- Britain is on course to ban smoking for an entire generation after MPs voted in favour of Rishi Sunak's plan, despite facing some rebellion and backlash. The legislation, if passed, will mean that anyone aged 15 or younger today will never be able to buy cigarettes legally. Andrew Pierce and Kevin Maguire join GMB to discuss what the impact of this ban would be should it go through.

What is absolutely hilarious about the UK trying to ban smoking is that in the USA since 2021 we are moving to INCREASE smoking by making marijuana legal. As of 2024 marijuana or cannabis is now a $40 Billion industry with 15,000 legal dispensaries and it is expected to grow to $115 Billion by 2030. The number of adults who smoke has risen from 7% in 2013 to 13% in 2024, and is expected to gradually increase to about 20% of the population by 2035. So, what is the UK going to do when to get a trade deal with the USA, there might be a demand to legalize cannabis in your country?

It’s not the banning. It’s the enforcement.

Never mind banning smoking, they should be banning something much more important for Britain, illegal immigrants and criminality.
Illegal immigrants and criminality is banned. Hence why it's "illegal" and "criminal"...
And Germany just legalised cannabis 🙄
Cannabis doesn’t have to be consumed by smoking it though. I am prescribed cannabis for ptsd and autism and consume it safely by dry herb vape or ingestion. 💚

It will never work
Well. It’ll be Law, so, it’s not a case of ‘it working’ or not.
Its another control mechanism, people should have the right to think for themselves. George Orwell springs to mind.
Let's hope this panel don't mind paying more tax after the loss of tax on cigarettes.......
So how would a police officer enforce the law for a future 25 years old in 10 years from now? How will they distinguish between a 25 and a 24? :)
The police cannot catch murderers let alone smokers. Ban alcohol but he won't because fishi likes alcohol
Did they not try this in New Zealand and have to reverse it due to the loss of tax .
there won't be a loss in tax

@@gellideggti While the tobacco industry argue that what smokers pay in tax compensates for the cost to society, the excise tax paid for 2020/21 totalled just under £10bn [5] in England, higher than in previous years but still nowhere near the £17.04bn it cost society in 2019.

In reasonable moderation, those have little to zero affect on one's health. Smoking is destructive & damaging every time.

You don't want alcohol banned because YOU enjoy it. It's a factor in 38% of all violent crime.
How about a limit on how much alcohol you can buy and consume in a week. If it's all about health, surely you're in favour of that? 🤔
This cost of living is stressing people out and you're going to ban cigs. Good luck 👍. No 1 is giving up spliffs or my cig break at work.

Conservatives and Labour have completely lost the plot thinking this is the biggest issue people are worried about. Complete distraction tactic

how can someone born before the new year 2009 be able to buy them and someone that born the 1st Jan 2009 be banned for full life madness
I think people should have the choice. I do not smoke, but I am glad I had the choice to have one or two on a night out when I wanted one. If you are an adult it should be your choice.
Why do we tolerate drugs and alcohol which causes more widespread damage
That’s what they’re focusing on 😂

Why was I able to buy single cigarettes for 5p each on my way to school, in fact it was the shop closest to the school. I’m 56 now with COPD. I’m hopeful for the younger generations
They will still smoke and experiment and it will change nothing at all.

There taking away our freedom's our little luxury it is terrible but I'm a 30 year smoker and though I wish I did smoke I will not let them take away my freedom to smoke.
Your freedom to smoke isn't being taken away - do you not understand the bill?

PRIORITIES
I know I sound like an hypocrite but I smoked for years and was in denial about the damage it does. I finally stopped 7 months ago after multiple attempts. Id say to young people never start in the first place.
I’m the same I’ve quit a 40 a day habit 🫣 I’ve got four children and I hope they never smoke. My 17 year old shows no interest in cigs but everyone should have freedom of choice. If someone wants to do something they’ll do it. Just my opinion 😊
Yes, you are a hypocrite so you have no right.
I have the right to say it and people have the right to disagree. 👍
True, but it is something no law will stop. Children have experimented sìnce time began and will not stop.
So basically its bad to smoke tobacco but if its made in a factory its okay...

