If you are comparing the standard range to the max pack and saying the standard is better because it charges from 10 to 80 in 30 min and the max pack charges 10 to 80 in 40 min then lets dive into that because 10 to 80 in a standard pack is 189 miles added and 10 to 80 in a max pack is 294 miles added, so you are getting over 100 more miles in 10 more min. So if you are saying 10 more min is too long then unplug at 30 min and you will have added more than the 189 miles that you would have added in the standard pack. Seems like a no brainer to me. If you really want to compare the two you would charge the standard pack from 10 to 80 and you would charge the max pack from 10 to 55 and see which is faster.
Good coverage, thank you Francie. One glaring omission from R1 2.0 that surprised me that no one mentioned was not switching to 800volt platform. Everything we read or view regarding 800volt all claim to lower cost, reduce wiring, and increase efficiency as well as reduce charging times. With so many EVs introduced since 2023 that already have 800volt, I was kind of shocked that Rivian did not.
It’s always funny when Tom gets all excited 😂😂
Ha
Agree with their complicated line up. I check their website I don’t understand their options and pricing. Tesla is very simple and easy to understand.
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste

I have a Rivian R1S, and I don't know what Tom is talking about. The road performance and ride quality on my vehicle (Generation #1) is fine. As to the proliferation of options, maybe there's a brand identity and customer intimacy element here. Seems like this might be designed/engineered to contrast to others in the BEV space, who are trying to simplify rather than diversify (so to say).
Same actually. I've taken my R1S all over and this is coming from an ICE Subaru and the R1S is far better on long drives and the highway in my opinion. I just think he is looking for this stuff where as I'm more of a car amateur and to me the ride in the R1S is amazing. I'd rate it A++ and thats valid because I'm the one driving it in the end :D
@@JoeSimonsen Yes.
Obviously has much more room for improvement. The ride in my X is better.
I have a R1S gen 1 and have a gen 2 on the way. So I’ll be able to feel the difference of the 3
I have an R1S and the ride and wind noise are terrible. They've improved the ride a lot since I got it, but it still sucks.
You folks are spot on. Besides the low prices, people like in n out burger and Costco because there are fewer choices. Tesla got this right. It reduces their costs and makes the customers decision much easier. Choices should be limited to a standard, dual performance max pack, and quad max. Rivian is not large enough for so many options. It’s a shame they don’t know this.
Love Francie and her presentations. Bright future in the PR or similar fields.
Francie, a great video!
I hope Rivian allows CCS R1’s to upgrade to NAC port in the future
This won’t happen, ever.
Tom's internet connection is being distorted by all his wall chargers in the background LOL
Where is the Tow hitch? I don't see it in standard features nor in available options.
Dual motor with 3 different-size batteries would have been fine with the R1S. Nobody needs 0-60 in 3 seconds, but we certainly would appreciate a true 400+ mile range with quick-er charging.
Most of those buying these expensive vehicles have home charging so 98% of the time there is no need for such focus on supercharging. And you nerds as you call yourselves put too much emphasis in the overall owner experience on charging curves, estimated miles, etc. given that huge fact. I know you say it once in a while but at the same time talk about charging for 30 or more minutes. Yes, important if you tow a lot, go off grid, or truly do a lot of road trips but that is such a small amount of the owners of these vehicles. Love all your channels and I am also that kind of person who is intrigued by all the numbers and which vehicle has more distance capability or charges faster but at the end of the day I own my R1T and am the 98-99% camp and I have to try to not get too negative on what I have versus what Gen 2 will be able to deliver. Happy with the new software upgrade I will at least be getting a good amount of it initially.
Rivian just made the best EV pickup even better R1T love it they need to bring it to Europe ❤❤❤❤.
Great podcast great guests keep it up 😊❤❤
Tom is right we are old that buy these cars and don't care about going off the road. Just need a car to provide comfort on long trips. 🤣
I love my R1T. Had a chance to upgrade to a r1s, but decided to stick w the R1T bc of the smoother ride and meridian sound system.
I wish rivian could fix the wind noise in my R1T. It’s pretty bad but i forgot how bad it was until I recently had an Audi A4 loaner and realize how quiet it was on the hwy. I hope they fixed it w the gen 2.
Great video. Electric moonroof tinting? Wow, I don’t think these will ever be in my budget sadly. Still wanting a basic electric vehicle for overlanding in Colorado. May need to see if Toyota makes a PHEV 4runner in the next coming years.
Thanks for tuning in! I know the prices of EVs are still a big pain point for all the cool add ins. Let me know what you end up doing about your next car be it EV or PHEV! :)
I am leasing a dual motor max pack for $925/ month with 15K miles /year! My only problem is the Tesla chargers will not populate for trips- big bummer, any thoughts.
"Let's take the Lightning." Ford knows how to make and deliver cars/trucks. Tesla knows how to make and deliver holistic EV experience, and Rivian?
Any update on the standard battery charging curve. Any plans to test soon? Want to buy one but prefer to see a charging test first.
