- Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has looked to New Zealand for inspiration on his latest policy, by planning to ban selling cigarettes to anyone born on or after January 2009. His aim is to create a completely smoke-free generation - but is it OK for the government to control our vices? Brenda thinks there are more pressing issues for Rishi to be worrying about right now, and Linda’s convinced it’ll just force more kids (and then adults!) to wait outside a shop asking people to buy them a packet or two!

I totally agree with the ban. Whilst it will create a black market, for the majority it will be beneficial.
Beneficial to who? Like yo7 said, it will create a black market so it will become more dangerous than it is now. The ban isn’t going to work.
@@CravingSolitude That may well be true. But most young people are better educated these days about smoking and its effects, and there are fewer young smokers in our society than there were in the past.
@@lewiswise7808exactly! People don't need farming !
@@lewiswise7808 yes but that was their choice. It wasn't forced on them.
When I use to work in a shop me and my colleagues were not aloud to sell vapes/cigarettes to anyone who was born after 2004 -2024 etc and anyone under 2003 and under are over 18 but kids just get over people/mates to get them for them or even there parents to do it.
And when I served 1 woman I noticed her daughter was standing next to her and I still made sure the girl was older than 18.
Kids especially just thinks it's cool when you see 1 person do it that's why they do it to fit in with the crew
This is a DEMOCRACY FREEDOM OF CHOICE, not a DICTATORSHIP!
It wont work, as people and kids will just buy vapes online...same as the war on Drugs it will make no difference at all
Prohibition never works, period, look at the 1920's in America, or prohibitive modern drug laws. You will never ban anything, only make it go under ground and become more dangerous. People know the effects of smoking and it is their prerogative to do so. I pay my taxes, plus the tax I paid on tobacco when I smoked, so if I need treatment, I have more than paid into the system, leave people get on with the few luxuries they have.
My granddaughter banged on at her mother to stop smoking and used to cry and was scared her mum would get cancer!.She went on about this up until she was 14,at that time she started smoking and smokes more then her mum,up to 40 cigarettes a day and she is 19 years old.Oh and while she was pregnant, she smoked, vaped and wore nicotine patches!.I am ashamed of her for this and many other reasons I won’t go into!
Yes, he is. In my opinion, anything related to addiction which includes alcohol, drugs, smoking and VAPING should be either banned in the uk or made illegal completely this includes for adults
Some sense. Where do all you guys live? I have moved 7 times around Glasgow and cannot find a single flat where all the neighbours don't smoke. The data that says 21% of ppl in Scotland smoke is a fallacy... 80% of grown ups smoke
This country has problems with Rules!...definitely the Government need to tackle these kind of issues...banning taping, smoking. Underage drinking etc...is just the beginning...They also need to address the Manufacturer s, suppliers, drug dealers...stop the supply and production...then its not easily available
I cannot agree more. I have never ever seen such disobedience. Such nastiness and such disrespect.
We in this country still have so many freedom's...We are very Lucky...imagine living in a country where your not even allowed to have access to the Internet! ..
I agree with Kelle. The education works. You can wean a generation off of a product. Whilst not creating even more criminality through prohibition.
She talks about her kids saying they are grown up and think its disgusting. That's no guarantee they won't vape or smoke..she is living in a dream
The sugar tax and smoking ban are to benefit the health of what is an obese nation. Using the idea of a nanny state are a rebuttal is ridiculous. I guarantee if any of their kids or family members died of Lung cancer from smoking or Heart problems from bad diet then they would change their tune.
Maybe tackle the horrendous levels of knive crime
Smoking kills far more than knife crime - a little education goes a long way. 😊
@@lf67hh28 smoking is a choice, being stabbed isn't
@samuelstevens248 Haven't seen the statistics on passive smoking, then? Now, we have passive vaping also. Both are extremely bad for everyone's health, and not a choice.
Totally agree with you so much other things important to be dealing with.
@@pbrown6769 Smoking kills 80,000 per year. Knife crime is in the hundreds.
It works in Singapore
Aren’t drugs banned in the UK? What’s the difference ?😂
Technically not, as alcohol and medication etc.. is ‘drugs’
I just think that the government now needs to focus on other things as well and do something more.
It costs the nhs £4 billion but raises £10 billion. Where are they going to find the money.
It's many steps too far, people buy illicit drugs, so where will taxes come from
The woman that said she see the benefits of vapes its crazy. Vanessa are more likely to be even more dangerous than normal cigarettes just they are so new on the market there is not yet statistics on the side effects of vaping.
Get lost
Exactly. What a deluded comment I thought - there's NO benefits to vaping in my opinion and the statistics prove that
The education has worked I’m 26 it worked to an extent on my generation, even more so on kellies kids generation. The conversation seems almost a decade or two late. It’s will just increase an unregulated black market. Completely agree with Ruth, this wouldn’t be high on my list of priorities if I were PM right now
When you have a kingdom...you have a king, when you have an empire...you have an emperor. we have a country!
