the better part of valor, including on the water.
Pretty wild ...
Eddie would go.
Eddie would, geez going back to the 90s there
Eddie did go. He went to get help on his surfboard and was never seen again.......
Do people not check the surf report before going out? Could have easily ended bad for him, he should have turned around well before he did.
Too big a seas for a small boat like that !
It was an obvious danger, very obvious.???
Too dangerous not worth loosing your life over trying to prove what you got away with ,to hell with showing off its BULL SHIT
I would turn and go back

Isn't the advice that once you head out you need to keep going rather than turn back with the waves breaking around you?
They picked the right time to turn around. Bit of a lull
Prob a good decision y not trim up getting the bow up ? Still made the right call no fish is worth your life

You should call the cops or something Roger 🤣
@@shannonbryant2857 how often have you gone out through that entrance
Been through that entrance heaps of times and Roger is right. Has ended in tragedy for far too many. Respect it or it will bite you big time.