no such thing as conviction politics anymore, or no conviction politicains that are in favour of liberty and individualism
I've actually been thinking this myself, several times, that if smoking is made illegal for kids already below the age where they are not allowed to smoke, then why not this harmful and deadly substance become a thing of the past? Unless some teenager are already addicted to smoking, there should be alternatives, but for example to start in 2025 with making it illegal for anyone born after 2015? But then the taxes imposed on tobacco products should also be used to make available alternative nicotine products for those that in some way or another, because of smuggling and illegal cigarettes, still gain this addiction, just like other addicts get help in some form. It is a harmful addiction, just as bad as many drugs and worse then some things that are illegal.
These people are here to feed you the conversation so you don't even think for yourself. Taking people's freedoms away does not stop people smoking, they will just get the cigarettes illegally, just like all the other drugs. But with it being illegal, you won't just get offered cigarettes and alcohol, it's unregulated and for teenagers, it becomes a larger act of rebellion
so carry a knife in London but you cant carry a packed of cigs
What is this pretentious so called country coming to
I think the GOVERNMENT needs to get off they're high horses, seriously, you work for the people, your a government suppose to be here for the peoples, not in GOVERNMENT to start dictating to people how they should live they're lives, which is not politics. .
who are these clowns.
the genocide already happened
I'm glad I don't live over there. Governments are becoming too controlling everywhere.
Right because banning alcohol has worked wonders when any country tried banning something. This will create a wonderful black market for which they can later say ‘we need more police to combat crime’ and then you’ll have a police state same as the US and by the time the ban will end it’ll be a totally different world.
Let's talk about legalising cannabis but ban smoking that's the most backwards thing i have heard in my 40yrs alive
Very good 👍🏼
Three quarters of adults in England and Scotland (75%) support their government’s smokefree ambition, and 69% of adults in Wales, with similar results for those voting in the last general election for all the political parties represented in Westminster.
Why isn't Boris Johnson in prison? Where is 350mln for NHS?

Good ban smoking, it’s disgusting and stinks.
I am not giving my spliffs up for anyone
Well said
The age limit should be raised from 18 to 30 and a weekly limit to about 50 cigarettes or a couple of cigars. Creating a tobacco consumer account with an ID card that must be presented anywhere in shops when buying tobacco would be a reasonable approach. People are less likely to start smoking after the age of 30. Freedom to smoke should never be taken away.
Lunatic
no they should just keep their nose out ...
Not one person to argue the other side. Nanny State troopers.
The fun police strike again 😂
Sunak's "Stop the Smokers" pledge is worse than his "Stop the Boats" BS.
Sunak, you need to deal with more pressing issues like cost of living, rising food prices etc. Get your priorities in order.
Why not just change the VAT on cigarettes to 40, 50 even 60%? Make them hugely expensive. Treasury make more money and it will incentivise some to quit. Only offer prescription vapes to those wanting to quit vs selling them in shops like we do now.
Yes, vaping as well
Cool, can't wait until they do the same thing with alcohol.
Oh, wait...
That's not freedom of choice
Is NHS kosher
So kids are ending up in hospital because of vapes and instead of banning vapes you're banning cigarettes...make it make sense?
Smoking is like doing drugs, people against smoking bans have lost their moral compass
It's a personal choice also for drugs, stop this nannying!
When the Americans banned alcohol everyone bought it illegally from criminals. Guess who will benefit most from Rishi's smoking ban?
I'm just here to thank the government for setting up a black market for me, good work all..,
They will create a black market for tobacco. Sensible smokers will start growing their own. Parliament will ban tobacco before everyone is too old to buy it.
Ed says why fill your lungs whe you don’t know what the long term effects are goibg to be. Remember that the next time someone is attacked for not having a covid jab or something similar
This won’t work, it’ll just create more of a black market. I was able to buy cigarettes as a 14 yr old. It might not have been legal, but was so easy to do if you knew where to go.
Can we outlaw the animal abuse and slaughter industries: meat, leather, fur, dairy, eggs, medical research etc?
Right, OK then, ban alcohol too, just as bad............
Every where great Britain
they just passed a bill that results in different legal adults having different rights and freedoms. yeah smoking is bad, but this is far worse. sure people born in 2009 are 14 years old now, but in 20 years they'll be 34, and have limited freedoms and liberties compared to somebody who is 35. how is this justifiable on any level?