So you should have a counterer.. following that pattern. 😂😂😂😂😂
The issue is there advertising vapes as something that is trendy with all the different colours and flavours, they need to get rid of the flavours and rainbow colours
That I agree with blueberry cherry cranberry all them fruit ones are okay for adults but gummy bear pink lemonade just what it’s so to kids they just don’t care retailers want the money:
When are they banning alcohol? When are they plastering pictures on alcohol bottles? etc etc etc
Alcohol doesn't cause lung cancer.
@@lf67hh28it causes liver failure
@@gemdee573 Only in severe cases of alcoholism. Smoking kills everyone 🙂
@@lf67hh28 so does alcohol
More people die from being an alcoholic then smoking.
You cannot deny health care to smokers (by making them pay for their treatment). What a horrible road to go down. Where do you draw the line?
All my friends and family in my generation (Boomers) have given up smoking YEARS ago, Sunak is preaching to the converted. Just go to your GP and get the patches free. I think vaping hasn't been around long enough for the drawbacks to show up yet.
Yes but vaping is too glamourised these days....too attractive to the younger generation...who will in future will be a burden on the NHS...I fully agree smoking is just ine issue...we have an obesity epidemic, knife epidemic, yes some of these are personal choices..but then if there's no rules or laws in place then it will get worse and more difficult to handle...Best to nip it in the bud ASAP
Agree with the ban, what's wrong with young kids never being able to buy cigarettes. It's a forward thinking policy
Hi, Im writing from the year 2050. No we still haven’t won a World Cup/Euros and spend my mornings hanging round outside the newsagents with handful of twenties asking anyone who looks over 60 if they can please buy me some Lambert and Butlers. 😢😢
Banning smoking is good, although controlling. As long as education for kids is included why it is banned i.e. bad for your health, bad for people around you both family and the public (midwives tell pregnant women to stay away from people who smoke!), better for the environment, hopefully less cigarette butts thrown on the streets. Teach kids to take ownership in looking after their own city.
If you want society's health to improve, NHS to have less burden, this is one step forward.
Definitely is. It’s so dangerous
So is alcohol
@@philipjohnkaye8890 absolutely! The effects of both on the NHS is what matters. I’m not sure which is worse.
Back in the 70’s at college we were taught that the tax from cigarettes paid for education in this country. Will have to find alternative sources for funding 😏
Yes good on him ❤😂🎉😢😮😅
Make everything legal you’d get rid of all black market drugs the government are dull
We all have the right to choose, my choice not anyone else. You all forget those who smoke pay a lot of taxes were will the goverment get that money from
Uhm, he is targeting manufacturers, those who make vapes targeted at children, certain flavours. He has also banned outright disposable vapes, cant buy or sell them.
These women only read the headlines, no wonder this video title is also wrong.
Another intelligent being... I'm aghast at some things people say. You should hear the old women on the streets of Glasgow when they are asked about why they are supporting Hamas😂... old, white and bored. Let's go and support something... even if we have no clue what it's about.
Kids will still manage to get them
DO PEOPLE FORGET HOW MUCH MONEY GOES TO NHS THROUGH CIGGARETTE TAX ????
Not as much as the health effects of smoking cost the NHS.
It does not matter ... the problem I see is that 70% of all NHS staff smoke or vape.
This is not new.
Support sunak 100% before starmer. Labour have no answers on immigration, the economy and in defence. Britain would be under far more danger under a woke labour party. Why folk think starner and rayner are the answer I don't know
Just thought i'd pop by to say this show and it's panel have nowhere near enough credibility to be talking about any topic with any kind of certaintity. Why watch it?? One of them referenced 'walking past a chicken shop'. Really???? Those are the kind of insights that we think are worth listening to on important topics????
My view good decision Sunak
🙏🇯🇲✌🏽
Everyone view it as a bad medicine but it can cure also. ✌🏽🙏🇯🇲
Rishi should look up what happened when the US tried to ban alcohol. You have to stay with the tone of the country or no one will take you seriously.
Not a single coherent argument came out of this discussion...blabbering nonsense....
Depends on the person health condition Marijuana helps cancer patients studies proven
Worldwide. 🇯🇲🙏✌🏽
I think he needs to concern himself with things that are more pressing and that need time vapes are just another thing for them to seem like they are doing something to help the country it’s to do with they can’t tax them like they want to simple sunak is a liar like all the rest end of!!
im a vaper i dont aprove of disposables but isnt that better than kids smoking, the govt did say vaping is 95% safer this will lead to kids smoking
Cigarettes causes bad breathe , Lung cancer, asthma attacks , discolouration teeth , wheezing
To much alcohol causes just as many problems, same as stuffing your face to much!
So best ban fast food, sugar, and alcohol while their at it!!
Let people live their lives how they choose!
ROFL .. love the fancy dress .. Bring back Dynasty .. zoot suit ... what a laughing stock

WHO policies
Silly old women.
You lot need to follow his diet.😅
They should ban her off 📺 tv.
Why? She’s great, have you met her? Probably no.
For once and the only time but I agree with Liz Truss. *shivers*
i'll smoke if i want to n fyi new zealand went back on that ban