I wish it was clear which powertrain setup is the best for offroad use. Dual Motor/Performance, Tri or Quad. That is not clear so far. Historically off roaders went for the Quad bc it had the most off road modes and tech for rock crawling. But I dont want to spend 115K for a R1T Quad. Heck the Cybertruck has front and rear locker tech and it will be available for 79K with the dual motor format and off road modes. I want a Rivian but functionally the CT has more for less when it comes to offroading tech. That said the CT is too big and oddly shaped for narrow offroad trails. I would love to get an updated take on R1 v2 models when it comes to the best for CO mountains and Moab travel. Dual, Tri or Quad?
Good point...
I think the wiring changes is a big deal. I don't thinks it wonky. It saves money and saves weight.
The biggest upgrade with this Gen 2 is the efficiency upgrade. These Gen 2's are rated at 3 miles per kilowatt its a huge energy savings. Thats the reason to upgrade in my opinion. I cant consider a Gen 1 now knowing how efficient the Gen 2 now is.
beside the standard base model, everything else is substantially increased in price, especially those Tri- and Quad (don't even mentioned those launch pricing if anyone still have the voucher not sure if they can get the Gen 2 price to match). I guess they don't want to sell that many Tri and Quad, keep them aspiration vehicles as much as they can, and sell R2 when it's ready. Don't need to go Tesla route sell everything cheap including Plaid. The only issue is are they able to get people forget the Gen 1 quad is only 90k with large pack after the 2022 price increase.
Great video love the channel.
There is a cost to the number of options, but there are folks that want a particular thing, but it is not the same particular thing as the next person. I frequently find that the higher trims of cars have things I like along with things I hate. More options would be good for me, bur how many folks are so picky?
I have a feeling the Tri-motor is going to be used for top-spec R2 and R3 variants hence the inclusion in to the R1 now.
I had been thinking along these lines on the motors such as the new quad's dual front will be the R2's rear dual motor. BUT, my real point for "replying" here to your comment was it got me thinking about the software side of things. This will given Rivian time to get their tri-motor software control out in the field and improved upon with the lower R1's production before the R2 starts. They can incorporate field experiences back into the R2 development as "needed" including critical HW items if they come up. Thanks for your comment; appreciate it getting to think more broadly.
On top of that the hardware is also six years old and thus everything from gen 1 can not be upgraded.
New vs old max pack 10 miles, efficiency dramatically overstated. Nobody will see 3kwh especially at hwy speeds. Same battery just more dense. Like 5.1 to 5.7.
Demand is slowing down, and Rivian is not going to cut the price, now the only way to keep the employees and pay the salaries is to add more options on the truck so the complexity can occupy the extra time and slow down the production line. Better than firing workers or cutting the price.
Once the demand picks up, we will see less options for sure.
i am interested in the names... Lexus uses these number/letters, so does Mercedes and Mazda, but Toyota uses names and so does Honda and GM. But then Lamborghini uses names, Ferrari uses letters/numbers. The funny thing is people started to call the F150 'The Lightning' so that the traditional letter/numbers have become a name in the popular lingo. Then there is Tesla, they have 3, S, X, Y, but everyone calls it the "model 3", "model x", etc. nobody says a "Tesla 3". But you can have a Mazda 3. or a Mazda 5. Vinfast doesn't have an 8 though, it has a VF8, which is the initials of VinFast followed by the letter 8. But Tesla does not have the "T3" or the "TS". Of course Vinfast couldnt have a V8 because thats a badge on Toyota Sequoias.
I could never remember the difference between the numbers. BMW 5 or 7. Mercedes 300 vs whatever. Rivian R1T vs R1S, vs R2 D2 , i dont know. I guess i'm more of a name guy.
when i'm spending 80k it should be on me to figure out what car fits me. Should be able to take the time to go through everything. Also I wish Tom still had his restaurant! Don't need the quad.
All these options are just a way to nickel and dime their customers for more money, which is a bad look IMO. If I’m buying a 70-80k EV, then why the hell do I have to pay extra for the tonneau cover, or the color change? I think they should get rid of the standard option and just do the large and max pack and drop the price.
@51:40 - That isn't the real lease price as I'm sure that is only after thousands up front (and probably has some laughable mileage amount).
I don’t understand why not just license what Tesla is doing . They are trying to recreate everything including taking the same steps Tesla took. That’s a mistake. The future is pure vision and them putting LiDAR etc is ridiculous
Did Tom get a prototype? 😂 Nobody else kills the ride quality to that extent.
38:11 This is such marketing BS on the Rivian side. The point is that TOPS wasn't meaningful a year ago because there was no custom software that could properly utilize this type of computing power. Meanwhile AMD has already introduced a chip with 80TOPS this year, Intel will have 100TOPS at Q3 because now that there is a new AI environment in Widows 11 it makes sense to produce such a product.
Rivian screwed Gen 1 owners on the false autonomy promises. I sense a lawsuit in their future.
Rivian configurator confusing?....
Try any European manufacturer, your head will 🤯
I guarantee the extra computing power is mostly GPU acceleration. So only certain tasks will accelerate at those speeds. Still not anything to complain about.
No, AI requires a lot more raw computing to feed the algorithms.
@@tonys9413 GPU's are frequently used for AI acceleration. The more I think about the Rivian though, they are probably using one of Nvidia's compute platforms. So most of the power is in the AI compute anyway.
Kia ev9 for 56k , clearly better choice
Too much complaining. Tesla has over promised a lot.
